Gary Gold has picked a strong team for Saturday’s encounter with the Crusaders, reversing a number of the rotational changes that were made ahead of last week’s game at Loftus.

Jean-Luc du Preez, one of the stars of the early rounds and winner of two consecutive Man of the Match awards, returns to the squad after sitting out the Loftus trip with a foot injury. He comes straight in at blind-side flank, with Philip van der Walt shifting to his favoured position at the back of the scrum. Daniel du Preez, who has started every match so far this year, plays off the bench. with veteran Keegan Daniel making way for him.

Coenie Oosthuizen and Franco Marais, both of whom played off the bench last week, come back into the starting team at tight-head prop and hooker respectively. The final change sees Cobus Reinach come in as starting scrum half, with all of Lourens Adriaanse, Kyle Cooper and Michael Claassens moving to the bench.

The backs outside of Reinach are completely unchanged and Gold will be looking for a lot more rhythm and accuracy on attack from his back division, after they failed to fire in Pretoria.

Sharks: 15. Willie Le Roux, 14. JP Pietersen, 13. Paul Jordaan, 12. Andre Esterhuizen, 11. Lwazi Mvovo, 10. Joe Pietersen, 9. Cobus Reinach, 8. Philip van der Walt, 7. Jean-Luc du Preez, 6. Marcell Coetzee, 5. Stephan Lewies, 4. Etienne Oosthuizen, 3. Coenie Oosthuizen, 2. Franco Marais, 1. Tendai Mtawarira (Captain)
Replacements: 16. Kyle Cooper, 17. Juan Schoeman, 18. Lourens Adriaanse, 19. Hyron Andrews, 20. Daniel du Preez, 21. Michael Claassens, 22. Garth April, 23. Odwa Ndungane

  • Im happy with that team. Probably the strongest we can offer currently. Hoping Pieterson has shaken off that last kick. I think this game could be one final push for some of the guys before getting rotated out for a rest. Preventing the Crusaders from scoring off our errors will be crucial in this game.

  • Generally a good side. Had my say on the Congrats thread, but really thought an explosive game breaker off the bench would be more appropriate against a Kiwi side.

  • Good team. The guys just need to focus on holding onto the ball much longer, and build some pressure. Give the Crusaders as much territory and possession as we did the Stormers and Bulls, and we will really regret it.

  • We need to kick a hell of a lot less then we have been. Kicking onto the Saders backs will not go well.

I know it won’t be pretty or fun to watch, but I think the best way to win the game is keep the ball in the forwards as much as we can. When in doubt, play Jake ball.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 11) : Unless we can improve our ball retention and handling drastically (currently ranked 17th for passes completed and 14th on offloads completed), we are going to have to kick a lot for territory and then rely on our defense and turnover ability to counter-attack. However we will have to find a way to kick into space as much as possible and not directly to a Crusaders player.

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 12) : Statistically Hyron has done more on the field per minute played than either of the starting locks so……
He is equal to Lewies, and double EO in lineouts stolen, and only played a fraction of the minutes they have.

EO beats both in defense and turnovers easily, so statistically Lewies is the weak lock currently.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 15) : We’re safer letting them run at us with a set defensive line. Our defense is one of the best the the tourny, we only struggle in broken play, which kicking on the Saders backs will create a lot of.

And Lewies I think is still working on getting back to his best. But ja, as a number 5 lock, Hyron has been good, guess we will see a different type of lock on the bench once EO get’s given a rest

Against the Kings he was ok, and since then he has reverted to type. He has been a ball killer all season.

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 21) : Exactly, Hyron is a 5 and has been playing like a pretty decent 5 when on the field. Right now EO has been one of the best players in the team, so no need to swap him out. I know there is always that urge to give fringe players a run, but right now consistency is key and I think GG agrees with that.

  • Good team and am glad Van der Walt is starting, believe he deserves it. I think bringing a pumped Dan on at the end is a great idea as he’ll bring some serious brute force and intensity at the end.

I would have had a more explosive back than Odwa but he has done little wrong this season and a composed mind may be required at the end.

Hyron does look a little thin but most locks do in their early career and feel it’s great that we are backing him as a youngster (the Boks and Bulls backed Matfield and look how that turned out).

I find it infuriating as he is a class act and when he is motivated he is dangerous but getting him motivated to play his heart out seems to be the issue. JP with the heart of Marcell or either of the du Preez twins would be a very dangerous player.

Stats alone don’t tell the complete story, but you are correct that they are at least an objective measure on which to base a discussion.

As the discussions on Andrews, Esterhuizen and JP have shown, opinions are rife and usually wildly inconsistent. Stats at least provide a firm base to debate from – I therefore really enjoy your weekly stats article.

    @Poisy (Comment 39) :
Case in point regarding subjectivity. I don’t have a recent example of JP’s pace, but there are several older videos and interviews from the likes of Butch that JP was the second quickest Bok behind Habana. What objective evidence do you have that he is slow?

I think Hulk is spot on and the issue is work rate and also the role he seems to be playing nowadays. He seems to play a lot more like a 13 and tries to breach the defensive line and off-load – like the Stormers try. Personally, I preferred him when he focused on scoring himself. Wings and strikers must be selfish.

  • I really enjoy stats, but as long as there is accurate context. Unfortunately most manipulate the context surrounding stats to “prove” their own subjective view. This is often done by simply ignoring important context, or fabricating seemingly minor context.

If someone does not like player 12, he/she might pick out that the player had the most handling errors in a match and conclude that he is rubbish. But what if player 10 consistently passed at his ankles?

A person who likes player 12 would probably not choose to mention the handling errors but focus on his tackle count. What if his channel was really busy that game and although he tackled the most, his missed vs successful tackles ratio was the worst?

If he was in space and with no one in front of him, then you will see his pace. He is also a big guy and can’t change direction like a smaller wing like Habana. Another thing is that his style of running gives the elusion that he is slow.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 68) : haha im sure the coaches will be very keen to let everyone in on that information. Never going to happen. I know the sharks analyst fairly well. The programs that are available can give you a ridiculous amount of stats, and by ridiculous i mean pages and pages of xcel sheets. Coaches will brief the analyst before the comp and even before each game on the specific set of stats that they want for discussion at the team meetings. Oh and each stat created by the system is supported by a video clip from 3 angles.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 74) : not really. I’m a sailor and the wind usually picks up or dies down from 11am on anyday in durban which indicates what’s going to happen later. If a westerly is blowing hard on saturday after 11am than there will be showers later. A better site or app is windfinder which tells you strength of wind every 2 or 3 hours and what direction. It also has rain predictability but that part is very unreliable but the wind is usually bang on point

  • @SheldonK (Comment 74) : at 5pm for saturday it will be blowing a calm southerly of 8 knots gusting 11knots, there will be very little cloud cover and a chance of rain fall of 0.01mm so in other words it won’t rain. If it changes on saturday I will let you know I do some sailing from 9am-11am

In other news, after all that hullabaloo I see the NZ public voted to retain the old flag!

  • @durbsguy (Comment 82) : Apologies in advance for nerding out on you but I read up on that phrase not too long ago. It was only popularised by Mark Twain but is often incorrectly attributed to him. There’s some debate on who actually coined the phrase but it’s very likely that it’s someone we’ve never heard of.
