Vincent Koch moves up from the bench to replace the injured Julian Redelinghuys at tighthead in the Springbok team named to face Argentina in Salta on Saturday.

Allister Coetzee has kept faith in the side that rallied to beat the same foes in Nelspruit at the weekend, opting not to meddle with combinations that still need time to gel.

Sharks man Lourens Adriaanse comes onto the bench as predicted and stands to earn a second test cap. Coetzee’s only non-injury related change is to bring Morne Steyn onto the bench in place of Juan de Jongh.

Hooker Adriaan Strauss again captains the side and will need to put in a big performance after disappointing at Mbombela.

South Africa: 15 Johan Goosen, 14 Ruan combrinck, 13 Lionel Mapoe, 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Faf de Klerk, 8 Warren Whiteley, 7 Oupa Mohoje, 6 Francois Louw, 5 Lood de Jager, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Vincent Koch, 2 Adriaan Strauss (capt), 1 Tendai Mtawarira.
Subs: 16 Bongi Mbonambi, 17 Stephen Kitshoff, 18 Lourens Adriaanse, 19 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 20 Jaco Kriel, 21 Rudy Paige, 22 Morne Steyn, 23 Jesse Kriel

  • Barring Steyn replacing De Jongh the rest is pretty much as expected. Here’s to hoping for an overall improved performance. Can someone give the french ref a hug before the game

  • While not unexpected am really stoked for Lourens. Hope he gets a chance to show off some his lesser known side step and offload skills.

  • If it hasn’t worked 4 times before, why not try for a 5th! Lucky nr. 5! Seriously, I don’t see that backline running defenses to shreds this weekend, neither in the next 5 games. I give them this game against ARG, if they, especially Elton and De Allende don’t come right, drop them please!

  • Also don’t get why PSdT and Kriel are on the bench again. They did much better from the bench than the guys starting to claim a run on spot. Watching these selections are becoming something I would rather give miss.

  • I do back the notion of not making changes after 1 bad game. I also believe in rewarding form. Our bench players, PSDT, J.Kriel even de Jongh are clearly producing more than the starting players yet they aren’t being given the opportunity. Why are our coaches so terrified to make changes? This obsession with letting players settle only puts them into a comfort zone and re-enforces the idea that his poor performance will not influence selection the following week. I’m sick of seeing de Allende under perform every week and then see him rewarded with another cap. I really wasn’t expecting different from AC but it still irks me that he seems to think no change is needed.

    Rant over!

  • @Quintin (Comment 7) : agreed, Kriel deserves a shot, Strauss is making it as a captain only and I’m yet to see how that making any difference. Elton has played in the relms of ok to poor, but without a clear cut better option I would persist with him for 1 game more, however will note he is on very thin ice.

  • So in trying to be positive…lets hope Mahoje builds on his performance from last week and Whiteley can run off his shoulder. On a dry hard field looking to see Jantjies actually running onto the ball hard. Combrinck gets another go to cement his wing spot- think he could be dangerous running off 10 as opposed to waiting on the wing. And Goosen gets another go at grabbing at 15 jersey for himself. On the bench its good to see another Shark in Adriaanse. PSDT and Kriel offer good value off the bench and im actually interested to see how a Faf and Morne combo would work

  • @SheldonK (Comment 10) : Don’t know how that pitch is in Salta but if it’s fast at least that could help us, apparently the weather forecast says it’s going to be dry. I think Combrinck is doing very good for a guy who just started at this level, looks like he’s been around a while, plus you have that feeling that something good is going to happen every time he gets the ball. We should look to rest him a bit after this game though, he put in a lot of hard work and running since the SR semi’s and final.

Have to admit, Mohoje was the surprise package last week, didn’t know why he was picked before then.

  • @Quintin (Comment 12) : From what ive heard Salta will be hot and dry with a hard pitch. I dont think players should be rested at National level…players should play every game possible for their country…rest should happen at lower levels.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 13) : Yeah that makes sense. Wish we had a better system to protect all our national players, not just some of them. Who is on our list of centrally contracted players these days anyway? Wonder if they’ve added anyone to it lately? Hope they put Faf and Combrinck on there right away.

  • @Quintin (Comment 14) : Yeh i think minutes played at National level should determine minutes played at local level subsequently. So if Combrinck plays these next few tests he shouldnt play again till End of Year Tour. Injuries will always play their part though

  • @Quintin (Comment 8) : Also meant extremely tongue in cheek. Strauss as captain fails to convince, Jantjes lost all his confidence in the sr final. Do the NZ and give some young(or inexperienced) guns a run

  • If Steyn is the only change not forced because of injuryit really does say a lot about how much confidence AC has in Jantjies…he probably wished he had a sub for him in the second half on saturday when he started dropping the balls and kicking his captain against the head!

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 19) : It definitely was my favourite part of the match! Not sure strauss actually played better after though… I just think AC has a replacement hooker on the bench that he doesn’t have a lot of faith in, so now straus will almost always play a full 80, no matter how much he disappears in a match

  • A lot is being said about Elton and his “poor form” aside from his kicking I actually think he has been doing ok. I firmly believe that it is Coetzee’s game plan and combinations that is making Elton look bad. We saw the same thing when he had his SR stint with the Stormers.

The persistence with PSdT and Kriel as bench players is mind boggling to say the least. I also believe that the red head should be starting ahead of Tendai. Habana also needs to call it a day, shadow of his former self.

A lot is also being said about DeAllende not passing to Mapoe in the last game, I don’t recall him going on many crash runs and having too many opportunities for him to make the pass. He did surprisingly make a few deft passes.

Goosen at FB, well the jury is still out on that one.
