Du Preez makes four changes

The Sharks team that runs out against Boland in the Currie Cup on Friday afternoon features four changes to the starting XV that took on Griquas the week before.

A rotational change in the front row sees Chiliboy Ralepelle gain a first Sharks start in the competition; he changes places with Franco Marais in an unenforced swap. Stephan Lewies has been rested this week and his place in the starting pack goes to Ruan Botha, another first Sharks Currie Cup start. The balance of the pack is unchanged, with Keegan Daniel again leading from open-side flank.

Du Preez has kept faith in his young players in key backline decision-making positions: Stefan Ungerer and Inny-Christian Radebe are the halfbacks, with Curwin Bosch continuing in the number 15 jersey. A niggle sees outside centre Lukhanyo Am make way for Heimar Williams, while fit-again Odwa Ndungane starts at right wing in place of Neil Maritz.

Du Preez has made a number of other changes on the bench; JC Astle comes in to provide lock cover, while Hanco Venter, Wandi Mjekevu and Garth April form an all-new trio of backline subs. Michael Claassens and Rhyno Smith join Maritz in missing out on selection this week.

Sharks: 15 Curwin Bosch, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Heimar Williams, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 S’bura Sithole, 10 Inny Radebe, 9 Stefan Ungerer, 8 Philip van der Walt, 7 Tera Mtembu, 6 Keegan Daniel, 5 Ruan Botha, 4 Etienne Oosthuizen, 3 Thomas du Toit, 2 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 1 Dale Chadwick.
Subs: 16 Franco Marais, 17 John-Hubert Meyer, 18 JC Astle, 19 Jean Deysel, 20 Hanco Venter, 21 Wandile Mjekevu, 22 Garth April

  • Ndungane playing instead of guys like Maritz and Smith makes no sense. I must be missing something. I do like the bench we have- looks very strong. Lets hope that starting pack lays a good foundation again- some serious power in that tight 5. And i see Mvovo misses out this week…

  • Just a fun fact: Aimee Barrett, SA’s only female referee at the Olympics will be assistant referee for the Sharks vs Boland game on Friday. Aimee is an ex KZN girl having been schooled at Northlands Girls High and having played rugby for both College Rovers and KZN as well as the SA Ladies side.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 2) : @John (Comment 4) : I’d also have liked to see Maritz at 13; he’s probably more familiar with the position than Heimar Williams. And Williams has never struck me as anything better than a Currie Cup level player at best, whereas Maritz had the look of someone who could still make the step up to Super Rugby.

Pity about Am, I’ve been enjoying watching his development.

  • @Culling Song (Comment 6) : It is a pity about Am as i have also enjoyed watching him improve. Heimar has been steady but as you say unspectacular and i believe its his last season, so his selection together with Odwa’s doesnt make that much sense. Also when considering that apparently Maritz doesnt have a contract with the Sharks beyond this year. So starting backline could have seen Maritz and Mjekevu replace Williams and Odwa with Smith coming onto the bench. That would be stronger in my opinion

@Culling Song (Comment 3) : Is Venter any good? Haven’t been following all the youngsters this year.

  • Although this is tough for Maritz as he has shown good potential, I don’t have a problem with bringing Odwa in to the mix, as I think it important to have a mix of young guns and more experienced settled players. The backline, is generally young, and I think it good to have some older heads to show the way as well.

  • Why, if Mvovo has been released for Currie Cup duty this weekend, would he then not make the team?

Surely it is not too late to include him?

What is the point then exactly?

  • @SheldonK (Comment 43) :

Thing is, I think this is a deeper problem.

Surely the coach can communicate at the start of the week, or even when the squad is selected, that certain players will in all likelihood be extra to what is required. I can tell you now that Coetzee knew before this week that Mvovo would not make the team.

Why not communicate that to the respective coaches and allow those coaches to be able to use the players. If this game was against the Bulls at Loftus, would we then have seen Mvovo play for the Sharks?

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 44) : I think because its Boland thats why he isnt playing. As you say i very much doubt that this possibility wasnt communicated earlier. And also that the players wait until they rock up to practice to find out what the moves are etc. All that is emailled to the players well in advance. And its not like he wasnt playing with these same guys a couple weeks ago. So next weeks Bulls game selection will be very interesting…assuming no injuries. Mvovo will be available…maybe even Lambie at a push.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 44) : you’re spot on. This is a long-running problem. Currie Cup coaches tend to get very defensive and can sometimes be downright stubborn if they feel the Bok coach is dictating selection to them late in the week.

Coetzee could just as well have released Mvovo on Sunday night. Rob likes to pick his team on a Monday morning and guys who aren’t at that first session don’t get in. Ask Garth April.I don’t think he’s wrong to set high standards and stick by them, whether the player is a 19-year-old or a Springbok.
