Kings conundrum stymieing Currie Cup planning

Don’t be fooled, friends – the list of Currie Cup fixtures doing the rounds in some places is no more than provisional at this stage, which is rather worrying considering that the first round of games kicks off in just four days’ time.

The stumbling block is the participation of the EP Kings in the Premier Division. Enough has been said elsewhere about the state of affairs there, but with the Union facing liquidation and no credible player corps on board a few days before competition kick-off, it appears simply impossible for the Kings to field a competitive side this campaign.

While various options are being mooted – including a rather nonsensical idea to promote the Leopards (currently about the tenth-best team in the country) to the Premier Division in order to maintain the lob-sided nine-team format – for my money, the simplest option would be to simply discard the Kings and carry on with only eight sides.

Whatever is decided, it is best if it were done quickly, since those teams who are trying to prepare for a good Currie Cup season need certainty about when and where their matches will take place.

  • I for one would love to see the leopards in the Currie Cup Premier Division. Firstly because it would mean that there will be good Currie Cup rugby here in my home town but secondly (and for my part more importantly), as a partner union to the sharks, it can give the Sharks a good indication of young varsity players that can be utilized during Super Rugby next year, playing against the top Currie Cup teams week in and week out.

I get the fact that they might get thumped in a game or two, but im convinced there will be more games where they push a big side to the very end or maybe even win. It will go a long way for the youngsters at the Leopard`s development.

  • SARU must be proud of themselves, screwed over the Lions, fed their Kings creation to the wolves.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 2) : at the end of the day the year out did us good . we would not have been were we are today if it was not for the year out .

The scary part is we are 2 points away from being where the Kings are now …

  • @Zibbie (Comment 4) : That year out nearly killed the Lions – took some seriously clever boxing to put a competitive team on the field for that promo/relegation game….saru hung your boys out for the vultures to pick apart – had everything gone to script,, the Lions would have lost that promo game, and we’d have no teams contesting SR in the semi and final this year.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 4) : Looking at where you are now, it was a good thing but it could also have also done immeasurable damage from which it could have been very hard to return from.

  • A few weeks ago I said that a rugby team would never be liquidated. Now it seems I may have been wrong. :)

  • @fyndraai (Comment 7) : @SheldonK (Comment 8) : they can be liquidated just like any other business. As any other business they have assets like office equipment, vehicle, etc that can be sold to get money to pay the liquidators. What remains to be seen is if SARU will allow this to happen or will they step in to help!?!?!?

  • Who is the ones getting hurt in all of this? The players at EP must be worried sick about what the future holds. SARU has a real problem here as they are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. No matter what they decide they will get criticized. If they cut EP from the CC then all those players (most) and backroom staff will be out on the streets. If they do step in and assist they will have to forever carry them unless someone can turn the union around. But with the current situation at EP it is hard to imagine anyone apart from SARU willing to assist. Perhaps SARU is deserving of this problem although I hate what it means to the people at the union.

yes . I believe SARU were rubbing there hands together waiting for the Lions to loose so the Problem can go away . I dont think anybody expected things to go this way .

I feel the Lions used the “Luxury” of being away from the spotlight for a year to get things back on track . If you watch the Lions saga on Supersport you will hear both Ackers and De bruin say they decided to reset and start from 0 .

What was striking for me from the Kings is that they did nothing on the 2 years out . The Lions had the Lions challenge . it was not perfect (far from it) , but it kept our players busy . We also pulled together and won the Vodacom Cup that year .

  • Saru should sell EPRU to a private investor/s. Use it as an experiment if private ownership ala French or English rugby clubs can work in South Africa. I mean, they don’t have anything to lose.

  • They will never sell! Ownership/possession is 9ths of the law. They can then not control that union outright.

  • @JustPlainSHARK (Comment 16) : Jurie Roux owns the Kings SR franchise license and is sole director….EP got nothing from the SR fees and TV money so had no chance to make any progress.

Yeah two years wasted by the Watsons & Craus and bled the union dry and makes everyone fume locally but the pathetic amateur way of electing the top brass is a major stumbling block and will not change anything in any way. Drastic overhaul required and urgent clarity in CC and SR, especially SR license.

This way, Saru / Roux can award the license to anyone they please

  • @Kabouter (Comment 17) : That Roux was able to weasel his way into that little SR situation, speaks volumes to the hole-y mess South African rugby is in….shifty character at the helm of running SA’s most profitable sport.

Epru being liquidated probably plays nicely into his little pyramid scheme/pension fund.
