Michael Horak’s Sharks XV team to take on Free State in a Currie Cup qualifying match in Bloemfontein this weekend has been bolstered by the addition of two Super Rugby players to the tight five; Thomas du Toit and Hyron Andrews will both enjoys starts this week, at tight head prop and lock respectively.

In fact, with loosehead prop Juan Schoeman and lock Dave McDuling both having tasted Super Rugby action this year as well, the Sharks XV will start with a rather experienced unit up front, with only hooker Stephan Coetzee a relative newcomer. Captain Khaya Majola is again paired with Johan du Toit and Retief Marais in a loose trio that is starting to gel nicely through continued selection.

Halfbacks Dylan Marcus and Tristan Tedder retain their places, but Legend Marwana has a new midfield partner in Heimar Williams this week. Neil Maritz and Sipho Mkhize take over as the wings, with Alrin Eksteen retained at fullback.

Francois Kleinhans makes a welcome return to action off the bench this week as well.

Sharks XV: 15. Alrin Eksteen, 14. Neil Maritz, 13. Nkululeko Marwana, 12. Heimar Williams, 11. Sipho Mkhize, 10. Tristan Tedder, 9. Dylan Marcus, 8. Retief Marais, 7. Johan du Toit, 6. Khaya Majola (C), 5. Hyron Andrews, 4. David McDuling, 3. Thomas du Toit, 2. Stephan Coetzee, 1. Juan Schoeman
Subs: 16. Kerron van Vuuren, 17. John-Herbert Meyer, 18. Gerhard Engelbrecht, 19. Tjiuee Uanivi, 20. Francois Kleinhans, 21. Hanco Venter, 22. Sandile Kubeka

  • Looks a good team but i cant help but think the Sharks are a bit thin on quality backline players with only Heimar Williams in that team having tasted any real CC or Super rugby action. And there arent really missing out.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 3) : this is a very young side think most of them can still play junior rugby so let’s hope they take this chance to show that they deserve a spot in the proper Currie cup!

  • @JD (Comment 4) : Yeh it is a young side…majority still qualify for u21s i think. But that just emphasizes my point that the backline depth is rather slim and very untested.

  • Good to see Kleinhans back. I have lots of time for that player. Pity he got injured, this was meant to be the SR where he finally shows us what some of us have suspected for ages. Guess the Sharks are going to have a very serious CC team.

Cant help but feel that perhaps Thomas should have taken the long trip west instead of Coenie

Watched the game. Pack got bullied – especially in the maul. Kleynhans and Schoeman were very good on attack though.

Problem started up front, but the backs were not great, apart from Tedder. If Heimar is really the great midfield hope some seem to believe, then we are seriously fooked.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 19) : Eish that is a worry. That pack had a lot of big names so if they got bullied im worried about our perceived strong depth in that department. Kleinhans has just come back so im not expecting too much just yet. The big concern if Heimar isnt playing well and isnt rated then who else? Esterhuizen and Williams are literally the only 2 inside centres at the Sharks…

Khubeka scored a try, but nothing that I saw from any of the centres excited me, and none of our 10′s are physical enough to move one out.

Lambie and PJ are probably covering 12 now, and I think any real long term back up will have to be recruited.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 21) : That is quite concerning. We are lucky Esterhuizen has held up as if he and Jordaan got injured the Sharks season could unfold quickly. Perhaps they need to have a look at the club scene a bit…

  • @Big Fish (Comment 19) : must say I have not seen much of Heimar this year so personally my call for his inclusion into the Super rugby team is on what I know and seen of him last year. What I’ve read of his form/performances in recent times is worrying as there’s no other 12 (except Pat) at the Sharks.

I believe that Hanco Venter played at 9 – at least part of the game. Either way, service wasnt bad, but nothing spectacular. I will say that some of the best passages of play were when we put together 10+ phases – and that means that the 9 was at least quick to the ball and found his runners.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 24) : @Big Fish (Comment 25) : think one of the best ruck clearing and passing displays of all the Sharks 9′s this weekend was probably Joe’s little cameo against the Jaguars. Think one of the reasons he cleared the balls so quickly was because as a 10 he knows how shit it is when the 9 is so slow!

I thought he did well – but some guys are hyping those few minutes.

Ungerer has copped a bit of flack from me of late, but he was really good on Saturday. Some of his up and unders were a bit long, but everything else was top notch.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 27) : Ungerer was definitely better…he kinda reminds me of JPP in that the more he plays the better he gets. He is one of those players that needs to play to stay match fit. I dont think Joe’s cameo is hyped up that much considering he is not a 9 and did an outstanding job in closing the game out. Not sure why Ungerer was subbed though? Injury or fatigue im not sure but was a risky move.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 27) : I was impressed by the number of his up-and-unders that landed just outside the Jags 22, thus blocking the mark….we just didn’t have anybody chasing hard (probably due to energy preservation after all the travel).

  • @JD (Comment 26) : I saw it differently. I thought Joe’s passing was hopelessly inadequate at 9 (not his fault – he’s never played there). You cannot throw long looping balls to the 10.

Stefan’s long low bullets were beautiful though.

I didn’t think Ungerer was always in position quickly enough, but his passing was super accurate.

    Also, Stefan’s tackling wasn’t wonderful.

  • Eish i watched the replay of the Sharks CC side vs Free State last night…wow we are bad. We look like a phone in club side playing against a semi professional outfit. We were so disorganised and our players barring Kleinhans and one or 2 others look like they are tiny school boys and get thrown around like rag dollls. Bit of a worrying sight in terms of our depth.
