Gary Gold has been able to keep continuity, for the most part, ahead of this weekend’s Super Rugby encounter against the Lions at Kings Park.

Philip van der Walt, who started in the number 8 jersey against the Crusaders in the last game, has been ruled out with a neck injury, but he is the only casualty after that bruising encounter, meaning a completely unchanged tight five and backline for this week’s game.

Daniel du Preez, who played off the bench last time around, is promoted to the starting team and will seek to continue the dynamic loose trio partnership with his brother Jean-Luc that was so valuable for the Sharks in the early stages of the season.

Keegan Daniel, who last played at Loftus three weeks ago, comes back into the squad in the number 20 jersey.

Sharks: 15 Willie le Roux, 14 JP Pietersen, 13 Paul Jordaan, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Joe Pietersen, 9 Cobus Reinach, 8 Daniel du Preez, 7 Jean-Luc du Preez, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 Stephan Lewies, 4 Etienne Oosthuizen, 3 Coenie Oosthuizen, 2 Franco Marais, 1 Tendai Mtawarira (captain).
Replacements: 16 Kyle Cooper, 17 Juan Schoeman, 18 Lourens Adriaanse, 19 Hyron Andrews, 20 Keegan Daniel, 21 Michael Claassens, 22 Garth April, 23 Odwa Ndungane.

  • Backing our boytjies for a fantastic win against a Lions team eager to better their Kings Park record. I felt Howard Mnisi was a weak link in defence for them last week vs Saders. He let a couple of tackles slip that led to 2 of their tries. If we can exploit that with Andre and have Jordaan running off his shoulder we could see some magic. Our defence once again will be key and our exit strategy has to be spot on. We all know how dangerous they can be with ball in hand. Ive been really impressed with Combrink, he has had a few good seasons and this season thus far he has been Springbok material. He can play wing or fullback, has a great boot, good under the high ball, has the vision of a 10 and he can slot kicks from inside his own half. But I still back our boys to pull of a great win.

To be honest this game leaves me quite conflicted, although I’ll be there supporting the Sharks as normal, I really enjoy the gameplan and attitude that the Lions have brought to the South African rugby landscape.

Coach of the Crusaders summed it up pretty well this week when talking about the different playing styles of the two teams, ‘One plays with the ball in hand, and the other doesn’t”. I really hope its not as clear cut as this on Sat and would love to see us have a go more often (where sensible and appropriate).

  • Real good move to replace Mnisi. Still backing the Sharks for a good solid win before the tour. This is a vital game for us. Would love to see our backline run a bit. Maybe more of Willie at first receiver on attack. Hopefully a little less but more accurate kicking. Big statement could be made at scrum and lineout time. Also our loose trio will have to be fired up against Whiteley, Kriel and Tecklenberg. Marcel to have another blinder!!!

  • @stevovo I agree. Our defence has been superb and has kept us in every game. If we kick it has to be more accurate. Our exit strategy will be vital. If we can pin them in their half, exert some real pressure on them and force them into mistakes, I do believe we have the potential out wide to score tries. JoeP has been solid at 10 but we really do miss Pat there. He gains the extra yards on his kicks and he gets our backs flowing. Like I said earlier, would like to see Willie more at 10 on attack

  • @JD they used him very effectively in the beginning. Andre has a big boot on him and it should be used. Between Reinach, Esterhuyzen and Willie we have 3 kickers that can gain more yards than JoeP but we still use Joe the most. Doesn’t make sense. Really hoping that April gets a bit more time on the field. He has good vision for a 10.

  • @SheldonK yes i agree he is certainly more consistent with his kicks but would you prefer to play from your own 10 or from their 10? I get what you are saying about Joe’s consistency and its great to have that but we need to get up field in order to play. There is another centre in Jordaan who can also clean rucks, so just little tweaks here and there.

I see Jaco Peyper is ref, anyone know when it was decided to demote him to such depths?
Not that I’m complaining, it’s quite funny seeing him running around in pouring rain in a match no one except a handful of people in Welkom care about.
Pity Greeff wasn’t also demoted to this game, they can post him right at the top of the stand without roof cover with a walkie talkie and a 7″ Walka, that’s about up to his speed

He would have to use lights, not flags….flags are entrusted to proper referees who are allowed close to the field of play as linesmen.

I would further suggest that Greeff can go sit in a bunker in Iraq.

  • Are we playing there okes into the ground ? Maybe, maybe not

would like too see beast come off earlier as i rate his replacement shoeman as a good young player and sometimes beast doesnt dominate in the scrum late on, but i do like giving young players a chance

I’d have sithole on the bench instead of odwa, im a big fan of odwa but sitholes better at this stage and its not like sithole lacks experience, infact maybe JPP needs to take a spot on the bench and let sithole start with all his pace and his good under the high ball, and can kick out of hand like a beast

the other change i would make would be to swap hyron with the namibian lock, as much as a like andrews, his being exposed too soon, and i liked what i saw of the nambian lock in the WC

Im still disappointed we lost bothma, but hope to see khaya majola abit this season

We simply have to win it, so play your best available team for as long as is possible and sensible. But I really hope we see a lot more rotation on tour. I agree with comments made on here that we should also throw everything at the Blues on our first game on tour, then rotate. I hope we do something like that…

Any way Reinarch could cost us this game, maybe you need to see him up against a real scrum half to appreciate my sentiments, pity Faf is not starting, but Ross should show him up as well.
    I’d even prefer Tian Meyer.
Just hope the idiot doesn’t randomly kick all our possession back to that Lion’s backline, they have the counter attack to murder us.

  • @JD (Comment 54) : I think it really boils down to consistency. And trust me they definitely practise kicking amongst all the backs so they know full well who can do what. So yes Andre can kick further, but he can also miss kick a lot more than Joe so thats probably why they use Joe more. Its probably also the reason you see Etienne Oosthuizen clean rucks more than he carries the ball lately as he has a tendency to lose the ball in contract even though he does get over the advantage line. I think they just going with the percentage options majority of the time

So in the current kick and defense orientated game plan he is a very good fit – just need to think more about where his kicks should go. You want to give the defenders at least some time to get organized before the oppo runs at you again.

  • @JD (Comment 97) : two years of a rugby career + been sent to the wildness + reputation damage is a long time. I’m pretty sure that would normally kill off a player’s career permanently.

Personally I believe in 2nd chances especially when the person in question has shown true remorse and not tried to hide the fact they they made an exceptionally poor descision. I don’t see why kids who look up wouldn’t learn from his mistake.

Judging by the bits and pieces I’ve read on Chilli I’m fairly confident that he’s the type who would happily chat to youngsters and warn them of the dangers of taking steroids. Coming from someone who’s been there and suffered the consequences adds a huge about of credibility for the listeners.

Until there is a credible system, testing everyone, I’ll prefer to view players such as Chilli to be simply one of the unlucky ones.

Steroid use is very widespread and i wouldnt be surprised if many pros are rolling the dice and backing themselves not to get caught. I think my issue is not with Chilliboy the guy himself but more the act and punishment thereof. I just believe that like any other, you wont deter others unless the punishment is severe enough for you not to roll the dice. Ive sat in an u20 club rugby selection meeting and had a players parent come up and ask what steroids his kid should use so that he can compete with the other guys. Not that for me is a massive problem

Both the classification of legal vs illegal performance enhancers and the nightmare of trying to keep ahead with testing appears to be an eventual hiding to nothing. Would I mind? Probably yes, but I also reckon I could eventually make peace with it.

I guess that puts me firmly on the fence about the whole thing. Thankfully I’m not great at predicting the future as Superbru will attest.
