Lambie to lead Sharks in Buenos Aires

Pat Lambie has been named as starting flyhalf and captain of the sharks team that will face los Jaguares in the Argentine capital on Saturday night.

Lambie takes over from Garth April in the number 10 jersey, with the latter perhaps unlucky to be benched after a fine outing against the Hurricanes last week. Lwazi Mvovo has been given a week off after a ehavy workload in recent weeks, so Odwa Ndungane starts at right wing, with JP Pietersen switching to the left in the only other changes to the back line that will start the match.

Jean-Luc du Preez has not made the trip due to an injury and his place in the starting side will thus go to Jean Deysel, in his first run-on appearance of the season. Giant Mtayanda also starts for the first time, with Etienne Oosthuizen enjoying something of a rest off the bench this week. Coenie Oosthuizen replaces Lourens Adriaanse at tight head prop in the final change to the fifteen.

Ter Mtembu makes a welcome return to Super Rugby action, named on the bench in the number 20 jersey. Kyle Cooper and Chiliboy Ralepelle have been bracketed in 16, as have Joe Pietersen and S’bura Sithole in 23. A decision will doubtless be made as to which of these will play after today’s captain’s run.

Sharks: 15. Willie le Roux, 14. Odwa Ndungane, 13. Paul Jordaan, 12. Andre Esterhuizen, 11. JP Pietersen, 10. Pat Lambie (Captain), 9. Michael Claassens, 8. Daniel du Preez, 7. Jean Deysel, 6. Keegan Daniel, 5. Stephan Lewies, 4. Lubabalo Mtyanda, 3. Coenie Oosthuizen, 2. Franco Marais, 1. Tendai Mtawarira
Replacements: 16. Chiliboy Ralepelle/Kyle Cooper, 17. Dale Chadwick, 18. Lourens Adriaanse, 19. Etienne Oosthuizen, 20. Tera Mtembu, 21. Stefan Ungerer, 22. Garth April, 23. S’bura Sithole/Joe Pietersen

  • Let’s just hope Coenie managed to sort his scrummaging out. Other than that, a pretty decent line-up.

  • My concerns with this lineup. 1. Whether our back 3 can handle the sheer pace of the Jaguares back 3. 2. Whether our pretty new front 5 combo can win their first phase ball at scrums and lineouts. But overall there good players in that side, and a strong bench

  • I see a lot of people on social media calling for April to start. He did a superb job in Pat’s absence no doubt, but to suggest that GG start him ahead of a fully fit Springbok (not to mention our captain) is taking it a bit far. Come now. Pat was always going to start as soon as GG felt he was ready, as he now clearly does. April will get his chance. He has a bright future ahead of him. But right now, it’s Pat’s time.

  • Looking forward to Tera getting on the field again. I hope he can play the type of game that will really link the forwards and the backline. Nothing against Joe, but hope they Sithole. We have enough cover for 15 and 10, but we can do with a bit of extra pace as impact from the bench!

  • @Another Nick (Comment 4) : Couldn’t agree more. Not surprised by this at all. He was always going to be the first choice flyhalf for us when fit and ready.

Bit worried about Coenie starting, but don’t mind the other changes, good to see some hard workers (such as Etta and Mvovo) getting a bit of a rest as well.

Saturday’s going to be a late night indeed.

On the Jaguares scrum, it hasn’t been anything as scary as their test side even though it mainly made up of them. Didn’t pay a whole lot of attention to their game against sunwolves but I remember thinking that they weren’t exactly dominating that area.

Everyone seem to now be able to make the necessary step up to what is expected from them in the run-on team – credit to Gold for creating a strong squad.

Yes April has shaped nicely but after a rocky start. Pat has proven himself many many times and as the new kid on the block you must be humble and stand back for the seasoned vet.

  • Bit pissed off at this line up,we come off the best game we have had in years and first thing Gold does is seriously tamper with the entire team.
Coenie is a lemon, and he should be playing in the Currie Cup team not Thomas, this guy has had his arse handed to him by every team he has played this year, and Gold chooses to start him against one of the best scrums in the competition.
We played so well with three strong mobile quick loose forwards, and Gold choose the slow lumbering Dessel who hasn’t had a good game for two years
We have benefitted from the aggression of two hard men at lock in Oosthuizen and Lewies and Gold goes for Mytanda a docile lamb against those Argie locks.
Then oldman Odwa what is it with this guy,he has had his day there are much better players.

