Currie Cup injury curse

While the Sharks (and I say this furiously crossing fingers, holding thumbs and touching my wooden desk) seem to be doing all right on the injury front this Currie Cup and are now in the position of welcoming players such as Stephan Lewies, Dan du Preez and maybe even Pat Lambie back after lay-offs, other teams have been less fortunate. This week, in particular, has been particularly bloody when it comes to players being ruled out.

Western Province’s Bok(ish) hooker Scarra Ntubeni snapped his Achilles against the Sharks and faces up to 9 months out of the game – a bitter blow – while loose forward Sikhumbuzo Notshe, prop Oli Kebble and centre Huw Jones are all also out of action for varying lengths of time. Province have recalled hooker Mike Willemse, who was on loan to EP, given Ntubeni’s injury.

Captains are under the cosh – Boland have lost their skipper, impressive centre Ryan Nell, for the rest of the season following a lower leg break, while Bulls captain Arno Botha dislocated his shoulder against the Lions and is facing at least a week off, but probably more. Young fullback Duncan Matthews has also been ruled out for the Pretoria side – for 4 weeks.

The Lions suffered a big blow, with try-scoring winger Courtnall Skosaan out for the season with a groin injury. Lock Martin Muller is also in doubt – at least for this weekend – due to a shoulder injury sustained in Pretoria last weekend. The Kings – who do not play this weekend – have nothing more serious than bumps and bruises at this stage, although bear in mind their captain, Schalk Ferreira, has already been ruled out for the rest of the year.

Joining the Sharks in relative injury freedom are the Cheetahs, making this week’s clash in Durban all the more tantalising.

  • Shame, I saw on an article this morning that Scarra’s injury is potentially career-ending.

I hope not for his sake.

Glad the Sharks are relatively injury free. Just reminded me of those Super Rugby seasons not so long ago when we had 22 or so players out injured, if memory serves me correctly.

  • @StevieS (Comment 4) : From what i understand its a similar injury to the one Juan Smith had and struggled to come back from. All depends how his Achillies reacts to the surgery and hopefully it knits together well. Not a pleasant injury

  • @StevieS (Comment 4) : always sad if a player’s career is ended by injury that’s why it’s so important for youngsters to ensure they have a qualification out side of rugby.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 5) : Hopefully the advances made in that field, which allowed Juan to come back, will work for Scarra as well.

@JD (Comment 6) : I agree 100%. Sadly most of our players neglect this side of things. I watched the one NSW match and I think it was Kane Douglas who has his Advanced Finance degree. There was an article in SA Rugby Mag a few years ago which said something like 90% of Kiwi and Aussie players study, whereas only about 5% of SA players do. And a career can end in the blink of an eye.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Rob, how can Mike Willemse be recalled by WP from the Kings. Isn’t there a rule in place limiting you to one team per season?

  • @robdylan (Comment 10) : I think we’ll need him. Leaves the Kings in a tough spot though as they’ve already lost Schalk Ferreira. Might be a good idea to use Majola.

  • @StevieS (Comment 7) : yes part if the problem is that unions sign youngsters that shine in Varsity cup before they finished studying. These youngsters then move and stop their studies as the money (and chance to live your dream) is just to good not to take. Let’s be honest if it was offered to us we also would probably have jumped at the chance so it’s hard to blame them. Problem is how to keep them studying whilst living the dream.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 11) : @robdylan (Comment 10) : think unions that made players available for the Kings might have forced for the exclusion of the “one team per Currie cup” rule to ensure that they could get those players back should they need them.

  • I think sharks should take or poach what they can from Kings. There should be no love lost since the union ( not the people or supporters) choose to spiral downwards. Watermeyer whitehead Hall ( yes please) Giant all will have a better future benching for sharks than playing for Kings under current regime.

  • Does anyone know which contracted/semi contracted players are just hovering around as they no longer u21 and are not in the CC side. Players i can think of include Khaya Majola, Francois Kleinhans, Alrin Eksteen, Neil Maritz, Legend Marwana (u21?), Thobekani Buthelezi, Sandile Kubeka (u21?), Gerhard Engelbrecht, Stephan Coetzee…anyone else??

  • @robdylan (Comment 22) : If all those guys are under contracts do you perhaps feel that the Sharks have too many contracted players especially considering that they dont qualify for age group rugby. I would rather contract guys that qualify for u21s

  • @SheldonK (Comment 23) : The Sharks do have too many and I’m pretty sure they’re aware of it. They are trying to trim the wage bill. I see Jaco van Tonder has just gone it Italy,..

  • @robdylan (Comment 24) : I have heard rumours that they are aware of the current situation…so will see what develops. personally i feel we should contract age group players and then the elite guys that will comprise the Super rugby side. Then CC is a mix match of the two
