The SA Rugby site has been updated with squad lists for the Currie Cup Qualifying phase that kicks off this weekend. While these squads are not always completely accurate, they do often give us a pretty good indication of which players will be in the mix.

Here is the squad the Sharks have provided to SA Rugby, with some additional info where I have it. Please do not take this as final (or even confirmed by the union) but rather just a provisional or indicative list of players.

  • A lot of unknown names. Hopefully this competition unearths a diamond or two.

  • Interesting that its primarily the sharks juniors/club players. wonder if the extras in the super rugby squad will keep match fit playing here?

  • I know you said this isn’t the final squad Rob, but do you know if Gary Gold and co will be looking to use the Extended Currie Cup/Qualifying Currie Cup Round/Vodacom Cup by Another Name to keep the Super Rugby squad match fit.

I can’t say the squad above will strike fear into too many teams as a lot of the guys are youngsters, but having said that, it will certainly benefit our depth at the Sharks, make our u19s and u21s more competitive (depending on how many of the above players qualify for the u19s and u21s this year) and will benefit our Impi side (again depending on how many go back to play Varsity Shield (Cup?) next year.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 19) : I hate to say it as you do not wish anyone harm or misfortune, but this injury is the best thing that could have happened to the Stormers. Coleman is a journeyman at best, he is not a great player. I think if Du Plessis gets his head in gear, he can become a great player

  • @Vonno13 (Comment 21) : I see Stormers have only picked 1 flyhalf for their game. If Duplessis goes down early they could be in for a long day

  • @SheldonK (Comment 24) : Is Dylan Leyds playing? He was a fantastic flyhalf at school boy level. Al though it is playing with fire, perhaps they feel Dylan can step in should Du Plessis get injured.

To be honest, I also do not see the Sunwolves giving the Stormers too much headache, if I am honest, they are kak!

  • @Vonno13 (Comment 25) : Nope leyds isnt playing. They saying Godlen Masimla will cover flyhalf. Surprised they havnt given Leyds a run at 10 yet

  • @SheldonK (Comment 26) : @robdylan (Comment 27) : Well that is a problem then. Wow, do not think it will be a problem against the Sunwolves, but can hurt them going forward against the stronger sides.
