Rassie takes Irish option

SA Rugby yesterday confirmed the long-running rumour that GM of the Rugby Department, Johan Erasmus, is set to leave his post. Erasmus has been appointed to the vacant Director of Rugby role at Munster Rugby Football Club in Ireland and will join up with his new team ahead of the 2016/2017 European season.

Rassie has been an important part of the background machinery at SA Rugby over the last four years, working to establish the Rugby Department and to put in place the systems and development blueprints necessary to ensure that South Africa’s veritable conveyor belt of junior talent translates into sustained success at senior level. The first fruits of that work are only now being reaped, with Erasmus’s department having made the recommendation of Allister Coetzee as Springbok coach and also, no doubt, playing a key role in helping the new coach to prepare a team for June’s series against Ireland.

It’s rather ironic that Rassie’s last involvement in South African rugby will be against the very country in which he will live for the next few years.

“I’d like to thank Rassie for the massive contribution he has made in establishing the Rugby Department and ensuring SA Rugby remain leaders on and off the field,” said SA Rugby CEO Jurie Roux in a statement yesterday.

“It will be difficult to replace Rassie, but we’ll make an appointment in due course. The Rugby Department is functioning extremely well with experts at all levels ensuring the department runs smoothly on a daily basis. Hopefully this will not be the end of Rassie’s contribution to rugby in South Africa. He’s done so much, as a player, team manager and coach for various teams in South Africa, and in the last four years at SA Rugby. We’d like to wish him well for his future endeavours.”

  • Hasnt Jurie Roux been discredited within the SARU setup as well, if so then why is he still popping up all over the place.

  • With the sports ministers announcement yesterday and that of the Bok coach previously i just wonder if Rassie is leaving before he feels he will be pushed out. Rather leave now on own terms. Just a thought…

  • What a loss. Wish Morne could comment on this but I suspect he can’t.

  • There are also rumors that Nienaber will also follow. This is going to leave Allistair a bit in the lurch without decent specialist backing for his coaching team.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 6) :

I have no problem just sharing some facts as a lot of stuff is distorted by mainstream media.

Rassie is leaving on his own terms to achieve his personal goals of getting back into coaching and one day coaching a national team. Having been out of that environment for a good 6/7 years he feels he needs to sharpen his hands-on skills before he takes on such a role.

Negotiations like that doesn’t happen in a week, or even a month, the Munster thing has been a while in the making, so the stories that he is leaving because Allister got the gig is utter nonsense. Allister was the top recommended candidate from his department.

The stories of issues with Regan is also nonsense, it is based on conjecture on the time it took to appoint the coach.

Rassie was never available to coach the Boks, he does not feel he is ready for it. The only thing that could have happened is that the Mobi unit (basically guys that coaches the Boks last 4 years with Heyneke) under his leadership would have performed an interim role until the preferred candidate was appointed.

With the age of his kids right now and his personal ambition, Munster is the perfect launching pad to achieve his ultimate ambition of coaching a national side.

    @vanmartin (Comment 17) :

Systems is not the issue, the challenge is to get the right guy in his place to continue the management and development of it. Systems only as good as those who drive it.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 20) :

It is tough for a coach to come into a position like this, just ask Nienaber…

You have to be very strong administratively and be happy to deal with administrative protocol with a horde of associations, councils and presidents.

I think the type of person that will do well in this sort of area will be a guy like John Smit funny enough.

  • @Morné (Comment 9) : I know this is counter-intuitive, but in my opinion, the very fact that Rassie feels he is not yet ready to coach a national team actually makes him my ideal candidate. Clearly he is the kind of introspective person that clearly understands his own strengths, weaknesses, and limitations. I strongly believe a person like Rassie would ensure that he brings in the right assistants to fill the holes where he may be weaker or have limitations. I do understand just how counter-intuitive this is, but my experience in hiring people is the best candidate for almost any job is the person who fully understands one’s own strengths, weaknesses, and limitations. These people seem to make the best employees and the most successful in my experience. Anyway, thanks for the insight and for clearing things up. Maybe you should take over for Rassie?????
