Super Rugby 2016: Semi final preview and predictions

Just two games to go and interest is waning, since there’s no further Sharks participation. Anyway, let’s see…

Semi-final 1: Hurricanes v Chiefs

An interesting all-Kiwi clash here, between two sides that put in phenomenal performances in the quarter-finals. The Canes embarrassed the Sharks in Wellington, whilst the Chiefs did a possibly even more thorough job in dismantling the Stormers in Cape Town. The Canes suffered a big blow, though, with captain Dane Coles in serious doubt for this clash. The Chiefs look more settled from a personnel point of view, but then again they have had to travel back from South Africa this week, which must count against them. South African fans will be hoping for a Chiefs upset here, to hand the Lions a possibility of a home final, but my feeling is that the Hurricanes will be too good at home, given the travel factor. One should never bet against a brain fart from the Wellington side, but my feeling is that they’ve learned from happened last year and will find a way to win this. Canes by about 4.

Hurricanes: 15. James Marshall, 14. Cory Jane, 13. Matt Proctor, 12. Willis Halaholo, 11. Jason Woodward, 10. Beauden Barrett, 9. TJ Perenara, 8. Victor Vito, 7. Ardie Savea, 6. Brad Shields, 5. Michael Fatialofa, 4. Vaea Fifita, 2. Dane Coles (Captain) / Ricky Riccitelli / Ben May, 1. Loni Uhila
Replacements: 17. Chris Eves, 18. Michael Kainga, 19. Mark Abbott, 20. Callum Gibbins, 21. Jamison Gibson-Park, 22. Vince Aso, 23. Julian Savea

Chiefs: 15. Damian McKenzie, 14. Sam McNicol, 13. Seta Tamanivalu, 12. Anton Lienert-Brown, 11. James Lowe, 10. Aaron Cruden, 9. Tawera Kerr-Barlow, 8. Tom Sanders, 7. Sam Cane (Captain), 6. Taleni Seu, 5. Brodie Retallick, 4. Dominic Bird, 3. Atunaisa Moli, 2. Nathan Harris, 1. Kane Hames
Replacements: 16. Hikawera Elliott, 17. Siegfried Fisi’ihoi, 18. Mitchell Graham, 19. Lachlan Boshier, 20. Michael Leitch, 21. Brad Weber, 22. Toni Pulu, 23. Shaun Stevenson

Semi-final 2: Lions v Highlanders

Just how influential will the loss of Warren Whiteley prove? That’s the question here, I’d say. With the ‘Landers having flown East for the game, they will be the ones who are slightly fatigued and if the Lions hit them hard early on and start to build scoreboard pressure, it could be a relatively comfortable win for them. That said, these Highlanders have the best defence in the competition and know how to force turnovers through defensive pressure. With a pair of Smiths, a Sopoaga and a Fekitoa in the mix, their backline is every bit as deadly as the Lions’ too, so I would bet against them scoring a try or so on the day. The Lions have also lost a key man in Ross Cronje and could end up exposed should the inexperienced Dillon Smit need to come on early. They’ll be backing their ferocious pack to win the game for them, though, long before any thought of bench comes into the equation. Lions by 8 or so, for me.

Lions: 15. Andries Coetzee, 14. Ruan Combrinck, 13. Lionel Mapoe, 12. Rohan Janse van Rensburg, 11. Courtnall Skosan, 10. Elton Jantjies, 9. Faf de Klerk, 8. Ruan Ackermann, 7. Warwick Tecklenburg, 6. Jaco Kriel (Captain), 5. Franco Mostert, 4. Andries Ferreira, 3. Julian Redelinghuys, 2. Malcolm Marx, 1. Dylan Smith
Replacements: 16. Akker van der Merwe, 17. Corne Fourie, 18. Jacques van Rooyen, 19. Lourens Erasmus, 20. Stephan de Wit, 21. Dillon Smit, 22. Howard Mnisi, 23. Jako van der Walt

