No rest for the wicked

The dust is barely even half settled after Super Rugby (since it’s still actually carrying on for four of the 18 teams), but the Currie Cup Premier Division is already all but upon us.

The good news for Sharks fans is that we have less than two more weeks of navel gazing and pointless recriminations before some more genuine on field action. I’m not sure whether that will be the cause of happiness or more disappointment, but since I’m usually a “glass half full” kind of guy, I’ll go with the former.

There is, of course, plenty that needs to be decided before then. We know little about the Sharks’ plans and coaching make up for the competition, other than the assumption that Robert du Preez will take on the head coaching mantle (based on what was announced earlier). Ryan Strudwick – as the only genuine forwards coach left in the setup – should be involved too, but with talk doing the rounds that the Sharks have brought in former Bok and Bulls backline coach Ricardo Loubscher, it’s a little murky as to how the rest of the coaching tiles will fall. With Gary Gold and his team having only arrived back in Durban yesterday, there’s not been much time to firm up these plans, but we’re hoping for an announcement shortly.

The fixture list has not yet been confirmed, but a provisional set that somehow slipped out yesterday sees the Sharks take on the Pumas in Nelspruit on Friday 5 August in their first match. We await confirmation over the next few days to see whether that is, indeed, the first match, with most of us, I’m sure, holding thumbs that it won’t be.

We’ll start to look at what a Currie Cup squad could look like a bit later today.

  • Rob, I don’t think Loubscher was ever the Bulls backline coach, I stand to be corrected but I am almost sure he walked strait from Tukkies or some varsity team into the Bok coaching setup.

  • This is my first time on this blog. I am involved with rugby coaching in KZN and I am really concerned about the current state of rugby. Glenwood dominate schoolboy rugby in KZN to such an extent that no other school can compete with them consistently. that is not good for KZN rugby and our cravenweek side has proven that. I attended the under 19 game on Friday against the Lions. We were lucky to score 12 points. Our flyhalf was very poor. We gave 59 points to the Lions who has already lost three games. Our curry cup side was poor. Our university side the IMPI cannot compete against the top dogs. Our super rugby side struggled. During the under 19 game we only had two players of color in the side. SA Rugby and the politics are forcing us to pick players of color. If they are not getting game time at the under 19s where will they get the opportunity to be exposed. The Sharks Academy is not producing the stars we have hoped for in fact these days the best schoolboy players rather go to the Lions, Bulls and Stormers and the Sharks get the rest. Unless we get a complete overhaul we will keep on struggling. please get the Boland coach on board as soon as possible.

  • Ricardo Loubscher never filled me with much confidence with the Boks so not excited about this at all. Surely we have enough coaches without bringing in another one that doesn’t have a overwhelmingly good record…

I’d hope to see Rob du Preez as head coach and see what he does with this team. I imagine the only SR guys we’ll lose are Lambie, Beast, JPP, Willie to the Boks or Japan and Jordaan to France. That leaves us with the bulk of our SR squad, that’s good news I feel. Most of those guys can be swapped with quality stand in’s.

  • @the rugby coach (Comment 15) : Thanks so much for your first comment and welcome to the site. I think we are all very concerned about the general health of Sharks rugby at all levels and there’s a huge amount that needs to be done to overhaul the structures and get us to be competitive again.

One point, though – we don’t discuss politics on this site, so please let’s not hear any more about that aspect.

This Glenwood thing is a worry to me. Is it because they buy in players?

  • @robdylan (Comment 17) : Rob, Glenwood has a terrible history of buying players, we went there in 1997 and gave them a proper hiding, right after the game three of our players had offers on the table.

  • @robdylan (Comment 17) : Just on the Glenwood thing Rob…they are only ranked 8th in the country and not 1 other KZn side is close to the top 20. So is it really a case of Glenwood being too good or other kzn schools actually being that poor? Should the other kzn schools not be attempting to improve to the levels of Glenwood and the higher ranked schools? Being a Glenwood old boy i wont lie it is very nice to see them win a lot more than they lose these days as trust me that wasnt the case when i was at school etc….although not much fuss was made of the schools winning a lot back then.

  • @robdylan (Comment 17) : I approve of the Hilton stance to the Glenwood issue. “Hilton College has, with a heavy heart, decided to discontinue all rugby fixtures against Glenwood for the foreseeable future. The simple reason for this decision is that Glenwood’s fairly recent strategy has, in our firm opinion, now moved them into a different league. Apart from the increased risk of injury, which is associated with such mismatches, we see no educational value (for any of the players) in playing matches where the contest is decidedly one-sided”.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 21) : Hilton haven’t bought in players to the best of my knowledge. They cancelled the second Hilton MHS game in 98 due to the Grey Bloem player controversy. Accepted that this is an arrogant view, however, I heard told that if Hilton were to buy in players they would be the best in the country.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 22) : Do you really think Glenwood is the only school offering bursaries to top players? I also didnt see much of fuss when schools like College, Michaelhouse and Hilton were whipping away Glenwoods players in years gone by. Im not saying they do everything perfectly well, far from it. It just seems as though its easy to blame Glenwood now for other schools being weak. So seems there are only 15 good players in KZN….no wonder he get hammered at Craven week.

  • @robdylan (Comment 26) : Get a bigger can? ;) haha apologies. I didnt intend to go towards the bursary debate but rather the issue that KZN schools seem to want the one good school to be weaker and not them to be stronger…which for me is a problem in so far as kzn rugby is concerned. But hey maybe KZN win the science olympiad

  • @SheldonK (Comment 27) : Agreed the issue is about having one good rugby school. My personal view is there having the one strong school is detrimental to the province as a the players are unlikely to hit their full potential playing against substandard players. Maybe bolster a couple of the schools is the solution.

  • @durbsguy (Comment 28) : Look i agree that having only 1 good school is not good for anyone. But Glenwood havnt exactly won by a country mile against other KZN sides this year s the gulf isnt that big. . So what im trying to point towards is that there seems to be a serious shortage of quality rugby players in kzn schools. That and/or the coaching of these players is very sub standard. Perhaps a combo of both. If we are honest the KZn craven week side were probably the 6th or 7th best team there…which is really a concern for kzn rugby…and that concern is backed up by the current sharks u19 results.

But it’s not like we were any good in the backline this year anyway, or it couldn’t get any worse could it? Lets hope he makes a difference. All we need is to realize that we just have to pass the fucking ball and pass it at the right time, not like Odwa did when he passed too early for JP for his try, almost missed it. Pull the defender/s then pass. If we could just get that right, I couldn’t care less who the coach is. Backline set moves and tactics can be sorted out after we get the basics right.
