A big round of congratulations to new springbok coach Allister Coetzee, whose appointment was confirmed a few minutes ago.

Former Natal utility back Mzwandile Stick is the new backline coach, with Johann van Graan and Ian Schwartz reprising their roles as forwards coach and manager respectively.

Stick cut his coaching teeth with the EP Kings in recent years, taking their team of no-name under 19 players to an unprecedented tournament win last year.

The Springbok Team Management is:

Head coach: Allister Coetzee
Assistant coach (backline): Mzwandile Stick
Assistant coach (forwards): Johann van Graan
Team manager: Ian Schwartz
Team doctor: Dr Jerome Mampane / Dr Conrad von Hagen (Southern Kings)
Strength and Conditioning coach: Dr Warren Adams
Physiotherapist: Vivian Verwant
Physiotherapist: Tanu Pillay
Logistics manager: JJ Fredericks
Media manager: Rayaan Adriaanse
PR manager: Annelee Murray

Mostly because of Allister Coetzee. I’ll admit I don’t know many of the rest at all.

  • How much specialist coaching will be brought in from the Mobi unit?

I’m thinking of Pieter de Villiers (scrum coach), Jacques Nienaber, and whoever else is contracted to the Mobi unit.

I am encouraged by the fact that the Bok coach won’t be running an HM style dictatorship, as he does not posses absolute power….assuming off course the rumors are true.

He is in a similar situation as JW, BV, BmH and Gold was when arriving at the Sharks, YOU just cannot give a head coach his assistants, He needs to be able to choose his own team, people HE trusts.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 14) : HM surrounded himself with yes-men. As far as I know, his contract stipulated that he had the final say on all things Springbok: the players, his assistants, his management team, his game plan.

I’m hoping to see a more collaborative coaching structure….I’m dreaming of a Bok team being coached for the better of the team, and not influenced by personal behind the scenes battles.

  • All I can think of is how bad the Stormers were to watch under him. That style of rugby will not win trophies or championships. It has been exposed and I don’t see AC being able to take us forward.

The coaching team doesn’t inspire confidence and I feel less and less like watching the Boks the more I listen to this press conference. They all seem to be trying to get the country behind the Boks, like they’re trying to persuade fans. That’s a worrying sign.

‘The results will come sooner or later’ – Fikile Mbalula. That doesn’t inspire me at all

  • One thing worth noting:

In 2007 SA had two teams in the SR final.

NZ regularly have teams in SR finals.

Now England, with their new head coach, has 3teams in the championship play-offs.

Interesting how much influence the national coach has on the franchises, whether directly or indirectly.

Anyway from that moment I was firmly rooting for Pukke.

4 Eben Etzebeth 11 lwazi Mvovo

  • I don’t hold much hope for this mediocre selection of no-names. Guess NZ and Aus are safe at the nr 1 and 2 world rankings. Maybe we can play Argintina and Japan for the middle positions. Oh well thanks SARU. Maybe the restructure should have started with Hoskins and then trickled down to coach.

  • @Poisy (Comment 79) : Actually just remove Habana and add Mapoe, Whitely, Faf, Kriel and Marx to that mix, and you probably have the team of locally based currently available players who are on form.

  • I think AC will do well with the Boks

    - he took the Stormers from alsorans to contenders
    - he isn’t tunnel-visioned about size, selects smaller players if they merit it
    - he has a good media personality
    - his record on transformation is good, and I don’t think anyone can say that the players of colour he selected for the Stormers weren’t there on merit
    - he mentors his assistants well – see Fleck – and sees that as part of his function with his Bok assistants

    What we know so far
    - he will select overseas-based players where needed, at least for this year
    - he will select smaller player where they merit it
    - the 50% target is for 2019, currently it is 35%, and he has four years to develop the Boks squad to achieve that, mainly on merit hopefully

What we don’t know (lots, but anyway)
    - who his captain will be. I’m sure he would like Thor but he will have to convince SARU of using an overseas based captain
    - whether he can coach a team to play 15 man rugby – his record at the Stormers suggest otherwise, they went from contenders to alsorans when he tried it
    - will his team be as Stormers-centric as HM’s was Bulls-centric at the start?

Best wishes to Coetzee and his team

  • @Baylion (Comment 86) : Very thoughtful post. I agree to a large extent. I think the captain could well be Adrian Strauss- well at least this year. No WP side under Coetzee was ever easy to beat…something to think about. There are a lot of exciting players in SA at the moment…a lot of those also make many errors which you cant afford at international level so will be interesting how he balances that. Those wanting the Boks to play 7s rugby and run if from everywhere think again. It will be play for territory and attack in opposition half. Solid set pieces at international level are key.

  • @Baylion (Comment 86) : I agree with pretty much everything you say, but what concerns me is that the coach will have to mentor his assistants, as opposed to being able to be properly supported by them or even being challenged in a healthy manner.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 89) : True, that is the ideal situation although HM also went with unknowns, the problem seems to be that they remained unknowns.

Also keep in mind that the SARU mobi unit with Rassie, Nienaber, de Villiers and Vlok will also be involved and the indications are that the Super Rufby coaches will have more input as well

  • Apparently the Bok captain can be based overseas….not sure if that is a good thing. But it does bring into contention guys like Duane Vermuelen, Bismarck DuPlessis and Francois Louw. I would prefer only local players to be picked. But to cater for all perhaps pick local guys only for the incoming tour, pick only foreign for end of year tour, and try pick your best for rugby championship…but its a tricky task

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 94) : well,if the coaches are honest when asked questions like: did your prop scrum illegally in these games?and gets an honest yes or no,then im all for it.no good saying lets select so-and-so only for them to be found out when playing for the boks.
