Pat Lambie back on the field

It’s early days yet, but Patrick Lambie’s long-running process of getting back into rugby took a big step forward yesterday, as he was cleared to return to field training with the Sharks squad.

There was a little caveat in the injury report released by Dr Alan Kourie yesterday – Pat’s workload will be “modified” this week, meaning he’s not yet allowed to go at things full ball. More significantly, this does not mean that he’ll necessarily be in selection contention for this week’s game against Free State, but certainly a return to the match day squad is getting nearer all the time. Good news indeed.

Another guy who’s back in the mix is Stephan Lewies. The big lock has been cleared to return to training, but will also not automatically be included in this weekend’s squad unless it’s clear that he has no lingering effects from his hamstring injury. Daniel du Preez has also returned to the training field after a few months out with a groin injury, but is not yet cleared for selection.

The status of a few other longer-term injuries was also clarified in the releaes: Cobus Reinach is on track to return in February after his ACL reconstruction, while Coenie Oosthuizen (thumb and toe injuries) and Tera Mtembu (MCL sprain) will be out for 8 and 6 weeks respectively.

  • That’s great news! I hope that they learn from what we did to the du Plessis brothers and Alberts and allow the guys to heal fully before rushing them straight back into action.

From the sounds of things though they’re being cautious and are treating them like people and not assets.

I was very heartened to see the style of rugby we’re trying to play. We may have lost against WP but I hope that they Sharks coaches will keep the faith and allow the guys to get through the growing pains of the new style and keep trying things. Eventually, as the skill levels go up, the 50-50 passes will stick more often than not.

  • Great news indeed on all the guys, even if Pat only returns for SR next year, think the time off would also help him heal all the niggles that he might have carried with the elbow, bicep ext. All in all good news and Lewies returning will be a huge boost

Let’s just hope he doesn’t get sucked into the Rugby Champs home games and we lose him for another 6-8 months..

  • @Pokkel (Comment 3) : There will also be more continuity for the sharks next year. Most of the guys playing now,can take this gameplan and skillset into SR. Very few disruptions, only 2 boks and a few injuries. I can’t think of any Japanese players that will join us again late either. Hopefully the coaches keep playing like this, the players just jeed to find the balance between offloading and holding onto the ball…and if you are EO,know whne to pass the ball backhanded and when a normal pass is good enough ;)

I think they were very cautious with his injury hence the long time off the field so he should be ready. But also think it’s better if he at least gets some game time at CC level to get back in to it. The games that lie ahead for the Boks are some of the most important in our history if you consider where we are headed at. If we don’t win against AUS this weekend it will be especially bad seeing that we head off to NZ afterwards with little chance of an upset there which means 3 losses in a row. Though time ahead, we need Pat to get involved real soon.

  • @The hound (Comment 43) : Face it, with the pace and power professional rugby is played now, any player is at serious risk, one has to listen to the advice of several different doctors, and make the decision whether one should play or not. Neither of us have that inside medical information, so let’s hope that Pat (and his family) have gotten several opinions from several of the best in that field, and can make a reasoned decision as to what is best for Pat and his future.

  • @durbsguy (Comment 48) : @JD (Comment 49) : I firmly believe they have done everything possible to ensure he is physically ready to go back on the pitch. I have no doubt that many experts in the field have been consulted and unanimously agree he is fit to resume training and eventually playing. However, Hound makes an excellent point when he posted “every time we watch him play from now on in the back of our minds there will be the fear of another knock, and that one could be fatal.” This being the case, surely the concern can only be increased in Pat’s own mind, and that seed of doubt about any injury can so easily expose a player even more so, as they may allow that doubt affect the way they play the game. Hesitation in contact/collision sports like Rugby and Gridiron exposes players to injury as they are often in an awkward position when the collision occurs. Pound for pound, Pat has always been a very physical player, he has never shied away from contact, and is not afraid to enter the fray to clear much larger forwards at the breakdown. He may be on the smaller side, but he plays well above his weight. I hope that he is able to continue playing with the same confidence in his own body after all he has been through, because I am afraid lacking in any way this confidence, he will be at greater risk of further injury, perhaps serious. So while physically he may be 100%, it is his mental approach to the game that still has to be tested.

I for one feel that he is probably one of our most valuable men in the forward pack.Don’t get me wrong, he needs to improve on quite a lot of things, but his work rate is immense, and I just our line is so much safer when the opposition has a line out near our line, as he has been phenomenal in disrupting mauls legally.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 70) : I see Lewies as Victor,Botha as Bakkies and EO as Danie Rossouw,
When all of those three were firing was the last time Bok rugby was great

  • @The hound (Comment 73) : Yeh good assessment. Seems like the Boks may look to utilise PSDT like Danie Rossouw…play him from the bench at either lock or flank
