A hearty round of applause to Sharks loosehead Dale Chadwick, who earns a 50th Currie Cup career cap against Griquas this evening.

The 27-year-old former Westvillian has shown incredible loyalty over the years, playing largely a backup role at Super Rugby level to Beast Mtawarira, while coming into his own in the Currie Cup over the course of seven seasons, since earning a maiden cap back in 2009. Chadwick has certainly had his ups and downs over that period, with a lingering neck injury affecting his strength and confidence for a number of years before finally getting the attention it needed late last year. To his credit, Chadwick has stuck to his guns in Durban and has certainly been a rejuvenated presence in the 2016 season, with his combination of high work rate and destructive scrummaging ability adding huge value to the squad.

Dale (who also has 44 Super Rugby caps and is thus inching closer to a combined 100 for the Sharks) was one of the real stars of a Sharks pack that dismantled their Puma opposition in the scrums last week and his coaches will be hoping for more of the same against a fired-up Griquas front row his evening.

  • He’s always been a favorite of mine – on the field a “silent assassin”

  • I’ve been very critical of him for some time but recently he’s been going about his core duties well, hope to see him continue on this upward trend. Perhaps it’s the neck issue reported, which I’ve never been aware of, that has seen him struggle to be as consistent as what we’ve seen recently. Hope to see more good from him this CC.

  • We’ve been harsh on him when he didnt front up, but his been consistent of late. I like him, his appearance has changed this year too, with the ponytail and where’s Waldo glasses in SR to a more menacing look last week in nelpriut. He has been loyal, which i really appreciate, and still has many year ahead of him as props can stick around longer than most

  • Very chuffed for Dale, he is a true Sharks man, and has shown it with his loyalty. He has excellent scrummaging technique at loosehead, and has grown stronger year by year. There is a reason he has been picked ahead of Thomas the Tank this season, right now he is a better loosehead scrummager. Looking forward to many more years……….But please Dale…..PULL YOUR SOCKS UP!!!!

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 7) : Apparently the reason behind the socks stems from school days where he apparently gets cramp with the socks over his calves…

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 7) : Ha, ha, yeah the socks thing. I remember one year in particular when he came in for a lot of flack for all sorts of things but mainly about his socks. He saved our bacon that year with a winning try against the Pumas in a dour game that we were on our way to losing.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 8) : A little history on this site about the socks…..even before your time.
@Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 9) : hehehe, and as you know there is a certain someone who we rarely see anymore who will always and forever (for all eternity) not rate (even hate) Dale as a rugby player purely because of the socks.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 10) : I can think of 2 from years past that were obsessed with his socks, I think you are thinking about a lady but our desert ref also has a thing about socks and Chadwick.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 11) : hehehe, I was referring to our desert ref, whom I should add is still a friend I stay in touch with, and several years ago had a wonderful time visiting personally with him and his family. (He is now spending more time riding his bike than John Smit and Butchie ride theirs ;-) )

  • @SheldonK (Comment 8) : Whatever the reason, Chadders is in good company. A Natal Rugby legend in Craig Jamieson comes to mind. I also can’t remember Mort Mortassagne with his socks up.

  • I personally think if he worked very hard on getting his upper body strength up he will be a dangerous customer. He has the heart just needs the conditioning.
