Concern over du Preez’s groin

The Sharks, who now face a decent 6-week break before super Rugby resumes in July, came through Saturday’s romp against the Kings pretty much unscathed, apart from one rather worrying injury concern.

Number 8 Daniel du Preez went off relatively early on with a groin injury and while a full prognosis is yet to be announced, Gary Gold’s assessment at the press conference immediately after the game was not rosy. There are fears that the young loose forward may have suffered a serious tear, one that may require surgery and will thus all but certainly rule him out for the remainder of the campaign.

Don’t expect any major announcements, since the Sharks will, I’m sure, do whatever they can over the next six weeks to get him up and running again, but please do keep young Daniel in your thoughts and prayers in the hope that his injury is less serious than currently suspected.

The silver lining her is the encouraging form shown by Tera Mtembu as a replacement, as well as the return of another player in great form, Philip van der Walt, ahead of the next game, a tricky away encounter at Ellis Park on 2 July.

  • Hope Dan’s injury is not as bad as it seems but it is encouraging to see such great depth in his replacements. He’s got 6 weeks to rest with no need to be rushed back.

  • Shame! there was probably a reasonable chance of getting a call from AC

  • Hope he gets better soon. We have Phillip and Tera as more than capable replacements.

  • Man, not the best news to hear the same week we lose Jacques Potgieter. On the upside, great to see Tera Mtembu in fine form this weekend after his own horror run with injury.

  • He is a young guy with many many more games to play…must not rush his rehab.
I must admit i did enjoy Van Der Walt on the side of the scrum in the game he played there and Terra should good touches at 8 on Saturday.

  • And he was coming right very nicely next to keegan. I would have liked to see that partnership grow a little more. Keegan pace forces his mates to aquire better handling and make quicker decisions. Which was good for him.
