The Sharks XV relied on their big guns to pull off an important win against the plucky EP Kings in Port Elizabeth on Friday night, with some familiar names on the score sheet in a 5-try-to-2 victory. While the visiting team may have dominated matters in terms of tries scored, the reality of the game was somewhat different, with poor discipline from Khaya Majola’s team keeping EP in the hunt in a game that ended 26-34.

EP flyhalf Garrick Mattheus proved a thorn in the flesh for the Sharks XV, scoring all but five of his side’s points. While Khaya Majola and Ruan Botha scored first half tries, it was the home side who took a slender 16-15 lead into the break. Sharks wing Marcel Coetzee (no relation) had missed an early penalty, with Mattheus scoring his side’s try, along with a conversion and two penalties of his own to cap off a good half.

Mattheus stretched the lead with another penalty early in the second period, but the Sharks finally got the leg-up they needed when Heimar Williams scored in the 46th minute. Alrin Eksteen then got onto the scoreboard (with Coetzee converting) to finally give his team a bit of a buffer, but a try to Kings scrumhalf Franswa Ueckermann brought them close again.

It took a late score from another Super Rugby player, Wandile Mjekevu, to finally seal the result on a scrappy night that the Sharks XV will probably not want to relieve. Still, 5 points in the bag is just what they needed and that’s what they got.

EP Kings (26): Tries Garrick Mattheus, Franswa Ueckermann. Conversions Mattheus (2). Penalties Mattheus (4).
Sharks XV (34): Tries Khaya Majola, Ruan Botha, Heimar Williams, Alrin Eksteen, Wandile Mjekevu. Conversions Marcel Coetzee (2). Penalty Coetzee.

  • Im surprised the Sharks didnt give Jacques Engelbrecht more of a chance. The Sharks XV guys really struggled to contain him and he is the kind of player our team seems to be lacking. We seem a very timid team…no aggression

  • @SheldonK (Comment 3) : Timid or perhaps they’re wary of injuries before the start of the CC proper?

  • @vanmartin (Comment 4) : If you hold back in a game you definitely more likely to get injured. The team just lacked any fire or aggression. There were a couple decent performances but overall against a very average Kings side…i wouldnt be too thrilled if i was sharks management.

  • Just on the young Sharks etc. if anyone can watch the DHS scrumhalf play…he is in the KZN craven week side. Quality player with all the skills and makes his tackles too. He is only Grade 11 but sharks need to get that contract written up should he wish to pursue a rugby career

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) : Sanele Nohamba. Small black guy…great step and speed and a great pass. Can also operate at 10 and does the goal kicking.

  • Ja must say after thinking a lot about it I still have mixed feelings about the game.
Some good moments of rugby by the Sharks XV was ultimately stopped by to many errors!
For me the best part of the game must be the line outs and Chili, Botha and Andrews must be commended on the best line out work I saw from a Sharks team in a couple of years!
