Du Preez masterminds Sharks’ defeat

It was the Robert du Preez on the field, rather than the one in the coaching box, that had the biggest impact on Saturday’s coastal derby at Newlands, with the young Western Province flyhalf delivering a masterful performance to consign his father’s Sharks side to a 34-27 defeat.

The Sharks battled throughout and managed to overcome an early 11-point deficit to turn ahead, mainly thanks to some superb place-kicking from Curwin Bosch. Du Preez and Province came out of the blocks quickly and had two tries on the board before the Sharks had even really started to play. Bosch chipped away at that lead as the half progressed, with a try to Du Preez’s younger brother Jean-Luc helping as well. With five penalties in forty minutes, the 19-year-old appeared to have turned the tide for the visitors, who went into the break holding a slender 20-17 advantage.

In the second period, though, it was all Province and the Sharks simply didn’t have answers on a day when the attacking instinct was there, but the execution simply was not. Three further tries against (and a single one for – thanks to Rhyno Smith) saw the men in hoops take a comfortable victory, with the Sharks perhaps even a little fortunate to finish within seven (and take a losing bonus point) given the final try count.

It was not the Sharks’ day and with Du Preez turning in a tactical masterclass and unlocking the Sharks’ defence with clever kicks throughout, there is plenty for his father and the rest of the Sharks’ coaching team to think about this week. Du Preez, a former Sharks junior, turned the table on his former union and on Saturday at Kings Park, another young flyhalf who has worn Sharks colours before will attempt to do the same in a Free State jersey.

Western Province (34) – Tries: EW Viljoen (2), Johnny Kotze, Werner Kok, Kobus van Dyk; Conversions: Robert du Preez (3); Penalties: Du Preez.
Sharks (27) – Tries: Jean-Luc du Preez, Rhyno Smith; Conversions: Curwin Bosch; Penalties: Bosch (5).

  • If Robert du Preez could kick at poles a little more accurate, the scoreline would have been very different.

Felt that the Sharks were never really in the game, completely outplayed by a better team on the day.

  • Yeah look. Rasta had probably the worst game I ever saw him handled, but even without Rasta, the Sharks never really looked in the game. What irked me the most, was how little the Sharks do to secure the ball at the rucks. Which then leaves the door wide open for WP to interfere with the scrummie. But I also think WP was just way more hungrier for the win, as they knew it was an all or nothing situation.

  • Probably the best game i have seen from Rob DuPreez…he was tactically good, tackled well and attacked the line with ball in hand. The Sharks did offer a lot of good stuff but too many silly penalties cost them any momentum. The team defensive strategy needs to be looked at as nobody is covering the large space behind our rush defense and teams are starting to exploit it.

  • @JD (Comment 4) : I like Bosch and we need to continue with him. Not sure I’d move him from 15. He’s been very composed so far and it’s only towards the end of Saturdays game that he started to lose shape. Which is understandable considering his age and relative inexperience.

Inny was not good and think maybe it’s time to give April a start and let Inny bench for a week.

Defence is my major concern and it’s something that we need to address right now.

  • @JD (Comment 10) : Let him mature a bit more at 15. The pressure at 15 is not as intense as at 10, plus his body will be allowed to also mature better as he won’t have many 100kg+ forwards running at him for 80 minutes.

  • I think we need to remember that this is a young sharks team looking to play more enterprising rugby and keep the ball alive more. Mistakes will happen and they are but there is also a lot of good play. Its the silly penalties we give away that bugs me the most. That and the fact that our defensive pattern has a real weakness

I don’t mind losing a few games if there is progress and even the slightest hint of bigger picture thinking.

Giving guys like Radebe and Bosch extended runs to find themselves is great, those guys won’t have to find their feet in Super Rugby come February.

As long as there is constant improvement, I am positive. Bring on the Cheetahs so we can see the Sharks bounce back and see if they have some grunt..

We cannot play exciting rugby and back young players and be a home-grown team with the Natal spirit and never concede a try and kick every goal and win every set piece and never lose a game. That’s just not how real life works.

Our discipline is where we should improve and with it being a young team that will come naturally over time as the youngsters gain experience. I’m very excited about our future. The trick now is to keep hold of your talent, or at least the core group coming through.

  • I question how a team that had only one decent attribute in the Super rugby season ,the best defence in the tournament, can go to a team with one glaring weakness a dodgy defence.Unlike other teams ours hasn’t been weakened by national duty.So whats the problem.
I don’t believe its because the defensive coach left and the team forgot everything as soon as he was gone.
I think that the problem lies at 10,and the coaching team don’t trust his defence,so they constantly changing the defensive backline with Jean-Luc or Keagan as a defensive 10.
I also thought that Bosch put in a kicking display that put Rob du Preez to shame.
Rob is very like Jaantjies,he is a confidence player and the slightest thing can make him loose it,he had a good game on Saturday but that doesn’t mean he will have one this Saturday

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 2) : If the Sharks could finish off the scoreboard would be very different. If the Sharks didnt have such a dominant scrum (they got penalised for this) the scorboard may have been different. Looking at the game as a whole, other than the few kicks that Rob Doep missed WP took everything that was on offer to them whereas the Sharks left a shed lload of points out there on the field. WP were well mastered in the scrums and lineouts. Despite the result this was one of the more enjoyable games to watch.

Agreed, it was good to watch, a bit frustrating at times, but thoroughly enjoyable.

The Sharks showed character to come back in the first half, after being completely caught off guard with those two tries. It showed determination to fight back and get those 5 penalties and score the try to lead, after being so far dawn after 10 minutes..

At 15 he seems to “drift off” and does not get involved to much except when the ball is kicked to him. Maybe I’m wrong and the lad is just finding his feet before unleashing his full potential but currently I don’t see him as an option at 15 for Super rugby so would like to see guys that are options for next year get a chance to settle and show what they offer at 15.

Thoma DuToit needs to drop weight if he wants to become an international…so much potential just to heavy and slow currently. Can see Chilliboy has dropped kgs. Jean Deysel was disappointing again…it really is time to invest in some youth for that role. Jean Droste looked alright the little cameo he had.

  • The most pleasing aspect of the weekend’s game is the fact that despite us losing, people on this site are not losing their sh*t, calling for the immediate replacement of players A, B and C, coaches, managers, car guards and whatnot.

I think it’s down to three things:
    1) The Sharks are playing an attractive brand of rugby, and the players actually look as if they are enjoying themselves
    2) We have a credible (if relatively inexperienced) coach with deep Sharks roots
    3) Unlike the union, the coach is transparent and consistent in terms of his expectations and approach, and communication thereof

Yes we lost the game and watching us fluff a few opportunities was frustrating but at the end of the day I was pleased with the intent and execution of a lot of our game. It’s been said before so long as we can see improvement losing isn’t so bad. So long as we learn from the loss and do not keep making the same mistakes which keeps costing us games.

Wouldn’t mind seeing Am a bit closer to the ball.

Esterhuizen does let the ball die a bit going into contact, if he could pass or offload in contact every so often, Am could be freed up..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 89) : From what I’ve seen of him he could make it into the Sharks team as a backup to Esterhuizen. Heimar doesn’t really cut it for me and I don’t know much about Marius Louw and Am’s abilities at 12 hence why I’m asking about Deysel as I rate him in that position. Is he still on our books? Was he ever?
