With the qualifying phase of the Currie Cup set to kick off next month, the Sharks XV have been working hard behind the scenes, with coaches Paul Anthony and AB Zondagh taking charge.

It’s understood that Michael Horak will assume the head coaching duties once the competition kicks off, but the former England fullback is certainly earning his pay-cheque at the moment, as he’s doubling up his Sharks XV commitments with a stint as UKZN Impi head coach. Horak will bring a fair number of that Impi squad with him to bolster this Sharks XV lineup once the Varsity Shield tournament has run its course.

A warm-up game has been arranged for the squad and they will take on the visiting Griquas team in an enlarged trial-style match, comprising three chukkas of 30 minutes each. This game takes place at 15h00 tomorrow on KP2.

The Sharks have named three mostly-different lineups, an indication that wholesale changes will be made at the start of each chukka. The squad being used is a real mixed bag, with Super Rugby frings players in need of game time mixing it up with the bulk of last year’s under 21 side, along with a few club players thrown in here and there. Thomas du Toit, Tera Mtembu, Dale Chadwick, Khaya Majola, Jean Deysel, Inny Radebe and Giant Mtayanda will all make their comebacks after pre-season injuries, while others including Tjiuee Uanivi and Keegan Daniel (again) will enjoy a first run-out since joining the team.

Former Sharks and Lions winger Mark Richards is also back in the mix this year and will play left wing for the second-chukka side.

Sharks XV:
First Chukka: 15 Alrin Eksteen, 14 Neil Maritz, 13 Nkululeko Marawana, 12 Heimar Williams, 11 Sipho Mkhize, 10 Inny-Christian Radebe, 9 Stefan Ungerer, 8 Ayron Schramm, 7 Jean Deysel, 6 Keegan Daniel, 5 Johan du Toit, 4 Giant Mtyanda, 3 Thomas du Toit, 2 Andrew du Plessis, 1 Mzamo Majola

Second Chukka: 15 Kelvin Elder, 14 Wandile Mjekevu, 13 Neil Maritz, 12 Heimar Williams/ Sandile Khubeka, 11 Mark Richards, 10 Inny-Christian Radebe/ Jose Rodrigues, 9 Stefan Ungerer/ Dillon Marcus, 8 Keegan Daniel/ Tera Mtembu, 7 Jean Deysel, 6 Khaya Majola, 5 Tjiuee Uanivi, 4 Giant Mtyanda/ Wian Vosloo, 3 Gerhard Engelbrecht, 2 Chris de Beer, 1 Dale Chadwick

Third Chukka: 15 Malcolm Cele, 14 Wandile Mjekevu, 13 Marcel Coetzee, 12 Sandile Khubeka, 11 Zweli Silaule, 10 Jose Rodrigues, 9 Dillon Marcus/ Michael Reid, 8 Tera Mtembu, 7 Johan du Toit, 6 Ray Williams, 5 Tjiuee Uanivi, 4 Wian Vosloo, 3 Thinus Volker, 2 Greg Bauer, 1 Barend Potgieter

  • Is Giant not on loan from the Pumas – so he would surely not be eligible to play for the Sharks in the Currie Cup? I assume he is included to keep him match fit for the Super squad.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 7) : Bauer is an abrasive hooker..think still playing at Collegians. Has a few Sharks XV caps or u21 caps i think. Useful player, decent scrummager. Rodrigues is fairly new to the scene, playing at toti now i think. Quick player…takes the ball to the line with a decent passing game. Havnt seen to much of his kicking game though.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 22) : The thing is that all those clubs you have mentioned are way more professional than the Toti boys. Toti has the potential to become one of the big players in the SA club scene if they can only attract more sponsors and become semi-professional like the other top clubs. Back when I played for Toti, you used to be glad to receive a little envelope with enough money in for a couple of beers after the match, but I have to say i’m not sure how it is there now.

  • @robdylan (Comment 27) : @JD (Comment 28) : yes, when faced with taller opposing wingers,he would most probably be dominated in the contest for the high ball.but then jason robinson should also never have played int rugby on the wing and at fb.admittedly, jason robinson was a special talent-speed,strenght,step.a player like richards can give the sharks cc team attacking options from the back, and counter-attacking those aimless or not-well-chased kicks.

Don’t think he spends enough time on kicking at training, but I think he makes up for that with the rest of his game. Hope his ego doesn’t get in the way though, wonderful talent, but a bit of a hot head…

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 23) : I fully agree with you. Part of the season i stopped playing is that trying to do a full day job then train you just cant compete with ‘semi pro’ guys trying to make it. I really do admire those guys with fulltime jobs that still find the time to do it.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 25) : @JD (Comment 28) : @Here be dragons (Comment 33) : Mark Richards will never leave yu in doubt about his heart or commitment but the guy is just too smal and lightweight. Guys like Kolbe, Aplon etc are short but those guys are seriously muscular and strong…Robinson another example. But even Kolbe showed last year that when faced with trying to tackle Naholo he is just a speed bump. Rugby does cater for all sizes…but where those sizes are employed is the key. In the same thinking that a guy like Coenie Oosthuizen probably shouldnt play at centre…a guy like Richards probably shouldnt be at fullback. I have heard he did run at scrumhalf in a couple of the Rovers preseason games though.
