Still no Lambie as Bok squad named

Sharks captain Patrick Lambie is still suffering the after effects of a concussion sustained two months ago and has thus not been considered for selection for the Springbok Rugby Championship squad. Coach Allister Coetzee named a 31-man squad on Saturday for the opening matches of the competition, which starts with a match against Argentina in just under a fortnight.

With Willie le Roux and JP Pietersen both omitted – ostensibly to give them a rest – only a paltry two Sharks players have made the cut. Beast Mtawarira and Lwazi Mvovo will keep the black and white flag flying in green, While Coenie Oosthuizen is also somehow on the injured list.

There’s a single first-time call-up in the group, going to highly-deserving Lions hooker Malcolm Marx. In a move sure to please yet more of his fans, Racing MEtroa utility back Johan Goosen has been recalled, as have Bryan Habana, Francois Hougaard and Juan de Jongh. In all, nine members of the squad play for the Lions; a seismic shift compared to just last year, when the Joburg franchise had not a single payer in the Rugby Championship group.

Springbok Squad:
Forwards: Lood de Jager, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Eben Etzebeth, Steven Kitshoff, Vincent Koch, Jaco Kriel, Francois Louw, Malcolm Marx, Bongi Mbonambi, Teboho Mohoje, Franco Mostert, Tendai Mtawarira, Sikhumbuzo Notshe, Trevor Nyakane, Julian Redelinghuys, Adriaan Strauss – captain, Duane Vermeulen, Warren Whiteley
Backs: Ruan Combrinck, Damian de Allende, Juan de Jongh, Faf de Klerk, Johan Goosen, Bryan Habana, Francois Hougaard, Elton Jantjies, Jesse Kriel, Lionel Mapoe, Lwazi Mvovo, Rudy Paige, Morne Steyn

  • Ending around 854′s in superbru gives me some right to give oppinion about bok squad… “Ouch” is the only word that is coming up. Even with Lambie picked… This is probably worst Bok squad ever. What makes it worst is…. That the All Blacks improved after Richie era… Ouch again

  • @ebenp (Comment 1) : So true, some shocking selections, deJonghe,Morne focken Steyn,Mbonambi and Nyake, Houghaard,Jesse Kriel, and sadly Beast and Lawazi.
Etterhuizen, and that Lions centre robbed,Lewies,Thomas du Toit,Dylan Smith, but get used to it we are noe in the era of the remarkably mediocre ,average and uninspiring Alistar Coetzee.

  • Juan de Jongh was picked as inside centre cover I presume? I’d have preferred Rohan Janse van Rensburg ahead of him. They’re about equally shaky defensively but at least Rohan offers an established partnership with Mapoe and a better play-making ability.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 7) : Archery – those Koreans are simply untouchable…especially the men, hardly missing the 10 – really impressive.

Found myself watching fencing last night too, Bronze medal – also came very close….and the woman’s cycling: the crash, and then that finish…love the Olympics.

  • As always nobody will ever be happy with a squad chosen. I think the forwards selected are pretty good and we should be able to put out a very strong forward combo. Im not too sure what i think of the backs…going to be interesting to see the combos picked. Van Rensburg can feel a bit unlucky…perhaps he should phone Damien McKenzie and they can chat about it.

  • @The hound (Comment 2) : picking players as vastly different in style as Jantjies and Steyn in the same group shows that there IS NO PLAN

  • Lambie has now been away for so long I’d rather he plays CC and go back to the Boks for the EOYT. 2016 was not been his year and I’d rather see him play some rugby at a lower level to get his body and mind back into the game before we put him back into the test arena.

On the Bok selections Janse van Rensburg must feel gutted. I feel Coetzee’s selection of only 1 inside centre (an out of form one to boot) is very concerning and hate to see what his back up plan is. I’m still not over the moon about the loosies but still feel more excited about this squad than 99% of Meyers.

Jantjies 11. Habana 12. DeJongh 13. Mapoe 14. Combrinck 15. Kriel. Bench: Beast, Marx, Koch, Etzebeth, Louw, Hougaard, Goosen, DeAllende

  • @Hulk (Comment 11) : Goosen at inside centre might be an option he’s keeping open, saw him play a few games there for Racing….which would mean Steyn as backup fh.

For me, too few Sharks put their hands properly up during SR, which makes Bok selection a non-event for me…I am far more interested in seeing the future of Sharks rugby in action – hopefully by next year this time, I can throw naartjies at AC for not selecting a majority Sharks Bok team

  • Guys before we get all upset about who was picked and who not, we must remember that SARU have representative goals they have to achieve by 2019. Don’t be surprised if Juan de Jongh gets picked ahead of Rohan Janse van Rensburg for example. Beast will get picked ahead of any other loosehead for example too. I think Siya Kolisi is injured so that’s another number we won’t have. On Friday I watched the Bulls/WP game and the lock for the Bulls will soon be in the Bok mix as he shows some promise too. Whether we like it or not, this will soon become a reality in this country as far as selections are concerned. Be prepared for more shitty squads in future…..

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 23) : Will mostly likely be DuToit…although i dont think he is a good scrumming tighthead and could give some penalties away. If i look at the Sharks win vs the Pumas a large part of that was us scrumming then backwards and giving us front foot ball. With a young backline im not sure how they will fare not getting great ball from the scrums.

This is my concern too. That scrum helped give us decent structure which we weren’t able to get anywhere else – think we stole some line outs in the last quarter only too.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 27) : Yeh look dont get me wrong DuToit is an adequate TH but i think he has some binding issues and struggles to hold his weight at TH. But playing him does give you a mobile prop ( much like Lourens has been of late). If the plan is DuToit at TH long term then they must please play him there as much as possible. The more this pack plays together the better they will get…just ask the Lions about a consistent pack

  • @SheldonK (Comment 28) :
I share the concern regarding us needing a very dominant scrum until our backline settles. Regarding Thomas himself, I’m less concerned given his age and the ability to tackle challenges he has shown thus far.

I still well remember Beast in his first 2 senior seasons – he was scrummed into the ground but learnt a helluva lot. Natural strength and dedication can achieve wonders.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 29) : I see your point regarding Thomas, and yes he can learn. It is just a lot easier to learn at LH where a big strong guy can get away with a poor technique and bind….at TH a poor technique is found out very quickly. So like i said if the plan is Thomas at TH long term then he needs to play there as many minutes as possible…and sort out that bind

  • This concussion of Pat is really bad. Not that I know much about it but always seems that within a few weeks most guys are back playing. I’m all for protecting him and making sure he is 100% cleared before playing again, I just wonder if he has had a history with concussions. Does anyone know. I also don’t want to go and read anything elsewhere that will more than likely be inaccurate. I’ve seen so many sites filled with doom and gloom over players and such.

Also might have missed it on here but sad news about Christian Lealiifano. Wish him well and hope he will be back on the field again in the near future.
