Willie the Wasp

No, this is not an 80s cartoon character that I’m talking about – unfortunately. I think Maya probably did have a friend called Willy, but he was definitely a bee. And a bit of a sad case all round, come to think of it.

Anyway, all that aside, this is really just a short piece to confirm the unfortunate news that Willie le Roux will not play for the Sharks again. I’m sure this isn’t going to come as a major shock to anyone, given that he was initially contracted only for this year’s Super Rugby competition, with hopes that he might accept an extension afterwards. The lure of a reportedly massive offer from London Wasps has, alas, put paid to any prospects of any more Super Rugby in Durban, at least for the time being.

Details are not currently clear- I believe Wasps will announce this later today – but le Roux looks set to move to the UK after completing his current stint with Canon in Japan.

Willie – thanks for the thrills this year and best of luck for the future!

  • Good luck to him. His Sharks days didnt really have the impact we had hoped but i think his Jap stints counted for that. Seems his Bok days are numbered too so hope he enjoys his ‘retirement’ in the UK. Some serious backline Wasps are creating there.

  • He never ever settled at the Sharks aways looked unhappy on the field.
if you watched the game thru a good pair of binoculars, you would have seen him constantly berating those around him every time there was mistake, lots of it his fault. He also gave me the impression that if it were a choice of getting injured ,he was not going to sacrifice himself for the Sharks.
Actually been a huge disappointment to me as I have been a fan since his Griqua days.

  • Another journeyman bites the dust…

We might as well worm our way into the epru, and recruit only from there (pretty much where most of our talent comes from in any case) – what with all the talent over there being grossly mismanaged by the greedy ones, there’s no reason for the Sharks not to get a proper foot in there…..KZN school boy talent is pretty much non existent, and we have no Varsity Cup side – NMMU and the schools over there will do nicely.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 13) : Might as well turn them into a feeder union for the Sharks – it’s the only hope the region’s talent have of making it big…..the setup in EP didn’t work before Watson, and it most certainly has not worked with Watson – Sharks on the other hand, able to stay competitive with very little local talent.

…and, that list of yours is rather short, compared to what’s being cherry-picked from the EP.

But had we retained all the kzn school boys we could have a XV looking like: 1. Chadwick 2. Cooper 3.Cilliers 4. Bresler 5. Hargreaves 6. Coetzee 7. Rhodes 8. Whiteley 9. Cronje 10. Cronje 11. Richards 12. Barritt 13. Murray 14. Combrinck 15. Lambie

  • I not under the illusion that any team can this day and age put out a SR or even a CC premier division team made up mostly of most of players from that province/franchise. Yes its nice when that is the case or at least your captain is from that province

but when people refer to local, is everyone on he same page ? does local mean born in that province/went to school in that province, was art of the academy etc ?

I was born in the western cape, grew up in a different province when my fam moved as my dad had changed offices and then moved to cape town all before the age of 16 so which union MUST I play for ?

If I were running a union I would take it into account but not at the expense of putting together the best possible team.

Anyway, About Willie: guys I know there are a lot of Ryno Smith fans on here, and I dont have anything against the kid, I’ve watched him play for the leopard in the Prelim CC and I’ve seen him in the varsity cup, he looked good in both. but I’m not convinced his super rugby material just yet, i hope he proves me wrong in the currie cup, I would have liked the leopards to play premier division CC as reported so we could see him play, I guess he can play for us now. Right now I rate mvovo, tyler fisher (can we get him back, his killing it off the bench for the pumas), Bosch, Eksteen ahead of him.

I’m not one of those people obsessed with having big rugby player in the backline. but when I saw Aplon and Kolbe play for the first time I was more inspired than seeing smith run out for us at super rugby level. he just didn’t seem up to it.

IMHO if we go from Willie this year to Smith or odwa as first choose SR FB next year we’re in trouble

Play bosch, his the closes thing we have to a McKenzie, or April

  • @JD (Comment 71) : If you are still quoting Ian and the block heads your rhythm stick is a gray hockey stick. Or grey ….

  • Interesting Wasps backline next year with Cipriani, Beale, Le Roux, Wade and their scrumhalf Robson i think is a good one too.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 75) : Interesting,Cipriani and Beale both have well publicised problems with booze and together with Willie’s petulance going to take a lot to manage those three fragile egos into one unit, good luck to who ever elected take that on.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 77) : Wasps actually play out of Coventry these days. Seems I goofed in my article by referring to them as “London Wasps”, since they’re actually just called “Wasps” now as well.

Being based in Coventry is probably worse. London has many distractions – Coventry just has pubs.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 80) : except that would mean chucking out 3/4 of the players in the Premier League, so I’m sure they’ll find a loophole.

  • @robdylan (Comment 85) : Well this is why im very curious to see what develops. The loophole could be that no british citizen could do the job at the same standard or level as those players. If Britain gets tough and French rugby eventually wakes up and tries to save the french game and restricts players there could be a mass exodus to the Jap league or even this new US league. Interesting times….the rand just dipped under R18 to the Pound…

  • Very sad news. Been one of my favourite players for quite some time now. A South African rugby player that thinks on his feet, quite a rare commodity.
