Good on you Gary – just don’t do it again!

More details have emerged regarding the transgressions that lead to Sharks man Gary Gold receiving a hefty fine from SANZAAR this week. Intrepid news-hound Mike “Gringo” Greenaway has given us his take on the IOL Website.

Greenaway surmises that Gold’s attitude and behaviour towards TMO Johan Greeff was in no small part influenced by a number of incidents that took place at Loftus last year. We provided ample coverage of those events at the time and felt that while there was, of course, nothing that could be done to change them, the sour taste certainly lingered. The feeling at the time was that Greeff’s suspiciously close links to the Blue Bulls union may have swayed his decisions. That’s a pretty alarming allegation, of course and not one to make lightly. Regardless of any veracity, it was felt that it would really be best if match officials were not appointed to handle games involving their own unions. I mean, that’s just common sense, right?

Fast forward to this year and as Gringo says, it’s pretty clear that Gold and Greeff aren’t on particularly good terms. The two incidents in the Crusaders match about which the Sharks coach got so worked up were serious and both make one again question Greeff’s impartiality, if not his competence. In the first instance, Greeff ruled that Willie le Roux has been in front of Cobus Reinach when the latter kicked the ball ahead and thus ruled out the try that could quite likely have won the game for the Sharks. Crucially, Greeff did not appear to have reviewed all of the angles and footage available to him and thus appears to have made an incredibly hasty (and most likely inaccurate) decision in favour of the Crusaders. The second incident was similar – there appeared to be a decent shout of a knock-on committed by a Crusaders player in the run-up to their late Kieran Reid try. Greeff again, seemingly, declined the opportunity to review that event using the replays available to him and opted to rather “wave it on” in real time.

Why? Why would a match official who is being paid to be impartial and fair and who has absolutely ZERO time pressure imposed on his actions opt to quite simply not do his job, twice, within the space of a few minutes? Gold’s allegation is that his behaviour was either blatantly incompetent or intentionally prejudicial and based on my understanding of the situation, I cannot disagree.

That the Sharks coach should have better controlled his emotions is not up for debate. I know that Gary Gold is a passionate man who sometimes wears his heart on his sleeve (it takes one to know one, after all) and I appreciate him standing up for his (and our) team against an injustice that to me is more than just perceived. Gary, what you did wasn’t right, but I completely understand why it happened and unless the governing bodies of our game make an urgent intervention to prevent poor TMO calls from influencing the outcome of matches, I feel that it’s only a matter of time before a more serious incident occurs.

  • In future Gary please write your grievances down and sign the letter and slide it under the TMO’s door. Thank you :)

  • Well done Gary! If nothing else, at least this incident puts the spotlight on slimy Greef and his dodgy calls. One would hope it would make him think twice in the future before officiating like a doos. a Man can dream right?

  • I understood it that the teams must agree with match officials before games. Unless it a question of thats how its suppose to be done?

  • @Another Nick (Comment 4) : Greef would serve the rugby community better if he limited his rugby involvement to wearing a blue safety helmet with horns and a blue jersey to Loftus on weekends.

  • The one thing that this incident tells me is that Gold is really passionate about the team. If he really was just a journeyman coach like some on here has suggested before, then he wouldn’t have given a rats front teeth about the results etc.

  • One can never condone the abuse of match officials and clear bias is uncommon in these guys given the levels of scrutiny, but Greef is in my opinion incompetent and doesn’t belong at this level.

Occam’s Razor applies. While we might like to think that he’s a biased cheat (because that makes us feel better) the simplest conclusion to come to here is that he is a buffoon who is out of his depth.

  • I just read an article were Bob Francis (Former NZL referee) says that GG punishment should have been more severe. O yes and of course he is from NZL.

But seriously it’s not the right thing to approach any match official regardless of how one eyed, blind eyed, blue eyed blinker wearing, incompetent they might be. So ja I think the letter under the door next time might be a better call.

  • One thing that Bob Francis must remember is that if you have the technology available and the time to make the right call then for heavens sake use it. If not, you will just open yourself up for abuse and anger.

  • @Farlington (Comment 18) : The Sharks should also consider technology to prevent this from happening again. Install a cattle prod inside the TMO’s chair and give the on switch to Gary to use as needed – nothing like a bit of negative reinforcement to make an end to bad habits.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 22) : Exactly that. For ages we have been complaining and moaning and groaning that there be consequences for officials. But of course all fell on deaf ears. And here’s what grinds my gears; we get that these people are also human after all. Humans make mistakes. That I can understand. But, when these guys make BLINDINGLY OBVIOUS mistakes, ALL THE TIME, even WITH the help of all the latest technology at their fingertips… that’s when it makes me to throw my tv out the window and say sorry for the neighbours about all the swear words.

  • Abusing a referee is really stupid and if he brought up last year’s issue he was being astoundingly stupid.

The Sharks and Gold now have a negative balance in the referee bank of good-will. You guys should prepare for some more 50/50 calls to go against the Sharks for a while.

Being respectful towards referees is in a coach or player’s best intrerest. Just look at what McCaw was able to get away with over the years by being respectful.
