Impi slain by assegai from behind

“Ubani benagathintu amabubhesi? Who here can touch the lions?” That’s how the song goes. After going through an almost flawless Varsity Shield campaign in 2016, UKZN Impi have learned the answer to that question, with tournament organisers finding them guilty of a player eligibility breach and docking an astonishing 12 log points after the fact. For Impi, in other words, there will be no final this year and more importantly, no chance of a promotion play-off against a UCT Ikeys side that would be unlikely to stand a chance against them this year.

All is legal, all is above board. Of course that’s the case. Impi fielded an ineligible player throughout the campaign and were docked 2 logs points for each of the 6 games in which said player featured. That independent auditor KPMG signed the player off and missed the opportunity to point out this eligibility concern earlier in the year is perhaps moot, although it is rather interesting that eligibility problems affecting other teams were picked up far earlier and the teams were alerted to these situations in time to avoid catastrophic damage. I’m rather hopeful that at least some of the consequences of this mistake will be born by the auditing firm… at the moment, it looks as though the only ones suffering are the Impi players and coaching staff, who are entirely blameless in this matter to my way of thinking.

That the eligibility rules appear fluid, impossibly complex (in fact, so complex that KPMG’s somewhat unreliable services are required in the first place) and that nobody within the Impi set-up had any knowledge that they had done anything untoward is also moot. Rules are rules and you have to live by them. If the rules are unfair, then leave the competition. This is black and white, I would think. Rules are there to be enforced and Impi transgressed. The Varsity Cup organisers are right, surely, to throw the book at Impi?

Except that when Tuks fielded ineligible players throughout the 2013 competition (and actually won the trophy) they were let off with a reprimand. An interesting double standard, perhaps? Is it perhaps that certain teams are really important to the Varsity Cup organisers and those teams need protection? If I were a UCT supporter, I’d certainly fancy my chances of winning a relegation match against UWC, so at least one party got the result they wanted.

The Varsity Cup, to me, is forever tainted and a dead concept – one that I will no longer pay any attention to on these pages. From the bewildering and non-nonsensical last minute rules changes (both on and off the field) to the political intrigue and back-stabbing, I simply can no longer accept that this competition embodies the beautiful spirit of the game of rugby union. I’d like to thank the UKZN Impi players and management for their contribution this season, but I choose to focus my energies on real rugby henceforth.

  • Well a number of us called it way before this happened, that they would screw impi with rules because of uct. They will not relegate uct even if uwc beat them. If impi finished first they would have most likely let them off and try screw wits.

I said it before I will say it again, if smit wants impi in varsity cup he should just pay for it and watch how nicely they treet us

  • KPMG and the like don’t come cheap. I’ve worked with them on a number of projects in years past. It seems a shame that they can’t seem to be held accountable. Hope there’s some form of recourse the Impi can pursue in this matter.

  • My first reaction on hearing this story is that it is UKZN 100% to blame and then should fully accept the responsibility for their actions. The i read that KPMG have signed off on the players. Now is that is true then there shouldnt be any recourse and no way that UKZN could lose points. So only conclusion i can then come to is that the KPMG sign off was dodgey…

  • @Bronzi Shark. Its normally the transfer of a player from one club to another. There is a deadline where all transfers need to be signed off by the respective club chairmans. It is the 31st of January.

We realise that this has a major impact on their season and final log standing, but our rules regarding player eligibility are very clear and we stand firmly by them,” Varsity Cup CEO, Duitser Bosman said.
If your freaking rules were so clear how did YOUR AUDITORS sign off on the player in the first place. Shame on you…

“An opportune disputes hearing was held, where a totally-honest-would-I-lie-to-you chairman took the predetermined decision to deduct enough points from UKZN that they would not feature. We realised months ago that this could have a major positive impact on UTCs season and final log standing, but our rules regarding player eligibility are very clear and we stand firmly by them as long as it’s not against Tuks, UCT, or club that bares no threat to our favourites.”

However 5here are too many irregularities. KPMG need to be accountable too. I hear Tom a Varsity Cup media liaison that there may have been a wait to see if all papers or results got processed. The blame has now shifted to – it could have been the protests fault all this has happened. They disrupted proceedings.

Should just force VC to expand by another team next year – riots caused Impi to miss out on important home game against the only team that managed to beat them.

KPMG (VC’s appointed auditing firm) dropping the ball by advising Impi that all their players are eligible within the rules.

Two incidents outside of Impi’s control ensuring they miss out on promotion….tells me VC will have to take the fall on this one – expand VC by 2 teams, instead of one.

A few people have been shaken by this incident . I am certain VC will be held accountable if they don’t act. Just you wait. A few big guns are in play. This is big. We will not let them get away with it. I am sure. The excuse of students who have pro contracts is pathetic. It’s inception was for those who missed out on contracts and those prioritizing school.
