Free State forward Teboho Mohoje has been confirmed as captain of the South Africa “A” side that will take on the visiting England Saxons in a two match series. The first match takes place on Friday night in Bloemfontein.

Another Free Stater, centre Francois Venter, will serve as vice captain. Meanwhile, coach Johan Ackermann has confirmed the call-up of two additional players to the squad, in the form of blue Bulls pair Arno Botha (loose forward) and Jason Jenkins (lock). Botha will cover for Nizaam Carr, who is apparently carrying an injury, while Jenkins will further bolster a second row that contains only Stephan Lewies, RG Snyman and JD Schickerling at present.

Four additional players will be released from the Springbok squad after tomorrow’s practice and play with the A side this weekend, before rejoining the Boks after Saturday’s first test against Ireland.

  • Whew!! For a while this morning it seemed like Leeroy may have been called up instead of Lewies. Wording in some sports articles were misleading!

  • Its great that there is an SA A side getting international exposure. can only benefit our guys. Whether the team put out will in fact be the next best is up for debate. But the fixture is at least a start and a lot of the guys there are good players.

  • So BV watched some of the Boks training and made an interesting observation. All the Lions players appear to be coached to look for space with and without the ball. Hope JA can coach some of that into the non-Lions A side guys.

  • @The hound (Comment 12) : I think the loose trio is very possible…dont know if it will be more many games but very possibly for 1. The locks barring injury are the best 2. Front row is where i have my doubt especially at hooker and loosehead. Barring Kolisi and Scarra the rest are very good players and quite possibly could be the best in those positions. Cant see them all moving back to WP though

  • I’ve heard Goosen is playing great rugby but not seen him play so can’t comment. But where I’d like to go with this is I hate to see young guys who are yet to debut or only have a handful of caps get called up to the Boks after they have left for Europe/Japan. If he is being overlooked by his union or has little hope of being selected for the Boks fair enough but for example Goosen was being talked up as the next Bok flyhalf, he was getting his chance, he was backed by the coach. His leaving to me makes it look like he doesn’t care about playing for the Boks. I know the it’s a professional sport argument comes into play here but I still feel some kind of loyalty needs to be shown. Even in the business world loyalty to your company is still appreciated if not awarded.

I’m not attacking Goosen just using him as an example. Kitshoff is another, Koch has just joined that group, Jandre Kruger, Wiehan Herbst to a lesser extent. I’d like to see youngsters ply their trade at home for a bit before leaving to bank big money. This was a little off topic but on those grounds I’d select April over Goosen. A line needs to be drawn in the sand. This is where I’d start.

  • I think you should realize that the Bok jersey do not carry that much weight with the players anymore. They have many alternative options now. As a spectator you need to ask yourself if you want the Bok team to be the best possible team of South African players or will you be satisfied with something less?

  • @fyndraai (Comment 40) : Fair comment. My question would be why does “the Bok Jersey not carry that much weight with the players anymore”? Is it just the money?

With regard to choosing the best possible team, I’m not saying no overseas players should be selected but rather a young guy leaving for a big payday even though he is being given opportunities at this union and at the Boks should be forced to stay otherwise he doesn’t get selected. I’d like to see a sanction imposed similar to that of the Aussies, you need to have played X tests before you can be an overseas based player and be eligible for National selection.

If we keep letting guys leave and still selecting them we’re going to land up with a situation where we can’t select players because their clubs won’t release them as we saw at the end of 2014 (a game we lost) and for example this year we lost a weeks preparation with the European based players. If we were playing the All Blacks we’d be a week behind them preparation wise, that’s never going to end well. We complain that our rugby is behind so many other unions but that’s because we let our best leave without them giving up anything. NZ, Aus, Eng and even Arg all keep their core teams at home and some all of their team.

  • @Hulk (Comment 42) : You definitely put forward good points. I think the current value of the rand as well as the knowledge that a rugby career is a short one has prompted the players to take taking up these lucrative contracts overseas. And i really cant blame them for looking after themselves and their families as any one of us would do the same. It does make things trickier for the Boks in terms of preparation etc. So your idea of overseas players needing to have played X amount of tests is a fairly good one. The problem with that is i can see a lot of quality youngsters then being offered contracts and in time turning out for their adopted nations. So quite a tricky one to manage

  • @SheldonK (Comment 43) : This is definitely a double edged sword but at the moment I think we’re losing on both sides. I also think we’ll keep a fair amount of young talent if we impose a sanction. It may not work but I’m inclined to try something opposed to let the situation continue as it is.

  • @Hulk (Comment 42) : Its a two edged sword, ultimately we all want the same thing to watch the best rugby players in the world playing each other. and that used to be simple each country picked its best team to represent that country. The players played for national pride, the honour of the nation and the hopes of their people.,and a blazer with a badge on it.Nations played a test series once a year, going on and hosting two to three month tours in alternate years.
Then someone realized that there was money to be made out of bringing the best teams together even four years for a World event. It was at the third one of these that the players realised that the huge money being made at their expense should belong to them.
Profesional rugby was born and the blazer faded into the background eclipsed by the cheque book. But with the money came other things,no longer content to play every four years the game escalated to the current levels where the same players are now playing for two different clubs two countries and a national side all in the same calendar year. The season is 10 months long, and guys like JPP have been at this solidly for 5 years.
So we get to the point I was going to make where are you going to see the best rugby as a spectator, and where do you want to play that rugby as a player.
Surprisingly they are not the same thing

  • @SheldonK (Comment 47) : Well it seems Coetzee is doing something, even if something doesn’t make a whole lot of sense regarding eligibility.

@The hound (Comment 45) : You mentioned pride in the blazer, I think SA needs to find a way to bring that back. New Zealand have it and can’t say I ever noticed they lose it, so it is possible even in the professional rugby world. If New Zealand can keep players like McCaw, Carter, Nonu, Conrad Smith, Jane, Dagg, Reid etc. and I’m sure they were being hunted for a lot more than NZRU can afford we should too. I realise that the Rand isn’t the NZ $ but we must be able to keep more young talent in this country. It’s not like these players are only earning R10 000 a month. They are earning big money for this country and can afford good lives here. As you said a few days ago surely some of these guys feel their roots in their homeland and it’s not all about money. I lived in the UK for 6 years earning way more than I currently do in SA but came back because money isn’t everything. Surely the same applies to some of these players.
