Sharks need to be clinical

The first three weeks of the Currie Cup have been very successful ones for the Sharks, but with only minnow opposition faced, they’ve not been properly tested. All that is about to change.

Things, in other words, are about to get real from here, with a nightmare three weeks comprising fixtures against the Blue Bulls, Western Province and the Cheetahs now staring Rob du Preez’s team in the face. There’ll be a slight respite after that, with an away game against the Kings and a bye week, before the final hurdle, a huge test at Ellis Park against the Lions. Du Preez and his team would do well not to look too far ahead at this stage, though and focus all their energy on the clash against their Pretorian arch-foes coming up this Saturday afternoon.

The Sharks, while impressive in much of what they’ve done to date, have been rather sloppy in execution of a number of things over the last three weeks. While there’s been little reason to question intensity, attacking intent or set piece performance, other parts of their game have let them down; handling has at times not been up to scratch, with defence and discipline (particularly at the tackle point) occasionally also not coming up to scratch. Worryingly for du Preez and his fellow coaches, these issues appear to have been getting somewhat worse over the course of the campaign to date, not better as one would expect. If we’re to look at the games played, it was the first performance against the Pumas in Nelspruit that was arguably the most complete one, with second-half lapses against both Griquas and Boland particularly disappointing given the high standards the Sharks have set for themselves.

Keegan Daniel summed this up well enough post match, but it’s worth repeating; the Sharks will not win the Currie Cup playing as they did against Boland and while Saturday’s game represents a golden opportunity for a big win against an out-of-sorts Bulls team, the Sharks simply have to be at their clinical best in order to achieve that result. Play like they did last week and they won’t win – it’s as simple as that.

Personnel changes for the Boland clash were always going to disrupt things a little. I felt the pack performed well enough (despite a strangely subdued showing from Philip van der Walt). Jean Deysel didn’t have a good outing personally, but he was far better the week before against Griquas and will, I’m sure, improve if asked to reprise his bench role. It was amongst the backs, though, were some of the new faces that came in did not live up to expectation and du Preez will, I’m sure, be looking to the likes of Lukhayno Am and perhaps also Neil Maritz to come back in, in place of Heimar Williams and Wandile Mjekevu, who disappointed in Wellington.

Having Lwazi Mvovo available is a real boost and it remains to be seen how du Preez will use him. Neither S’bura Sithole nor Odwa Ndungane did much wrong against Boland, so perhaps the Bok will have to make do with a bench spot this week. Inny Radebe certainly deserves an extended run at flyhalf, but du Preez will need to be brave when it comes to his other young play maker. Curwin Bosch was hesitant against Boland and took too many poor options, but he remains such a vital piece of the Sharks puzzle moving forward that I’d really like to coach to show confidence in him despite the inevitable consistency issues as he develops.

Every man in the squad, though, will need to take personal responsibility over the next few weeks and cut the errors out of his own game. To get through this run will require three absolutely clinical team performances and nothing less.

  • Ja maybe worth giving Odwa a go at 15 with Mvovo and Sithole on the wings but then the kicking of Bosch is lost. Glad I’m not the coach that must fit all the players into a match 22!!!

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 2) : personally I don’t think so. He was horrible under the high balls in his last test and think he needs to play wing at least until he gained confidence and showed that his catching is fixed.

  • @JD (Comment 3) : He is usually pretty good under the high ball so think after 1 bad game is tough to say he cant catch anymore. But agreed with him going in and out the Bok setup he just needs to play rugby at the moment

  • @SheldonK (Comment 4) : I’m not saying he can’t catch a ball. I have a feeling he’s low on confidence and needs a couple of good games to get it back that’s why I think he needs to play on the wing where he’s used to and comfortable before putting more pressure on him by playing him out of position.

  • Any idea when the squad fir the boks game will be announced? I hope whiteley and kriel get starting position. Jantjies should bench for Goosen. Unless we have a coach who will test Einstein’ s “idiot” philosophy of trying the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Oh wait….

It used to feel like a major disaster when we lost previously but for the past 2-3 years it feels like we should be expecting to lose just as much as we expect to win. Gone is that feeling if dominance. And it’s not just sharks supporters. Bulls fans and I’m sure wp fans have also lost that lovin’ feeling….

  • @JD (Comment 14) : I had this conversation a few weeks back. I used to get really vocal during the game, whether we were winning or losing. But I find my self now watching the game quietly and in a tight affair I rarely get that knot in my stomach I used to get. I was wondering if it was just me maturing or love waning. Think it’s a bit of both but with so much rugby being played these days and the opposition strength and quality seeming to be less I suppose my enthusiasm has dipped.

On saying that I’m loving the CC at the moment and the way the Sharks are trying to play. Hopefully we can continue in this vain but as this article suggests be more clinical. Still got a long way to go and with few re-reinforcements coming in from Japan / Europe for SR2017 I’m sure we’ll be a better squad next year.

But keep in mind that Elton and Mapoe didn’t have AC as coach in the SR final, where they also didn’t perform well, the game was just different than a regular season game, tighter, more tactical etc. Just think they can’t adapt to those type of games at all.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 22) : Jaantjies season at W.P under Alistar and Fleck speaks for itself,Mitchel and Carlos had turned him into a class act and then he went down south and reduced to Earl Rose level, before he was rescued by Swys and Ackerman and returned to the class act he is.
Remember how many players Habanna comes to mind, were completely reduced to a shadow of their former selves when they joined Coetzee at the Stormers.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 26) : What I’m referring to is what Hound said about AC and Stick who get’s quality players and they don’t perform under them, with Elton and Mapoe(you asked if they can be added to that list) also not performing under their own coach in a different game than what their used to(SR final), which makes the coach they play under not as important as the level/style they play and how they adapt to the game.

  • @The hound (Comment 30) : @The hound (Comment 28) : Yeah I was just comparing the SR Final with international games, they are more similar than a regular season match is to an international. Neither of them performed in either of the international or SR final games(where they had Ackerman as coach, not AC) . Not defending AC or saying Elton and Mapoe is bad, they should just adapt better to the international level/finals rugby. Makes a lot of sense as to why Mapoe isn’t performing with De Allende on his inside, as for Elton though, he has the same guy on his inside who had excellent internationals thus far.

@robdylan (Comment 68) : This must be the reason the Sharks scrum is so strong right now

  • @SheldonK (Comment 69) : Just before the selection of the Bok Squad, AC released a list of injured boks who would not be available for selection and were either working with the boks or their union on injiury rehab. List included names like Lambie, Pollard, and as well Coenie Oosthuizen. There was an article here that included the list.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 72) : Ah ok i must have missed that…and his injury- dont remember him getting injured? Just strange that Lambie makes the Sharks injury report but not Coenie- i assume Coenie is doing his rehab at the Sharks not with the Boks.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 73) : I don’t remember Coenie getting injured either, maybe in the quarter final loss? I think we both may have put that entire game out of our minds. I was wondering myself what his injury was when the list was released.
