Sharks XV to face EP Kings

A strong Cell C Sharks XV team has been named to travel to Port Elizabeth for their Currie Cup Qualifying match against the EP Kings at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday evening (7pm kick-off).

A number of players with Vodacom Super Rugby experience have been included in the matchday 22 by coach Michael Horak, players who have proved themselves at a higher level but in need of game time and certain to add value in this crucial match.

Heimar Williams is one who has a number of Super Rugby caps on his belt and the intelligent player has been moved from centre – his regular starting position – to flyhalf and he will call on the experience of S’bura Sithole and Wandile Mjekevu in the backline.

Similarly, captain Khaya Majola will no doubt lean on the leadership skills of Cell C Sharks 2014 Currie Cup captain Tera Mtembu and Test capped hooker Chilliboy Ralepelle. Francois Kleinhans, another player with plenty of experience will provide cover off the bench.

The Cell C Sharks XV have the same number of points, but have two games in hand over the EP Kings and this is a match they know they have to not only perform well in, but secure the win that could elevate them a couple of places up the log.

Cell C Sharks XV:
15 Alrin Eksteen 14 Wandile Mjekevu 13 S’bura Sithole 12 Nkululeko Marwana 11 Marcel Coetzee 10 Heimar Williams 9 Hanco Venter 8 Tera Mtembu 7 Christiaan de Bruin 6 Khaya Majola (C) 5 Hyron Andrews 4 Ruan Botha 3 Gerhardus Engelbrecht 2 Chilliboy Ralepelle 1 Juan Schoeman

Replacements:
16 Stephan Coetzee 17 Mzamo Majola 18 Ruan Kramer 19 Wian Vosloo 20 Francios Kleinhans 21 Dylan Marcus 22 Kelvin Elder

  • Good tight 5 that. Interesting backline setup and will be interested to see if they gel. Not the strongest bench though. And no recognised goal kicker.

  • Just a question why was Bosch or Tedder not tried for 10? Surely one of them would do a better job than a man out of his settled position?

  • Interesting side, and will be interesting to see how quickly they can gel noting a number of changes which cant be easy.

Of particular interest is Sbu at centre, he has been at wing for most of the season and of course Heimar at 10, but would imagine this is forced due to the unavailability of the yourng 10′s coming through.

Nice to see Botha, Tera and Chilliboy getting some more game time and hopefully they have the impact they should.

  • “this is a match they know they have to not only perform well in, but secure the win that could elevate them a couple of places up the log.”

I agree with the first part, get the win, get confidence, give returning players much needed game time, but as for elevating us up the log,who cares? This ‘competition’ is stupid in that we are guaranteed to get through to the next round and, just like in the Drew Carry Show, the points don’t matter as, unless I’m mistaken, no points from this round are carried through.

Maybe it’s just me, but I find this less interesting than Vodacom Cup.

Ok, now that I’ve come across seeming negative, I am happy to see S’bura at 13 and Heimar at 10. I think Heimar is very underrated.

@SheldonK (Comment 10) : It would be a major blow to lose Tedder. He’s been impressive.

  • @StevieS (Comment 14) : He has done very well for his slight frame. His move seemed pretty finalised by what i read on the Kearsney page but i cant find any other mention of it now so perhaps it has fallen through. If he is staying im not sure why he isnt playing? Unless also injured like Radebe.

  • I like Alrin Eksteen at 15, his big but not too big, fast, and has a strong boot. look forward to seeing him come through the system (hopefully:cause as we see with any promising young player that there are many variables, not least of which are injuries)

Dylan Marcus has also impressed me, iv read people say here that his from a durban club team, how old is he

Is this game being broad cast on dstv ?

Nice to see wandile back, he will probibly go back to king for the last three games of SR if they need him orstay if we need him

    Exciting backline this is

  • @revolverocelot (Comment 19) : I agree about Eksteen, would love to see him get a bit of a look in. But i fear he could go the same route as a Jaco Van Tonder and always be on the fringes. Dylan Marcus is a Collegians player i think, still fairly young, think he was u21 a year ago.

  • It’s not all doom and gloom. This Sharks team has lots of potential but needs to be consistent as they make silly mistakes that kept the Kings in the game. That said they did some really nice things with patches of good handling and line breaks that put huge pressure on the Kings and scoring 5 tries was awesome!

  • @JD (Comment 109) : I agree. I also watched the game and we seem to have a lot of quality in that side. There were some sloppy moments but I think there are a lot more positives to take out of the game than negatives. Was surprised that HW played FH. Didn’t know he could play there. Our tight 5 was good, line-outs especially and Terra and Khaya had reasonably good games, so did Ruan Botha. He showed a lot of strength to go over for that try.

  • Overall i wasnt very impressed, was a sloppy error ridden performance. Some guys did well though…chilliboy, botha, tera, mjekevu, venter and eksteen. Sithole looked like a lost fart out there. And lack of a goal kicker would have cost the sharks in a closer game.

  • The ratio of experience to raw talent is what makes any team good. Problem is that experienced players are becoming the rarest of commodities especially experienced players willing to participate in junior teams and leagues.

  • Having a couple days to think about this game i was very impressed with Hanco Venter ( in my view he should be ahead of Ungerer). Mjekevu was also very good with a high work rate. Ruan Botha did well in the first half but faded in the 2nd possibly a fitness thing as just back from injury. Tera Mthembu did a lot of good things and his linking play from 8 was very good. Williams should have been at 12 not 10. Very unimpressed with Sithole…thought he was the worst back in the side. Eksteen did a lot well and his positioning and support play is very good, i can see him running a lot of the lines Willie LeRoux used to run. Overall there just seemed to be something lacking, no fluidity, and perhaps thats because it is a thrown together side each week.
