To Wellington we go!

The Super Rugby quarter-final lineup has been confirmed and the Sharks, as 8th-seeded qualifiers, have the dubious luxury of playing unlikely log-topper, the Hurricanes, in Wellington on Saturday morning.

There was a lot of movement across the conferences over the weekend, with only the Lions and Stormers sure of their conference-topping credentials going into the round. The big moves took place in New Zealand, with the Canes recording a surprising win over the Crusaders – and the Highlanders doing the same to the Chiefs. That meant that last year’s finalists gobbled up the top two positions on that most congested of conference logs, with the Saders and Chiefs, who had set the pace most of the way through, resigned to third and fourth spot respectively.

The Waratahs were pipped at the post by the Brumbies, with the latter recording an uninspiring win over the lowly force to book their spot as the only Australian qualifier. The Lions’ questionable decision to send an under strength team to Argentina appears to have backfired, as they lost first place on the combined log (along with the match) and will now face kiwi opposition in their quarterfinal, rather than the Sharks.

While some of the ordering of the final positions is a little wacky – due to the conference system – organisers will take comfort in the fact that the eight teams with the most log points overall are the ones going through to the next phase.

As mentioned, the top-seeded Hurricanes play the Sharks in Wellington. The Lions, who came second face the seventh-seeded Crusaders in Johannesburg. Third place went to the Stormers and they face the Chiefs at Newlands, while the Brumbies will need to find a way to deal with the Highlanders in the remaining quarter-final. South Island fans will be somewhat aggrieved that this match takes place in Canberra, given that the Landers accumulated nine more log points than their Australian hosts.

Our focus, as always, remains on the Sharks and apart from carrying our own hopes (as always), they carry the Lions’ hopes too, in some way. In order for Johan Ackermann’s team to progress to a home final, they’ll need the Sharks to do them a favour by beating the Hurricanes this weekend. Giving the Durbanites confidence will be their fine win against these foes earlier in the season. The Lions, though, need to find a way to beat a Crusaders outfit that had their measure when they met during the round-robin phase.

Maybe a bench spot. But seems he wont be able to play as he wasnt on the squad list at start of the season.

  • @Henkb (Comment 18) : tricky one.

So here’s the thing. SANZAAR don’t care about the strength of your team – only that you can field one. So as long as the Sharks have Garth April fit, there is absolutely no justification for needing Lambie. Likewise, with Willie and Odwa fit, they have enough qualified players that they cannot justify “needing” Smith or Bosch.

Thankfully, it seems our injured players are returning to action in the nick of time – but this could have been a blunder of epic proportions.

His situation is no different both were not on the original 40 man squad, both were in the country before April 1, and both have been in less than 4 game day squads. So if we get an injury replacement why can’t we pick who it is, either Lambie or Bosch. This whole thing is just ridiculous. sorry……

  • @robdylan (Comment 45) : Furthermore, if SANZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR’s only requirement is the ability to field a team, how can they expect any team to travel with only one flyhalf. What if something were to happen to April like Claasens in Arg? Then all of a sudden the Sharks are in NZ without a flyhalf to play in the QFs. Surely a team should be able to include two flyhalfs in their match day squad and certainly the touring squad. It seems to me that is a critical injury replacement for Joe Pietersen, in which case, why can this not be Lambie?????

  • When I look at the players available to go to NZ I see only one that has ever played flyhalf at this level (or any professional level for that matter). How in the world can a union be expected to travel to a QF with only one flyhalf. Clearly we have cover at 15 if needed with both Odders and Mvovo having played there in the past couple of years, but we have zero flyhalf cover (nor specialized goalkicker either). When Joe Pietersen was injured, it left a gaping hole that has to be filled. Surely we should be allowed to bring in an injury replacement for Joe, and if that is the case, why is Lambie not eligible to be said injury replacement, but Bosch is? I really want to see the rule that makes that happen, must be some pretty special legaleze there.

