No Currie Cup for Pietersen – reports

It appears, based on reports, that Sharks utility back Joe Pietersen is set for a stint in Japan after Super Rugby this year.

Pietersen appears to have signed for the second-division Kamiashi Seawaves (important not to confuse them with the Kawasaki Landwaves) and will thus not be available to the Sharks for Currie Cup. Since the player ‘s current contract with the Sharks is still valid for at least a year, it’s to be assumed he will return for Super Rugby duty in 2017.

This move could actually work out well for the Sharks, with a number of young flyhalves needing regular game time in the Currie Cup. Garth April and Inny-Christian Radebe should be the men entrusted with the duties, while the likes of Tristan Tedder and Curwin Bosch have both done well in Varsity Shield and will also soon stake a claim for higher honours.

The Sharks have yet to either confirm or deny Pietersen’s move.

  • I reckon this is a very good thing let the youngsters get experience before SR next year.

  • Will Tedder not play u/21 CC this year?

I’d imagine Bosch is eligible for u/19 CC rugby.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 3) : I fully anticipate Tedder and Bosch will play age-group this year.

April, Radebe and maybe even Jose Rodriguez are the buys likely to play Currie Cup.

  • sharks know what they have in joe pietersen.this is a good move because it gives sharks opportunity to play lesser experienced no10′s without also having to pay joe’s contract fee.think it was a smart decision to sign for a 2nd div club.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 9) : Morne Joubert possibly also in with a shout. Mvovo too. Id be happier with trying Sithole at 15 than 13…

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 9) : Those were my thoughts. I was wondering if we had a specialist fullback or a retread player. I’m not sure if April is a fullback first then a flyhalf or the other way round. Anyhow I’d have my back three for Currie Cup as Sithole, Odwa and I suppose Mjekevu (although he is yet to impress me). I’m assuming Mvovo, Pietersen and Willie will all be with the Boks.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 10) : Interesting move but what in Sitholes performances suggests he’d make a good 15? I’ve never thought of him as a fullback (granted I never thought of Mvovo as a fullback and he did well).

  • @Hulk (Comment 12) : Firstly let me say i dont think we will ever see Sithole at 15…but then again there was a stage though that of Mvovo. The reason behind my thinking is twofold. 1. Sithole hasnt really shone at 13- and i think he plays like a winger in that position. What Sithole first shone and showed a lot of potential was with the 7s. At 7s he has space to receive and run with the ball and find the gaps…which is pretty much what he would do at 15. Those questioning his skills under the high ball- wingers need to have those skills too. I am not sure how proficient his kicking is…but Mvovo’s was pretty average before he worked on it a bit too.

  • @robdylan (Comment 13) : I just have this sneaky feeling that he wont be. Not sure why… just think he isnt one of the first names on Joe Public lips when you think about Bok wings.

  • @Hulk (Comment 11) : I reckon Mjekevu, Joubert, Nkosi, Bosch will be the favourites to cover the CC qualifying back 3. I see Bosch is listed in the SA u20 squad as a 15

  • @Hulk (Comment 19) : Mvovo went through a bit of a stale patch, playing a bit at 15 rejuvenated him and made him push harder. It seems Sithole is in that same patch at the moment…he needs to be rejuvenated and given a challenge

  • I don’t begrudge Joe. He has been a very hard worker. I am really glad he joined the sharks. He should have done it years ago.

  • @robdylan (Comment 16) : I highly doubt he won’t be the choice winger. His exclusions was purely because of the previous regime. Any coach worth his salt will include him. I don’t see Habana remaining as first choice he was mediocre for most of the world cup.
