Don’t look back in… well… anything

For Sharks fans tempted to engage any further in retrospective bickering on social media relating to Saturday’s penalty try at Newlands, I have but one things to say. Focus on the Bulls.

The Stormers game is over – it’s history. The points are in the bag and whether you agree or disagree with a key decision made by the match officials, there’s absolutely nothing you can do to change it. We bitched for weeks after we felt the Bulls had been awarded a try against us unfairly last year; I went back and checked and you know what? That result still stands to this day. In short, steer clear of pointless discussion; we don’t need to prove anything to Jonathan Kaplan, Ashfak Mohamed or any of the others that seem to still be so hot under the collar about this one two days after the fact.

Sometimes in this game, the ball bounces for you and other times it doesn’t. Every team in history has been on the receiving end of more poor decisions than you could possibly count, but for every one that goes against you, there’s one that goes for another team. Swings and roundabouts over the course of time, but the reality is you have to play well enough to remove “refereeing error” as a factor. I’d be very worried as a Stormers fan if my only hope of winning Saturday’s game rested on that penalty try not being awarded. Perhaps they’re not as good as they think they are after all and Robbie Fleck ought to consider a “different path” of his own.

But for the Sharks, the eyes have to be firmly on Friday night’s clash at Loftus. Gary Gold has been at pains to point out that, while the Newlands victory was one worth savouring, the focus has already moved on. The Sharks are not dwelling on their draw, instead taking things one game at a time, but in the backs of the minds must be the fact that the fixture list coming up is brutal and that these three wins in a row ultimately don’t mean all that much.

The Sharks have found ways to win in all three of their games to date despite not really playing to their potential – particularly on attack. We all know that developing that ruthless level of perfection in the attacking game takes time – perhaps even more than a season – but as Gary Gold has pointed out, defending for 60 minutes of every contest is going to take a massive toll and the Sharks simply have to find a way to attack more in weeks to come. That’s not romantic – that’s just self preservation.

Let’s make the mental shift away from Newlands and particularly, let’s ignore all the smoke that a fickle media corps now seems determined to blow up the asses of Gold and his team (having seemingly decided to eschew Fleck’s posterior for the time being). To Loftus we go, where another huge challenge awaits!

  • Agreed. It’s a win in our column and I’ll gladly take it.

So what are our thoughts on the Bulls? They come off a bye which may count against them in the opening minutes but they’re playing at home and can’t be underestimated there.

  • On point Rob. Also, the only thing sweeter than smacking the Stormers at Newlands, is klapping the Bulls at Loftus. And it is happening this weekend. Oh yes oh yes!

  • But I find the whole discussion interesting… as it shows how badly the rules of rugby are written (I know i just spoke againts the hallow tome that is the laws of rugby).

I mean J. Kalpan is right to say that it was no a foul as according to law 10.2 (a) “Intentionally Offending. A player must not intentionally infringe any Law of the Game, or play unfairly. The player who intentionally offends must be either admonished, or cautioned that a send off will result if the offence or a similar offence is committed, or sent off.” because it could easily be construed that it was an unintentional/knee jerk movement which caused the incident.

But Jonkers is also right that the law 22.4(f) “In this situation [Refers to a player being tackled near to the opponents’ goal line so that this player can immediately reach out and ground the ball on or over the goal line], defending players who are on their feet may legally prevent the try by pulling the ball from the tackled player’s hands or arms, but must not kick the ball.” and a kick according to IRB laws just means the ball touched a player below the knee (excluding the heel) and moved visibly… nothing about intent.

This is what makes Refs lives difficult… and frustrates spectators as we see inconsistencies… In fact you can look on you tube and see “Brilliant try saves” where a player blatantly comes behind to kick the ball out of the try scores hand.

But I wont lie its nice to come out on top of a controversial decision… and all the Stormers lost was bragging rights as they are still 5 points ahead of their nearest log competitor, where a loss would put us in tie first place with the lions.

  • Still don’t agree with the try, I think if the roles were reversed, we would be very miff about it.

But rightly stated above Rob, time to carry on.

The Bulls won’t be easy this weekend, but I will really surprised if they give us a hard time. Unless the Sharks feel they are favourites and don’t rock up to the game at all (ala The Stormers this past weekend).

They don’t have the muscle up front to test us like the Stormers did, and our backline should have too much for them as well. It might be an ideal time to look at resting one of the SARU contracted players, otherwise it will be an enforced rest next weekend, at home against the Crusaders.

