The Sharks XV face the SWD Eagles in the final match of a rather disappointing Currie Cup qualifying round, at 7pm this evening.

All we can really say of the season to date – based on results – is that it’s a damn good thing the Sharks aren’t depending on this team to secure qualification to the Currie Cup proper.

Khaya Majola returns to captain the team, retaking the armband from Dave McDuling, who is nowhere to be seen this week.

Sharks XV: 15. Alrin Eksteen, 14. Morne Joubert, 13. Neil Maritz, 12. Heimar Williams, 11. Malcolm Cele, 10. Inny Radebe, 9. Hanco Venter, 8. Christiaan de Bruin, 7. Francois Kleinhans, 6. Khaya Majola , (Captain), 5. Jean Droste, 4. Wian Vosloo, 3. Gerhard Engelbrecht, 2. Stephan Coetzee, 1. Juan Schoeman
Replacements:
16. Kerron Van Vuuren, 17. Mzamo Majola, 18. Ruan Kramer, 19. Johan du Toit, 20. Jaywinn Juries, 21. Duncan Campbell, 22. Sandile Kubeka

Edit: And just as I write this, Khaya pulls out sick! Here’s the updated side:

Sharks XV: 15. Alrin Eksteen, 14. Morne Joubert, 13. Neil Maritz, 12. Heimar Williams (capt), 11. Malcolm Cele, 10. Inny Radebe, 9. Hanco Venter, 8. Christiaan de Bruin, 7. Johan du Toit, 6. Francois Kleinhans, 5. Jean Droste, 4. Wian Vosloo, 3. Gerhard Engelbrecht, 2. Stephan Coetzee, 1. Juan Schoeman
Replacements:
16. Kerron Van Vuuren, 17. Mzamo Majola, 18. Ruan Kramer, 19. Retief Marais, 20. Jaywinn Juries, 21. Duncan Campbell, 22. Sandile Kubeka

  • Whats the worst that could happen ;) Really not sure what the Sharks tried to achieve in this comp other than just fielding a team. Missed opportunity indeed

  • Marius Louw was taken off the field last week by cart. He didn’t look in any discomfort but obviously that has kept him out this week. Any clue what happened to him?

From the little I’ve seen he looks to be a fair sized unit and one I’d hope to see progress to the Senior side.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 1) : I do not think it is all that bad – another 11 u21s involved in tonights game.

The test of whether or not this comp has in anyway accomplished anything, will be the u21 currie cup campaign. should they go on to win it, it has done its job.

Anyone in the know, realises that this comp was used for a lot of players whose contracts expire at the end of the year – ie, do we want to offer them another contract, nothing can be read from this competition, I am not even sure the players can give two hoots – like I said, I do not agree with the attitude, but at the same time, trying to put myself in their shoes is impossible.

  • @Vonno13 (Comment 5) : must say I do think you’re spot on when saying the true test will be to see how the under 21′s do in the competition.
Players (whose contracts are about to expire) that played in the CC team did not do their chances any good!
