Three Sharks in Junior Bok training squad

Dawie Theron has named his 36-man provisional Junior Springbok training squad and as is usually the case, you can’t throw a stick without hitting at least one Blue Bull. Only three Sharks players have made the cut this year, which is perhaps not terribly surprising given the woes of the under 19 side last year.

All of the Sharks representatives are outside backs; big winger S’busiso Nkosi, who was one of the very few to consistently impress in Paul Anthony’s 2015 team, makes the grade, along with former SA Schools fullback Morne Joubert.

The third member is still under 19 this year and is, of course, the phenomenal young Curwin Bosch. Bosch has been included as a fullback, despite earning his SA Schools caps in the number 10 jersey last year.

Congrats to the three Sharks boys – as well as all the others.

  • Interesting Bosch is down as a fullback?

    Must be a typo?

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 1) : I dont think its a typo. He was also played at 15 for the SA schools side so perhaps thats where they see him more? I see the scrummy James Hall from EP is also included, he is an ex Durban school boy. I must admit im not too familiar with most of these guys so not sure of the strength of this side?

    Oh okay, interesting!

Would like to see how he goes, wherever they pick him. He won’t be around the Sharks setup much this year with these commitments.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 2) : @Richard Ferguson (Comment 3) : Tedder seemed more comfortable/settled at flyhalf in the Impi side which was not entirely unexpected but perhaps it’s wise to ease Bosch in at fullback. It may also take the spotlight off Bosch just slightly which can only be good thing at his age.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 4) :

Look, it won’t hurt the Sharks if he is a better fullback, might come in useful then later in the year with the Boks gone. With no Willie, and Joe P not there, he would go well at 15 while Radebe and April run the show from 10.

Makes for some interesting times ahead.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 4) : Yeh look Tedder is a very composed flyhalf…always has been. He is perhaps a bit slight of frame to make an impact in senior rugby though. Morne Joubert is also a very good 15 so interesting to see how they accommodate everyone. Joubert is a big boy…would mind seeing him make an early conversion to 12/13

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 5) : Indeed, wouldn’t be very different from the way Lambie was introduced to senior rugby.

@SheldonK (Comment 7) : Tristan is taller than Lambie but he could use a bit more bulk. He still has the time on his side though. Between Tedder, Bosch & Radebe the future looks good in that position. I find the thought of a Joubert playing fullback for the Sharks one day oddly comforting for some reason

  • @vanmartin (Comment 8) : Yeh Tristan isnt short, but ive seen him a the gym and eish i think the oke is about to snap with some of those weights. Perhaps he does need a chat with Lambie about conditioning. Morne Joubert is a very good fullback- reminds me a lot of Louis Ludick, even Jacque Fourie in his younger days. At the moment Bosch reminds me of a Quade Cooper…he can be a game breaker but i dont know how many coaches will bet their house on him at 10 in a big game. But he is still young and can most certainly develop.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 9) : Agreed on pretty much everything. I think the point to take away is they all have time to address inadequacies. Let’s hope they do just that.

  • Back to the debate of contracting plenty of youngsters (a la Bulls) or few quality ones (a la Sharks). If we go the latter route and aim to produce 3-5 top class youngsters every year who can graduate to the senior side (which is them supplemented by good senior buys), then I can certainly live with these three fellows being our initial contribution to the senior ranks in the years ahead…

  • @SheldonK (Comment 31) : @50shadesofshark (Comment 32) : for me it’s not as easy as saying they must sign 10 or 15 players. A major factor will be the quality that’s available. Sign 12-15 good quality young players and if that is what they did then I stand corrected.

  • @JD (Comment 34) : Yes of course availability is a factor. Also its not always the guys that excel at school that excel after school as they need to have self discipline. Either way would you prefer signing talented guys irrespective of position or would you only sign like max 2 flyhalves etc?