  • Must say, I didn’t think or know, that Kolisi’s effort was illegal. In fact, the first time that I can remember the kick being blown as illegally dislodging the ball in the try scoring motion, was when the Jag player kicked the Cheetahs player in the head, while attempting to kick the ball, in round 1.

I certainly would not have complained had the call gone for the Stormers, as I thought Kolisi actually did well. However, apparently it is a rule that you are not allowed to play they ball out of a players hands with your feet and therefore I believe the call was right. I thought Kolisi did brilliantly, and honestly believed he attempted to dislodge the ball with his foot. I didn’t check the rule though, is it only when the play with the foot is seen as dangerous? Because it wasn’t dangerous?

Am I right in saying that only Beast and JPP have contracts? Or am I missing someone? Coenie?

One would think, and this is saying that SARU actually think about something, that they would try force us to rest Marcell, surely he will be key going forward. But then again, he didn’t go to the World Cup, so he can’t be that integral to the bigger scheme of things…

Can’t understand the thinking in resting wingers, surely they don’t take nearly the same amount of strain as say a prop. But anyway, we aren’t in such a bad spot in terms of resting players then, that is good.

Personally though, I still wouldn’t want to see anyone arguing that refs should rule on intention while defending our point of view. That’s just too slippery a slope for my liking no matter if I’m for or against the ruling. There’s way too much room for interpretation in rugby as it stands.

  • @fyndraai (Comment 30) : Don’t get me wrong I agree with you, Fouls are made up of both intentional and unintentional actions. I also agree that the Penalty try was valid, and the yellow card was a little stiff… It just seems that most of the people saying that it was not a penalty seem to claim that Kolisi never intended to commit a foul therefore there is no foul (Kaplan is included in this bunch)… and the only justification for this is as you state is an overstretching of 10.2 (a)… But then the laws are at fault if they can be misinterpreted which gives us the debate today.

  • @Warren Harvey (Comment 4) : I won’t say too much because I feel paragraphs 1 and 2 of this piece are directed at me

However, you have identified the one ambiguity in the laws that Kaplan et al are having issues with. The wording of the penalty try laws refer to “foul play” and when many consider Kolisi’s act was “unintentional” it’s hard to square the sanction with the “crime”.

When there is ambiguity in any statute or laws you have to look further to interpret their meaning. In this case, fortunately, we are able to derive assistance from the wide definition given within the laws of what is “foul play”:

    “DEFINITIONS
Foul play is anything a player does within the playing enclosure that is against the letter and spirit of the Laws of the Game. It includes obstruction, unfair play, repeated infringements, dangerous play and misconduct which is prejudicial to the Game.”

This wide definition (particularly the words “anything a player does within the playing enclosure that is against the letter and spirit of the Laws of the Game”) to my mind sufficiently covers the contravention by Kolisi of rule 22.4(f) without having to consider his intention. And in this regard, Jonker was 100% correct – it was a kick of the ball out of Reinach’s hands in the process of scoring a try.

Aaaaaand that is the last I have to say on the matter! On to the Bulls. I really am hopeful that we will beat them this weekend.

  • @Warren Harvey (Comment 34) : @Sharks_have_Character! (Comment 35) : Here is an interesting IRB ruling from 2004:

“Ruling Law 10.2(a) is Unfair Play relating to Intentional Offending.
The two paragraphs in Law 10.2(a) must be read in conjunction, having due regard to the heading ‘Intentionally
    Offending’.
Therefore, if a penalty try is awarded as the result of a player intentionally offending, then the player must be
either be cautioned and temporarily suspended or sent off.
Examples of this would be after penalty tries resulting from:
    • a collapsed scrum
    • a collapsed maul
    • a defending player intentionally offside
    • a defending player intentionally knocking down the ball.
If a penalty try is awarded as the result of a player unintentionally offending, the player, as well as being liable
to cautioning and temporary suspension or send off, can be admonished by the referee.
Examples of this may be after penalty tries resulting from:
    • mistimed tackle (early or late, but not dangerous)
    • unintentional reactionary high tackle, but not dangerous.”

So clearly a penalty try can and should be awarded for an “unintentional” act contrary to the laws of the game. However, the giving of the yellow card can be debated, but according to this ruling it is not out of the official’s authority to give a yellow card in such a situation.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 37) : So a player does not have to “intentionally” infringe, if a mistimed early tackle that is not dangerous is penalized with a penalty try, then surely a player “unintentionally” kicking the ball out of the possible try scorer’s hands is also penalized with a penalty try.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 38) : whichever way you look at it – whether the defending player has any intention or not – you cannot have a situation in rugby where a defender kicks the ball out of a try scorer’s hands without a penalty try being awarded. It’s not suitable for the game. It shouldn’t be permitted even if it was unintentionally done because to rob the scorer of a probable try just does not sit right.