Highlanders: 15. Ben R Smith (Captain), 14. Waisake Naholo, 13. Matt Faddes, 12. Malakai Fekitoa, 11. Patrick Osborne, 10. Lima Sopoaga, 9. Aaron Smith, 8. Luke Whitelock, 7. James Lentjes, 6. Elliot Dixon, 5. Tom Franklin, 4. Alex Ainley, 3. Josh Hohneck, 2. Ash Dixon, 1. Daniel Lienert-Brown
Replacements: 16. Greg Pleasants-Tate, 17. Aki Seiuli, 18. Ross Geldenhuys, 19. Joe Wheeler, 20. Liam Squire, 21. Dan Pryor, 22. Te Aihe Toma, 23. Marty Banks

  • The four best teams in this lopsided keystone cops competition, some how managed to make it to the semis.
Two potentially awesome contests coming up and then the survivors get one more go.
Whoever survives its anyones to take now.

  • @John (Comment 1) : if the lions win the championship they will be the only other SA team to win the title other than the bulls who have won it 3 times . I don’t think people understand the magnitude of this situation the lions are in , I mean who would’ve thought that the lions of all teams, who just 3 years ago was SA worst Franchise for a long period of time , would be playing a home semi at Ellis park. its the same like saying Namibia would be playing at a WC final in 2019

Super12 is where SR officially kicked off as a premier club competition…also the one that took SA 11 years to finally crack.

  • Smart move would be to build 2019 rwc Bok team around a base of Lions players….SA will have to adapt to what the Lions are doing, or face 4 more years of going backwards.

Team to go with for RC: Lions front row, Lions 6, 8, 9/10 combo, centre combo, Combrink and Skosan on the wings (not completely sold on Skosan yet, but he’s been good in the play-offs).

Fill in the blanks from the other franchises.

Mostert and lood are my best lock pairing and you won’t see them hitting the gym as much as Etzebeth does imo.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 73) : Fuck you must be an old coot to remember that white parrot.
Lions did very well but and I am sorry its but they only won by12points and the Kiwi dropped a completed try over the line so it could have been a lot closer.
Next week in Wellington will be a huge game and if the Lions win it they will have beaten the Crusaders,Chiefs and Hurricanes in successive weeks, that is a major milestone and any team that achieves that is worthy of legendary status.
Major stumbling block is that the Hurricanes are the only New Zealandteam to never have won the Super Rugby Tournament.

Has any coach (assistant or head coach) other than dingo Deans reached more semi’s and finals than Plum?

  • How much truth to rumoured Kings being kicked out of CC premier, and replaced by Leopards…

Bigger question: who’s going to replace them for SR next year? Surely they won’t be able to compete at this rate?

  • @The hound (Comment 74) : haha . somebody did call me oom at a club on Friday . should maybe consider getting a bike …

also remember that with 5 min to go the score was 42-16 . the game was already won and the Lions took the peddle off the gas . that dropped try was lucky . but that is part of rugby . we will take then win

you have to be in the final to be able to win it . so we will do our best . proud of the boys regardless of the result next week .

As for the game think Lions had the game won with about 15 min to go so final score flatter the Landers a bit. The final is going to be tough but think the Lions might just have a chance as they will be ready and the Canes will have a lot of pressure on them especially after losing the final (at home) last year.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 81) : I agree with you,you make your own luck,
I thought the New Zealanders were very magnanimous in their defeat, refusing to blame the travel or the altitude ,contrast that with the whimpering Stormers the week before.Burger and Fleck both used the ridiculous excuse that they were beaten because they hadn’t faced decent opposition all year. What a steaming pile of batshit.First hard game they had all year they bled 60 points in their own back yard.
Anyway I am hoping that the Lions do it in Wellington.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 82) : i think its rather a celebration of what the team has achieved . lets see . i think our boys can do it . it will be hard . but im behind them all the way

    @50shadesofshark2 (Comment 83) : i have no idea , unfortunately

@JD (Comment 84) : yea if you look at the subs and when they came on i think Coach Ackers knew the game was won and he took of the main players . I dont read to much into the last few minutes

@The hound (Comment 85) : i found the Highlanders coach refusal to blame the travel awesome . They took responsibility for the performance and i can respect that . Dont think many SA teams have the ability to do the same .

I think the Lions believe they can win . And believe is very important . lets see what happens on Saturday . Going to be one hell of a match