  • @robdylan (Comment 43) : Why dispensation for Botha and not Lambie, are their situations not the same? In fact I would argue Lambie is needed far more as we have no cover for 10 other than April. We have multiple players in the squad who have played lock in SuperRugby, Lewies, Oosthuizen, Andrews, and Deysel all come to mind. Surely there is a far stronger argument for the inclusion of Lambie (or even Bosch) than Botha? This is so convoluted. What is the point if a 4 match rule for players who have been contracted to a union all season and have not played for any other union or club? I understand if you bring a player in from elsewhere, they need to be in at least 4 squads, but surely a player contracted to the union all season should be eligible.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 62) : my thoughts exactly, in order for the comp to grow, gain more spectators, TV audiences ext. surely as you stated all teams in the play offs should be able to play with the strongest team available, there must be mitigating factors such as Lambie and Botha and Bosch, Lambie and Botha was part of our initial squad even for the warm up games, Lambie has been part of the Sharks set up for several years now, Botha and Bosch are players that were bought by the union and not players just drafted in for the love of it

I do understand also that they trying to rule out what the streamers did, but surely they can control this also, for instance if the canes want to draft in Nonu for the play offs they can decline that as he is contracted to Toulon now and not the canes anymore, but lets say the Lions need a player for lock and they can get a guy from the pumas which is part of their SR setup surely this can be accepted  :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

  • @fyndraai (Comment 67) : why? A case of concussion lasted longer than anybody expected otherwise this wouldn’t have been an issue. At fly half, April has got decent game time, particularly in the second half of the season – there’s no real back up to him in the squad because Pietersen (the original no2) is injured and Tedder has left. So what was Gold supposed to do to magically improve some awful luck? At full back, Le Roux should be back no? Smith I understand can’t play in th knock outs but was felt to be the best option for games the team had to win Again, I don’t really understand what Gold was supposed to do – he needed to win those games. From last year’s side, 2x du Plessis, Alberts, Steyn and for most the season, Lambie, Coetzee, Reinach, Pietersen, Botha (and Potgeiter before he left) have been out. Let’s get behind the side and say that qualifying this year is actually a pretty decent achievement.

Haven’t got the curiosity to see whether the other teams spotted this and included injured players in their fit squad list but if the Sharks are the only one that did this, I’m really surprised.

  • @JR (Comment 70) : actually the sharks did this correct as bot players was injured at the time, Rob Du Preez was not injured at the time so he was included on the original team sheet of the streamers, so I’m also not sure how GG should have included both Lambie and Botha on the team sheet, according to me we followed protocol, albeit it is now biting us in the ass

  • @Henkb (Comment 71) : sorry, mine is unclear, agree that for me, the Sharks simply did the correct thing, I doubt how many other sides did anything different – though I haven’t checked – so the Sharks have just been unlucky. its not fun but it happens.

  • @JR (Comment 72) : No I got what you were trying to say, I was just reiterating the statement you made as I also feel the the Sharks were honest on their team sheets, and yes it is biting us now, but as you said how many other teams tried to bypass this initially

  • @JR (Comment 70) : The lesson here is don’t risk star players on pre season friendlies when you have a bigger competition to think about. Risk and reward. Also having a springbok tour in the middle or SR is utter crap.

  • If push comes to shove Willie can always be moved to flyhalf and mvovo or Odwa fall back to fullback.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 74) : so the team goes into the season with the big players having had no match practice? How does that work? Andre Esterhuizen got injured in practice a couple of weeks ago having played almost the entire regular season and friendlies without injury. Do we stop practicing?

  • @JR (Comment 77) : At least it’s not as bad as the tsietas had with Goosen a few years back – injuring himself when practicing his kicks at goal (or something to that effect) ;-)

  • Is Adriaanse injured?

Only explanation that I can think of for that touring squad.

  • @JD (Comment 86) : A few Chiefs fans will be very miffed if the Sharks managed to get clearance on those two, with them not getting clearance on Messam.

…not that we have any other cover at fullback/fh and lock/7, so maybe the Sharks got them approved – if so, well done to Gary and team.