So according to you the solution to our burn out problems to leave these three fresh underplayed potential winners out and replace them with the fresh legs of the walking scrum penalty Coenie, the limping yellow card Deysel, and the evergreen spring chicken Odwa.

He is far too good an asset to be badly managed, probably the brightest prospect we have had at prop in this country since a young 1995 era Os du Randt, and anyways I would pick a 50% fit Thomas against a fully fit Connie anyway.

What I do know is that Argentinian sides usual have a very good scrum and at home they’re a totally different side.
My opinion is that they tested Thomas last week (at home) to see how he play. As he’s still young and adapting to tight head they decided to leave him at home (to get game time) and not risk him against tough opposition but like I said that’s just what I think.
As for Coenie I would have started Adriaanse and let Coenie play the last 20 min but let’s see how he goes.

  • @The hound (Comment 71) : My reasoning behind my comment is that if he is fully fit then why has he not played any decent amount of time…not even for a club side or the CC side? I know as you say its a risk to play a semi fit guy off the bench but i think they reckoned he could manage if required. He does seem to be carrying more weight than last year and those minutes he has played he hasnt carried the ball as much as he did last year etc. So just based on that i dont think all i 100%…as i said i hope im wrong

  • @coolfusion (Comment 78) : Not exactly sure how long Coenie’ contract is…perhaps 2-3yrs. and yeh Coenie was bought as the no.1 tighthead so thats why he is getting lots of gametime. Thomas has done extremely well in the past so surprised to not see him play…even as a loosehead. I see he is at tighthead for the CC side though.

  • Feel for April. Yes Pat is a Bok and all that, but to me, April has been the biggest influence in the change in the Sharks pattern of play. He has attacked the gain line brilliantly and made the Sharks a far more formidable force with ball in hand. Must be a bit disheartening knowing you have played so well, but will now be benching, probably for the remainder of the campaign. I would have preferred that April start here and make Pat fight for the jersey, as opposed to it being given back to him.

Slightly worried about the tight five in this game, but I feel the Sharks have turned a corner and I am expecting us to beat these guys.

  • @Vonno13 (Comment 88) : Interesting perspective. What would Pat then need to do to get the jersey back? Have 1 good game, 2? I dont think he make a single error in the time he was on the field last Saturday….so not saying that cameo is winning back the jersey but more than he justified why it was his jersey that was on loan all along. So yeh it is tough for April…especially when playing behind the captain…just ask Bismark and Kyle Cooper

  • @SheldonK (Comment 89) : For me, by the time Lambie got on last week, the game was already ours.

Ja, look, I feel he should prove himself for 3 or so games – April has been sublime and for him to be dropped to the bench, albeit to a Bok and Captain, is not right in my opinion. I would prefer Lambie to play himself back into the side as opposed to being given the jersey.

I am not in anyway having a go at Lambie, I just think April was on the bench all season, got a chance to play and changed the fortunes of the Sharks. Would like a bit more faith shown in him

  • @SheldonK (Comment 89) : @Vonno13 (Comment 91) : Pat has more experience and played in Argentina before and by all account he had a good game (even if the game was already won) so that’s why I think GG picked him to start.

  • @Vonno13 (Comment 91) : I think if it wasnt for the Bok games coming up so quickly i have a feeling Pat would have been eased back in over the next couple weeks. I do have a feeling that Gold got a sneaky call from AC asking him to play Pat t see if he is fully recovered. think its same reason Janjies is playing on Sat when he probably should play off the bench. At the end of the day Pat was always going to reclaim the 10 jersey as he only lost it due to injury not form and well he is the captain. Its tough on April but thats life im afraid…the unproven guys must take the little chances they get so that when the no.1 goes down they are undoubtedly no.2. I think the injury to Radebe early on allowed Garth to have a run…

See, on this site we have fans that idolise certain players regardless of what facts you may bring or whether the team will benefit. Lambie is one of those players and justifiably so as he has done so much for the union and deserves the benefit of doubt….even in cases where one knows that a certain player deserves the spot based on current form. Even I wouldn’t even think about posting what you posted. That privilege I leave for Lambie and Marcel. Any other player that based on my assessment is not adding value…i will have his ass for breakfast, lunch and supper.
