Stormers start with biggest guns

Frans Malherbe and JC van Rensburg will start in the front row for the Stormers this week in a rather back-handed compliment to the strength of the Sharks as a scrumming unit.

Robbie Fleck, in the two games they’ve played to date, has opted to start with the less experienced Ollie Kebble and Vincent Koch, opting to bring his stronger props on in the second half. This week, it’s clearly felt that no chances can be taken against a Sharks scrum that the Cape side rates. “The scrums will be a massive challenge for us against the Sharks and we are really looking forward to it,” says Malherbe of the upfront clash.

Schalk Burger and Nizaam Carr play musical chairs in the back row, with space opening up for Siya Kolisi to start on the flank. The final change to the side sees Kurt Coleman start at flyahlf for injured Rob du Preez, with another former Sharks age-group player, Jean-Luc du Plessis primed for a debut off the bench.

Stormers: 15 Cheslin Kolbe, 14 Dillyn Leyds, 13 Johnny Kotze, 12 Juan de Jongh (co-captain), 11 Leolin Zas, 10 Kurt Coleman, 9 Jano Vermaak, 8 Schalk Burger, 7 Siya Kolisi, 6 Nizaam Carr, 5 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Frans Malherbe (co-captain), 2 Bongi Mbonambi, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg.
Replacements: 16 Scarra Ntubeni, 17 Oli Kebble, 18 Vincent Koch, 19 JD Schickerling, 20 Sikhumbuzo Notshe, 21 Nic Groom, 22 Jean-Luc du Plessis, 23 Huw Jones.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 17) : For me, the game plan has to be attacking the Coleman channel, almost certain that is why Schalk is playing 8 and bomb the Stormers back three all day long. Make them do the running from deep. I still am not convinced that we can try and attack them up front, in 2 days we will find out.

He is blady huge and incredibly strong, he held up Lood last week like he was a back… Carr is the perfect size for the way he plays, he is non abrasive and plays more attacking, much like Notshe. Kolisa and Schalk are direct in your face players and I have a feeling I know exactly what Fleck is thinking by picking them

I think some of these stats are incorrect – the Bulls claim Warrick Gelant is 100kg which seems far too heavy.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 41) : Ja, I am afraid they have both already had troubles with their knees, they both suffered a bit with their knees in matric and you will find they are often strapped and then iced after the game. They need to be careful with their conditioning going forward, they are more than big enough and must hang off the weights a bit if you ask me. Carrying so much bulk is risky, especially when it is upper body heavy. I always laugh when guys try take JL or Dan high, they are so incredibly powerful up top, you just have no chance, however, if I was a coach, I would tell my players to always aim low on them, it is their one weakness

  • @SheldonK (Comment 78) : with botha and potgieter to be added to the squad, imo just lack another tighthead prop.lets see how thomas goes there.but signing one could also free coenie up to play at no1. options at no3 adriaanse coenie thomas no1 beast schoeman thomas coenie. majola and potgieter from the u21s.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 85) : For me the locks to come into the squad would be Botha, Mtyanda,Uanivi, Potgieter and then loose forwards Deysel, Bothma, Mthembu, Majola, Daniel with Potgieter able to play loose forward too. Not sure on Kleinhans injury status?

  • @SheldonK (Comment 84) : @50shadesofshark (Comment 86) : think Potgieter should play 7 unless guys like EO and Giant is unavailable, in those situations he can shift to 4 .

  • @robdylan (Comment 88) : I did possibly miss somethings he did then as he was alright at the lineout…cant remember him carrying much or doing anything specific on defense. Maybe Andrews is just more noticeable. As i said im fully giving Lewies more time as he has literally just started playing after ages.

  • @The hound (Comment 98) : He can start playing again from April onwards. He is allowed to practice with the team if I recall correctly so he’ll probably need game-time to get some match-fitness back.

  • @The hound (Comment 98) : from the pics i saw at training,he looks lean.perhaps a bit too lean for hooker?but the gym should sort that out.from when i saw the last pic till he is allowed to play again,is about 8 weeks.
