Exciting under 21 match-up at Newlands

There’s very little doubt that Western Province had the form team at under 21 level in 2015, romping to the title by destroying Free State in the final. In fact, that Province side won 14 of the 16 games they played, with only two blots on an otherwise flawless copy book.

Interestingly, it was the Sharks who inflicted both of those blows, winning the first match at Newlands and then drawing with WP later in the season at Kings Park. While 2015′s Sharks crop were perhaps a little light in terms of experience to do real damage in the tournament last year, they certainly showed that they had what it takes to compete with the eventual champion side.

Fast forward to 2016 and the fledgling confidence that fans had in the Sharks under 21 side was quite severely damaged by a shock opening-round loss to EP. Mike Horak’s team has recovered well enough, with two wins over the last fortnight, and are certainly not off the pace in the competition, with no side boasting more than two wins to date. Province are also not world beaters this season, having won just once in their three starts but ahead of the Sharks on the log due to bonus points and a superior points difference. All things considered, it would be less of a surprise for the Sharks to win Saturday’s match at Newlands than it was last year, but there’s still plenty of work to be done.

Injuries and disruptions have not been kind to Horak; not only has he lost vital backline cogs from last year’s side in Inny Radebe and Rowan Gouws, he’s also not able to use Curwin Bosch, who could fraknly be a match winner at this level. Add to that the absence through injury of some important timber up front (loose forwards Graham Geldenhuys, Johan du Toit and Ayron Schramm are all out) and you realise that the task facing the team is very difficult.

Mzamo Majola leads a settled tight five this week, with Andrew du Plessis at hooker looking to build on a fine performance last week after a long injury layoff. Ruan Kramer, Rikus Swartz and Hyron Andrews all know each other well by now, but it’s in the back row that new men will need to gel quickly. Kerron van Vuuren, who usually plays hooker, packs down at open side this week, with big Namibian Johannes Retief at 7 and Mike Meyer at number 8.

Another Namibian, World Cup scrumhalf Kevin Stevens starts at 9 and the nippy scrumhalf will look to add some verve on attack to a backline that hasn’t always managed to get going this season. Ruben de Vos has big boots to fill at flyhalf and needs to put in a strong performance, while the centre pairing of Marius Louw and Tristan Blewett looks to be a good one for the future. Big S’busiso Nkosi and Malcom Cele are the wings, with Kelvin Elder keeping the exciting but erratic Morne Joubert out of the starting fullback spot for the time being.

Sharks under 21: 15. Kelvin Elder, 14. S’busiso Nkosi, 13. Tristan Blewett, 12. Marius Louw, 11. Malcolm Cele, 10. Ruben de Vos, 9. Damian Stevens, 8. Michael Meyer, 7. Johannes Retief, 6. Kerron Van Vuuren, 5. Hyron Andrews, 4. Rikus Zwart, 3. Ruan Kramer, 2. Andrew Du Plessis, 1. Mzamo Majola (Captain)
Replacements:16. Erich Kankowski, 17. Ngoni Chidoma, 18. Mthunzi Moloi, 19. Bandisa Ndlovu, 20. Jaywinn Juries, 21. Danrich Visagie, 22. Morne Joubert

The under 19s are also in action, with prop Khutha Mchunu leading a rapidly improving side that is unfortunately well out of the play-off race at this stage.

Sharks under 19: 15. Donovan du Randt, 14. Mfundo Ndhlovu, 13. James Tedder, 12. Taigh Schoor, 11. Ilunga Mukendi, 10. Gareth Simpson, 9. Francois de Villiers, 8. Mthokozisi Ntuli, 7. Cornelius Otto, 6. Andre Coetzee, 5. Andrew Evans, 4. Clifferd Jacobs, 3. Khuthazani Mchunu (Captain), 2. Samuel Swanepoel, 1. Christopher Klopper
Replacements: 16. Bubele Gonqa, 17. Jordan Els, 18. Muammir Salie, 19. Marco Ian Koen, 20. Gustav Kirstein, 21. Migcobo Bovu, 22. Khali Koetzenberg, 23. William Squires

  • Looks like a good u21 backline. But as they say it all starts up front as the forwards will need to work hard to get those backs some good ball. Nice to see Nkosi back from injury. Also interesting that the Buthelezi chap from UZKN doesnt get a look in…he looked like he could prove handy, especially off the bench etc

  • Rob is Buthelezi that played wing for Impi injured? Must say he reminds me a lot of Hougaard and personally I’d love to see how he plays at 9 as I think he’s got the perfect build for a 9.

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : Would be interesting to see the names of those over 21 that arent in the CC reckoning…cant be that many but still…Buthelezi, Khaya Majola, Francois Kleinhans, JC Astle, Wandile Mjekevu come to mind. Im sure there are a few more that played in the CC qualifying as well

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : The Sharks also appear to be their own worst enemies sometimes. I watched the game last week and Johan got injured early, he was limping badly. He then gets mowed down on the same leg in a heavy tackle and boom, AC gone – that is him out and I doubt he will be ready for Super Rugby pre season training. And believe me, this boy is a late bloomer, has not risen as quick as his boet, but keeps getting better game by game. Schramm and Geldenhuys both out with blady toe injuries – if I was Horak, I would be pulling my hair out. Anyway, will be at Newlands tomorrow and look forward to seeing how the new loose trio goes

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : interesting did not know that. Had the idea that all Impi players were young enough to play age group but apparently I was wrong. Would still like to see him at 9 as I think he’s a bit small for a wing but suppose that would be at club level then.

  • @robdylan (Comment 8) : no problem anyway way over or just six months over does not matter much as he still can’t play for under 21′s. Going to have to do it via club rugby if he has any plans of playing provincial rugby.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 27) : 3 Maloi , 2 A Du Plessis , 12 M Louw and 13 T Blewitt. This team has been decimated by injury and not having the likes of Inno, Bosch, Tedder or the twins available. This should have been their swansong season, but they just carrying to many injuries in key positions. Watch out for Du Plessis at hooker, very much in the Dan Coles category – not the biggest guy, but a great player around the park.

It does always seem if something every year disrupts the u21 season…i guess when you dont sign the numbers that WP and Bulls sign then injuries/call ups will have a major impact

There are also a good few players just outside the u21 age group such as Eksteen, Buthelezi, Marwana, Maritz etc. As the advertising says…its a new generation sharks team taking shape

  • @JD (Comment 61) : Just make them work extremely hard when they there, get them to fetch beer, go to the shop to collect ice, then to pizza hut/debonairs to collect the food, then another beer since the 1st one is now finished, then get him on the coach to watch a bit of the game, then to the kitchen to help with dishing up supper, by this time beer number 2 is done, and the 3rd is required, whilst eating you might need ketch up, he knows where it should be, when he is back you need a napkin so that the pizza sauce don’t drip, then beer 4 should be ready and be poured, then the two slices of pizza is done and you in need of more, and so it goes for the whole night, trust me they don’t get time to think of shit or try it, and will most certainly be the 1st and last visit, and when your daughter complains, it is easy you tried to make him feel part of the family :)
