Still no Pat

In a development that is likely to cause some consternation for fans, it appears that Pat Lambie will once again not be cleared to play for the Sharks this weekend. Lambie is still not completely clear of concussion symptoms after being knocked out cold during the Springboks’ first test against Ireland nearly six weeks ago.

While it’s hardly a trains smash for Gary Gold to make do without Lambie this week – one would fancy that Garth April is supremely capable of masterminding a win against the Sunwolves – next week’s potential quarter-final is a much more serious affair and assuming Lambie is cleared to play in that game, he’d be coming in completely cold.

The Sharks will announce their team for Friday’s clash later this morning. Gold has further revealed that Beast Mtawarira is to be rested, making Keegan Daniel the ost likely captaincy candidate.

  • Eish man – i feel for Pat – hope he recovers completely – in my opinion – it is the right call – something like this could be career ending if trying to be rushed. Good luck mate!

    Dont want Pat with any long term issues

  • Seriously worried about Pat. I wouldn’t be surprised if his family is pushing him to stop playing rugby completely. I know that if he was my son I’d try and convince him to rather join the family business. You don’t stuff around with brain injuries.

  • It is quite concerning that he is still showing symptoms but from what i can understand his condition has improved over the 4 weeks but the improvement hasnt been rapid enough for him to start training and playing. So hoping for faster improvement in the next couple weeks. Will be interesting to see the team’s mindset and motivation with Daniel as captain…

  • I remember a few years ago when the Proteas were playing Pakistan Graeme Smith got hit on the head and seemed fine, only to be ruled out for a number of weeks later. The explanation was that concussion symptoms can start late and continue for a long time after. So I’m sure Lambie still being out is more a precautionary measure than he is seriously damaged. I can’t recall him being ruled out on concussion in the past, will this be his first concussion based layoff?

  • We’d be well advised to make peace with Lambie not playing for the Sharks again this season.

    April to start the remainder of SR games, and I assume Bosch will be his backup….who’d be better, Innie or Bosch?

  • Very worrying indeed. And as much as we need him in top shape for the playoffs, it would be foolish of GG to risk his health by starting him.
    @FireTheLooser (Comment 7) : Probably Bosch. Since he is already part of the set-up now. And isn’t Inny injured in any case?

    That said, we should really push to assert ourselves early in the game – play for the win and then play it safe.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 23) : The Sharks is a union with a very proud history, we should always play for the win, there are no excuses in any match, we are not striving for mediocre performances especially against a club with no SR history whatsoever. We should use this as an exercise for the playoffs, try and sort out our game balance between attack, defense and tactical kicking. I’m not saying we should throw caution to the wind though, but a win really is nonnegotiable.

    @Quintin (Comment 27) :
    Absolutely – we need the win in order to secure our play off spot. But we should try to accumulate a sizeable lead early and then play boring, territorial rugby. It’s not exciting, but given our injury concerns, it’s wise.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 29) : I don’t agree with playing boring territorial rugby once we have a sizable lead. We have to use that time to test ourselves with finishing off our opponents. If we gain a sizable lead in the play-offs and hope that if we stay in the opponents half that we can hold on to a win, that will be our demise. Any of the NZ teams and the Lions can score pretty much from anywhere, we have to put the result beyond reasonable doubt if we have the lead and not go lying down. I understand that tactic of winding the clock down and playing in the right area of the field, I just feel this year if we are going to have to finish our opponents off because of their attacking threat.