This is what the law presently is.

I see no grey area here.

Why some people want to add in ann extra layer of subjectivity is beyond me.

I know that rugby has become such a global sport and that most of these guys are friends with players from other teams, and I also think that the big win should have been spent with team mates, not the opposition after the game, it was a huge win for us, nad if he is the leader they want he should be setting an example to the younger guys

  • @Henkb (Comment 60) : he is not the leader. They dropped him. And how do you know he did not infact share a beer or two? Can anyone actually say he has not given his all to the team on tye playing field? No you cannot. How do you know he is not being treated as an outsider after his announcement either? Just some questions to make you think. Nothing more, nothing less.

  • @Ice (Comment 62) : i did not say that he is a bad person, in fact I admire the guy for what he is on the field, although he has been cleared of the captains arm band he is still one of the senior guys in the squad and should still lead by example, on the field which he does with every ounce of him, that is no given and no one can take that away from him, and for that I will still admire him as a Shark until the day he departs, I have also not said that he did not give his all, and believe me i know that after a win like we had on the weekend it would not have stayed at a beer or two, the only thing I’m trying to say is that he should still be an example to the younger guys off the field also, and not go gallivanting with “enemy” friends after a game away from the team

  • I personally don’t see the big deal. These guys are Springbok mates. They’re letting their hair down after a hard game. It’s not like we’re in opposing armies or something, I think it’s fine to treat the players like adults with private lives (as long as this isn’t abused). We can’t expect the Sharks squad to spend 24/7 holding hands singing Kumbaya, some time apart is good too (now I’m sounding like a marriage counsellor).

  • @Ice (Comment 64) : look, i understand that it is a sensitive issue for you being so close to him, irrespective of time, you don’t have sevens player going to a NZ part after the final match they stay with one another and that is how team spirit is build and galvanized, I also don’t say that they should be in each others faces 24/7, according to my views he should have stayed with the team, the example now for the young guys is that when a game is done, go out and have fun which ever way you want, take a close look at Kurtley Beale and James O”Coner, that was the example that they got when still fresh into the team setup

  • @Henkb (Comment 67) : didnt they make a lot of shit too? Henk, these guys have families too. His wife and parents, sister and brother travel by road to support him as well. So yes, I tend to disagree. He has obliged by having a party with fans and teammates. I remember the first time I met him. His parents, then girlfriend and siblings were braaing. He came to greet his parents, then went to the function. Then much later he came to fetch her and the young ones went out. Not with teammates. They all did their own thing.

  • @Ice (Comment 68) : I think you don’t get the point that I’m trying to make here, you are entitled to your vies and I will stick to mine, I do not say that they should not spend time with family and friends, they should just know when to do it, and spending time with a on field enemy “directly” after a game was not the right thing to do, I take it that they are good friends or even more than just good but might be very close friends off the field, but if he spent the time with a family member (Wife, mom, dad ext) or even all of them I would have even given him more time as time relaxing is also needed, the thing that bugs me insane as that it was with two stormer guys

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 90) : think they would have rather spent the evening with the “enemy” than to sit somewhere being forced to listen to the legend of the game telling them just exactly why the team lost because he was no longer part of the match day 23, I would have rather had a cup of java with a whining dust mite than had to sit through that ordeal, so i Think they might have taken him along to be a body guard as they saw just how the got their asses handed to them earlier in the day

We can be sure he did not intend to give away a penalty try…..or any try for that matter…and he certainly did not intend to be carded.

  • Another pearler from Fleck – “Marcell Coetzee was awarded Man of the Match for his breakdown performance last Saturday, but I felt Nizaam was pretty close to winning that award.” – in justifying selecting Carr at open side.

Use that loose trio again against the Brumbies, and it will be a lot of pain for the Streamers.

I did notice at one breakdown Marcell went for a steal but his elbows hit the floor. He immediately stopped contesting and made sure the ref could see that. How often do you see players do that?

  • @fyndraai (Comment 94) : Someone said the ref should officiate action nit intention. That made a lot of sense to me. Besides Stormers supporters should maybe focus more on why their team apart from a lucky or soft try in the first half did nothing else but a 3 point penalty and in the second did the same. Does that look like a team who had the ability to win? Bigger issue need answers than the try.
