Impi bounce back in style

Facing an uphill struggle to obtain promotion to the Varsity Cup next year (after an unexpected setback against UWC on Saturday), Michael Horak’s UKZN Impi side showed tremendous composure in dispatching Fort Hare yesterday 97-0, in a 14-try drubbing.

Level on log points with nearest rivals Wits (but behind on points difference) going into the game, Impi know that their destiny is no longer solely in their own hands, but set about their task of controlling their own controllables very well, in the process achieving a number of key objectives and keeping the pressure on Wits. Obviously every log point is now crucial and Impi had sewn up the five for the victory (including the try bonus point) before the first strategy break 20 minutes in. Knowing that their best chance of overtaking Wits was through superior points difference, they continued to pile on the pressure and the points – the end result was that they managed to overturn a deficit of 68 and even add 29 points extra.

Wits are still very much in the driving seat, though, in terms of this promotion race. They have two games left, against TUT and UWC and you’d fancy that a bonus point win in each of those should see them overtake Impi once more , provided they are able to increase their own points difference while doing so. Impi only have one more match to play (also against TUT) and while they’ll be looking to add another 50 or so to their points difference (or perhaps even more), you’d fancy that Wits would be able to eclipse whatever total they are set over the course of two games.

The slight hope here is that Wits’s second game, against UWC, is just two days after their first and with the Cape side potentially still close enough on the log to snag second position with a win, that game might not be a formality for Wits. After all, All Impi really need is for them to drop one log point somewhere along the way.

UKZN(97): Tries Adam Wessels, Blake Mingay, Grant Rattray (2), Kerron van Vuuren, Marius Louw, Pierre Van der Walt, Shayne Makhombe (2), Thobekani Buthelezi (2), Tristan Blewett (2), Wikus Badenhorst. Conversions Tristan Tedder (9)

  • We HAVE to get a bonus point from 1 game, WITS HAVE to get a bonus point from two. Holding thumbs.

  • Just shows how Bonus Points distort a log. UKZN beat Wits twice but are now in danger of not finishing top because they only lost 1 game…

  • The Bonus point system is a farce. A team with more wins should always finish higher and the 4 try bonus favours teams who go all out attack. Attacking teams aren’t necessarily good teams. Why on earth should a losing team get a four try bonus point?

Imagine this scenario and the controversy:

In a World Cup group a team (e.g. SA) wins all four pool games with no bonus points and finishes on 16 log points.
In the same group, England lose to SA by less than seven, but get four tries. They then win their other 3 matches with four tries. England finish on 17 log points and go through top of the log!

  • @JD (Comment 4) : Perhaps but fact is that the side that wins the most games is the best side. Bonus points distort that.

  • @SeanyJMc (Comment 5) : I fully agree. Losing teams should never get a bonus point.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 6) : Varsity rugby want to promote attacking running rugby so bonus points is here to stay. Impi knew that when the competition started and should have scored more bonus points.
All is not lost Wits must score to bonus point victories and the second one will be tough as it is against UWC and only two days after the first match.

  • I may be imagining this but doesn’t the runner-up in the Shield competition get to play a promotion / relegation match against the bottom Cup side?

  • @JD (Comment 8) : I know the Bonus Points are here to stay. It seems they want to promote running rugby but definitely not defense. Either way it could very possibly lead to the team winning the most games doesnt finish top of the log and any way you look at it thats not a true reflection.

  • @JD (Comment 8) : Their crazy 38 point pinball try scoring option should sort out the “attacking rugby” bit.

  • We should scrap the losing bonus point in Super Rugby too.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 10) : @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 11) : personally I like the way this seasons Super rugby bonus point system work. Only one team can score a bonus point for tries! Every team has an equal chance of scoring bonus points you must just score the tries to ensure you get them.

  • @JD (Comment 14) : I agree as well. Love the new try scoring bonus point in super rugby. Means teams have to play total rugby till the final whistle if they want reward. If they got rid of that silly losing bonus point id be very happy.

  • @JD (Comment 24) : I get that if the winning team stops playing they may not get a try scoring bonus point so only leave with 4. But i still dont like rewarding the losing team and in effect reducing the win by the winning team. A team that loses should not get a point

  • @SheldonK (Comment 25) : No doubt that Bosch is a talent and will probably come right as he gets more settled but a start should be earned, not assumed. Kudos then to Horak for rewarding form over hype.
