Marius follows Sharks to Buenos Aires

I have good news and bad news, Sharks fans…

The good news is that a familiar, local referee will be in charge when the Sharks take on los Jaguares in Buenos Aires on Saturday night. The bad news is that it’s Marius van der Westhuizen.

The young referee was in charge last week when the Sharks recorded their biggest result of the season, downing the Hurricanes 32-15 at Kings Park. However, it was felt by many fans that the man in the middle didn’t enjoy the best of outings, with several rather questionable decisions made over the course of 80 minutes. In particular, the decision not to yellow card Hurricanes fullback James Marshall for a late shoulder charge on Lwazi Mvovo rankled; Mvovo had kicked on and the ball landed in space in the Canes 22; but for the illegal charge, many felt the ace finisher would have scored a try.

Van der Westhuizen will be assisted by local men Juan Sylvestre and Damian Schneider, with Santiago Borsani filling the TMO hot seat.

  • Of course their won’t be an off-field yellow for the gods of rugby either

Either way, nobody can say we beat the Canes due to a numerical advantage…we beat all 16 of them, fair and square.

  • That was not a serious enough offense for it to bother me that he wasn’t yellow carded. AND OH PLEASE, he would never have scored that try! There were about 4 Hurricanes in front of him, and some of them well in front of him. Just as a side note, Mvovo has hardly justified the title of “ace finisher” this season (in my opinion).

  • Somebody phone Customs and have him detained…or at the very least questioned about his actions or lack thereof last week. So the English/Afrikaans speaking Van Der Westhuizen will have Spanish/Portugese speaking assistants…that should go well….

  • @Apollo (Comment 5) : Whether he would have scored or not does not bother me, I dont see where anyone advocates a penalty try should have been the ourcome, as you infer. What bothers me is that after viewing the incident a few times he only saw a late tackle, he didint see that it was a shoulder charge and he blurted that out on TV “only one of the boxes was ticked and that was a late tackle – the guy did not even see (chose not to see) that it was late and ILLEGAL..

  • @Apollo (Comment 5) : Thats not exactly true – the only player infront of him was the no14 who was turning. The number 15 was behind him as was the hooker who was not close enough to compete. Straight footrace between Mvovo and the fullback – and the fullback took Mvovo out so he was obvious not there

  • Not really sure who to reply to here, but I want to make sure I’m not being misunderstood. I would have given a yellow card. Perhaps the reason it doesn’t bother me is that we were finally playing well and things were going well. To be fair, though, it’s not THAT bad.

  • I would have carded the Kiwi, but I think you guys are a bit overly obsessed with this referee.

If he can be faulted, it is for a bit of over eagerness to let the game flow and to not be the determinant of the result. He would have awarded that early try to the Sharks if the TMO did not call him back for the forward pass and he made a ton of “straight down” calls that most other referees would have seen differently.

  • @fyndraai (Comment 35) : ja must say when a player drops a ball some refs call a knock on regardless if the ball went forward, straight down or even backward. Going to try to watch the game as I missed the Canes game although I think the Sharks play better if I don’t watch the game.
