Impi pipped at the post

Wits beat UWC by 60 points to 13 in yesterday’s final Varsity Shield round robin match, in the process sewing up top spot on the competition log and most importantly, gaining automatic promotion to next year’s Varsity Cup competition.

Unlucky UKZN, who had fought bravely all season and only slipped up once (ironically, to UWC) ended up missing out on points difference only, that despite winning one more match that their Highveld rivals. The Impi, who in hindsight really needed to pick up more bonus points (or bigger wins) earlier in the competition, pulled off a big 72-8 win over TUT on Saturday, but alas, the resulting points difference target of 39 was just not enough to prevent Wits leapfrogging them.

The two sides meet in a rather meaningless final on 11 April, but for Impi, the big challenge is a looming play-off game against former Varsity Cup champions UCT to try and secure promotion the hard way. With a whole new set of laws and eligibility restrictions coming into play for that game, the odds remain stacked against Michael Horak and his men.

So do we know for a fact that there will be a promotion game this year?

    @bokbok (Comment 2) :
Nope, Wits will be added to the Varsity Cup without replacing any of the current teams. In the past, UCT would have been automatically relegated, with NMMU having to play promo/relegation. This time however, only UCT should be in danger of losing their spot (that is, if Promo/Relegation is actually played this year).

  • @Nostraseth (Comment 1) : this is anecdotal. Stuff like the 9-point try, for one thing. Also, I heard that we won’t be allowed to use first-year players, for whatever reason.

@bokbok (Comment 2) : dunno…. why would they be? UCT finished last?

  • @robdylan (Comment 4) : Thanks. The lack of available information when it comes to varsity rugby really does just reinforce my dislike for it.

  • @robdylan (Comment 5) : I’m a little bit miffed that UCT gets a century posted against them, yet lucky for them, this is the one relegation year in which they won’t be automatically relegated (as it used to be in previous relegation years).

If things were done fairly, and with Wits being added due to the expansion of Varsity Cup (and therefor not replacing the bottom team), Impi should have been the team replacing UCT in Varsity Cup.

  • @Nostraseth (Comment 6) : that and all the stupid experimental rules.

TBH with you, I would prefer the whole damn thing be scrapped. But if it’s going to be played, I want a KZN team to be involved.

  • Gotta love how Bonus Points dont give a fair reflection of the log at the end of the day. The team that wins the most games is the best team in my opinion anyway…guess not on paper though. Good luck against UCT…

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 7) : looking at the Shield season and applying the never-used “fairness” criterion, there’s little question that Wits and Impi both deserve to go up and that there’s absolutely nothing to separate the two teams bar the “bounce of the ball”

  • @robdylan (Comment 10) : “the never-used “fairness” criterion”

I like that….and “fairness” will especially be ignored when it comes to relegating UCT.

@Nostraseth (Comment 11) : Agree, that’s why I only really care about Varsity Shield, because of Impi representing the Sharks….Varsity Cup will garner my attention once Impi gains their deserved spot.

  • I don’t see them relegating uct no matter what happens in the games, they are gonna stack the odds against impi with bullshit rules and stipulations and if we still win than they will announce uct will stay aswell for whatever made up reason. John smit shhould just pay for impi to be involved this is south african rugby after all

  • Clearly the genius that came up with points difference as the first deciding factor for teams ending on equal points did not attend one of our ivy league varsities.

In what fantasy does the team that loses 2 games end above the team that loses 1 game.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 21) : @SheldonK (Comment 22) : main thing we kust remember as that at the start of the season the Ipmi knew what they had to do. It did not change during the year so Impi did not use their chance to get promoted!

  • @JD (Comment 23) : I would agree and disagree. The Impi knew at the start that they needed to win more games than any other team in the Shield. And well they did that. I disagree that they knew at the start that even though they won the most games that they wouldnt finish top.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 24) : sorry to say but think you’re way off! Never ever was winning the most games a guarantee of the top spot, if that was the case then why bother with log points? In every rugby competition that I know off it is log point and not most games won that will determine the top spot and if a coach does not know that then I have serious questions about his abilities as a coach!
If we agree with it or not is of little consequence as the rules of a competition is set before the start for all the teams.
I can’t remember a lot of people complaining about Impi being champions of the Varsity Shield when they beat Wits in the final even though they won more games than the Impi or did you complainted about it them? Fair is fair and they used the rules of the competition to beat the Impi to the top spot just like the Impi did last year to them!

  • @JD (Comment 26) : But thats not what the issue is – the issue is using points difference as a decider to determine the position of 2 teams ending on equal log points. Its plain stupid that a team that wins more games should end behind a team that has scored more points during the season. There are so many variables on any given day that can determine whether a game could be a high scoring game or an arm wrestle in a mud bath while a gale force wind is blowing.

  • @JD (Comment 26) : I think your mixing things up a bit. Impi won the Shield final so yes that was good. But they didnt finish top of the log that year, Wits did as they won the most games. Are you telling me the Wits side entered the comp knowing that even if they lost more games they would still win? My issue is with the points as my problem was that the team that won the most games and therefore the better team does not finish on top of the log. Thats not a fair reflection of the competition, irrespective how and when the points were set out. And why have a final when its a league format and when you have already rewarded the league winner? There are some good things about varsity cup…but the points systems arent one of them.

  • if a promotion place is going to be decided on points difference, then it’s only fair to ensure that the final games are played simultaneously.

Apparently Impis was docked 12 point for fielding an ineligible player through the season
