Teichmann starts 2 August

Gary Teichmann will take over as Sharks CEO on 2 August, rather than at the end of October as was originally thought.

Board Chairman Stephen Saad confirmed Teichmann’s appointment this morning, on an initial contract of 3 years. Outgoing CEO John Smit will remain available to assist Teichmann with handover and has committed to helping out wherever he can in the months to come – however, it’s pretty clear that Teichmann will be steering the ship himself from the start of next month.

The former Bok captain rebuffed any suggestion of bringing in trusted lieutenants right away, stating that his first goal was to acquaint himself with how things work at the Sharks before making any changes.

Saad confirmed that while revenues have increased under John Smit’s leadership over the last three years, expenditure has done so too, with the weakening Rand in a climate of international competition for top players resulting in a ballooning wage bill. Supersport has agreed to provide a R40m cash injection to recapitalise the business, as we reported earlier, but Teichmann has work ahead of him in terms of rationalising the player budget and figuring out how to make the Sharks successful within their means. The Chairman was quick to emphasise, though, that these challenges are not unique to the Sharks and they he felt Smit had done an admirable job over the last three years in terms of attracting sponsorship and sorting out various governance issues.

Saad further pointed out that the Sharks have been battling accumulated losses since 2008 – that fact seems to directly contradict former CEO Brian van Zyl’s view – and are working towards reaching break-even status by 2019. The current anticipated loss for the year (2016) should be between four and five Million Rand.

  • Good news….

…with Smit leaving, let’s hope BvZ also takes a hike – he’s been way too economical with his “revelations” to the Mercury.

    You are in the know?
Please give a few details about this construction company. What is the revenues? How many employees? Any well known projects they’ve been involved with? What is GTs role, active management or figure head? Did he build this company or inherit? How much did it grow? Any failed audits, tax issues, corruption allegations? Will he quit there or split his time?

    So on.

People are too enamored with ex players. It would have been beter if the new CEO was someone of whom we’ve never read of on a rugby site.

  • @fyndraai (Comment 16) : I get where you coming from, and no I don’t have all these exact answers at my disposal, but what I can gather when doing a mere Google search is that the company is doing very well for him, I doubt if any one on the site including you have any idea as the these figures you are looking for, or asked, now my question to you is, who should they then have employed that would be affordable, and that knows what the Sharks are all about, if I were part of the interview proses I would also been able to tell you the other candidates were and why GT was the best possible candidate that was successful in his application

  • Expenditures increased due to bad acquisitions also. If we had been able to keep Plumtree and not pay for Jake, if we didn’t get fat Steve and his over the hill mates while losing a boat load of talent during the past 3 or so years. If we could only stop lying about the state of things at the sharks. How good was John smit and his regime for the sharks all things considered?

  • An initial contract of three years… working towards a break even status by 2019? Wonder if this is a clause in GT’s contract. If they don’t reach break even status or better by 2019 will GT also be wanting to spent more time with his family? Please don’t misunderstand me. I think that he has the skills, knowledge and passion for the Sharks to make things work, I just question that both his contract and a target was linked to the same year.

  • Steven Saad said there were 25-30 applicants for the CEO position but seeing Teichman’s name there immediately made him their favourite. From what i understand Teichman started Teichman Civils whilst he was still an active player but was on a very small scale back then with revenues of only R30 000, the company now has reported revenues in the 100 million plus mark and has diversified into various civil engineering aspects. Teichman is believed to be a quiet businessman in that he doesnt shout and scream and throw his toys- he just calmly gets his way. He is a very imposing figure in a boardroom meeting i am told. Its clear that Teichman has much more experience in business than John Smit and is also used to making tough boardroom decisions for the betterment of the business. Will he have a soft spot for the players that may cloud his judgement in terms of business decisions, we shall see, but i have a feeling he may be empathetic towards them but will still maintain business is business. I just hope he surrounds himself in time with knowledgeable and trustworthy people
