Well shit, it turns out the first match of the round is tonight (yes, that’s right, Thursday), so I’d better get this done.

Game 1: GRIQUAS vs BOLAND CAVALIERS

The Kwaste are back with a bang – they have found their mojo and they’re not easily going to drop points at home. I reckon they’re a dark horse for the semis – but certainly aren’t going to lose this one either way. Griquas to win by 7.

Griquas – 5 AJ Coertzen (c), 14 Ederies Arendse, 13 Johnathan Francke, 12 Clinton Swart, 11 Alshaun Bock, 10 Elgar Watts, 9 Poerie van Rooyen, 8 Jason Fraser, 7 Sias Koen, 6 Wendal Wehr, 5 Jono Janse van Rensburg, 4 Wandile Putuma, 3 Chase Morison, 2 AJ le Roux, 1 Devon Martinus.
Subs: 16 Marius Fourie, 17 Liam Hendricks, 18 Mzwanele Zito, 19 Thabo Mabuza, 20 Renier Botha, 21 André Swarts, 22 Eric Zana.

Boland Cavaliers – 15 Theuns Kotze, 14 Sergio Torrens, 13 Robbie Louw, 12 Christopher Bosch, 11 Danwel Demas, 10 Adriaan Carelse, 9 Marnus Hugo, 8 Jacques Engelbrecht, 7 Shaun McDonald, 6 Shaun Adendorff, 5 Joubert Horn, 4 Johannes Kitshoff, 3 Enoch Mnyaka, 2 Clemen Lewis (c), 1 SP Wessels.
Subs: 16 Francois Esterhuysen, 17 Basil Short, 18 Wayne Wilschut, 19 Zandré Jordaan, 20 Gerhard Jordaan, 21 Craig Pheiffer, 22 Logan Basson.

Game 2: GOLDEN LIONS vs WESTERN PROVINCE

It’s a humdinger all right – but would you believe neither of these teams is currently even in the top 4? Let’s see how well Province’s renaissance progresses. The Lions are out of sorts, but will want to atone for a bad loss at Lotus, so I suspect Province might just find the going a little tough. Lions by 5.

Golden Lions – 15 Andries Coetzee, 14 Selom Gavor, 13 Jacques Nel, 12 Rohan Janse van Rensburg, 11 Anthony Volmink, 10 Jaco van der Walt, 9 Ross Cronjé (c), 8 Fabian Booysen, 7 Ruan Ackermann, 6 Kwagga Smith, 5 Lourens Erasmus, 4 JP du Preez, 3 Ruan Dreyer, 2 Robbie Coetzee, 1 Dylan Smith.
Subs: 16 Akker van der Merwe, 17 Jacques van Rooyen, 18 Andries Ferreira, 19 Cyle Brink, 20 Ruaan Lerm/Stef de Wit, 21 Ashlon Davids, 22 Howard Mnisi.

Western Province – 15 Cheslin Kolbe, 14 Werner Kok, 13 EW Viljoen, 12 Johnny Kotze, 11 Leolin Zas, 10 Robert du Preez, 9 Jano Vermaak, 8 Kobus van Dyk, 7 Jurie van Vuuren, 6 Rynhardt Elstadt, 5 Chris van Zyl (c), 4 Jan de Klerk, 3 Wilco Louw, 2 Michael Willemse, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg.
Subs: 16 Neil Rautenbach, 17 Alistair Vermaak, 18 JP Smith, 19 Jacques Vermeulen, 20 Eital Bredenkamp, 21 Dewaldt Duvenage, 22 Scott van Breda.

Game 3: SHARKS vs FREE STATE CHEETAHS

Tough one to call, but I fancy that the combination of a bit of wet weather and home ground advantage could swing this one the way of the Sharks. They’ll be desperate after losing to Province last week, so expect the Sharks to squeak this one by around 3 points.

Sharks – 15 Curwin Bosch, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Lukhanyo Am, 12 André Esterhuizen, 11 S’bura Sithole, 10 Inny Radebe, 9 Stefan Ungerer, 8 Philip van der Walt, 7 Jean-Luc du Preez, 6 Keegan Daniel (c), 5 Stephan Lewies, 4 Etienne Oosthuizen, 3 Thomas du Toit, 2 Franco Marais, 1 Juan Schoeman.
Subs: 16 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 17 John-Hubert Meyer, 18 Ruan Botha/Jean Droste, 19 Jean Deysel/Francois Kleinhans, 20 Michael Claassens/Hanco Venter, 21 Heimar Williams, 22 Rhyno Smith.

Free State Cheetahs – 15 Clayton Blommetjies, 14 Rayno Benjamin, 13 Nico Lee, 12 William Small-Smith, 11 Raymond Rhule, 10 Fred Zeilinga, 9 Tian Meyer (c), 8 Niell Jordaan, 7 Uzair Cassiem, 6 Paul Schoeman, 5 Reniel Hugo, 4 Carl Wegner, 3 Tom Botha, 2 Torsten van Jaarsveld, 1 Ox Nche.
Subs: 16 Jacques du Toit, 17 Charles Marais, 18 Justin Basson, 19 Henco Venter, 20 Shaun Venter, 21 Niel Marais, 22 Michael van der Spuy.

Game 4: PUMAS vs BLUE BULLS

Will someone let me know when the REAL Pumas get here, because these pretenders in pink sure aren’t them. Bulls to win by 12.

Pumas – 15 Devon Williams, 14 Bernado Botha, 13 Hennie Skorbinski, 12 Marlou van Niekerk, 11 JP Lewis, 10 Francois Brummer, 9 Emile Temperman, 8 Renaldo Bothma, 7 Lambert Groenewald, 6 Brian Shabangu, 5 Jannie Stander, 4 Wiehan Hay, 3 Marné Coetzee, 2 Frankie Herne, 1 De-Jay Terblanche.
Subs: 16 Simon Westraadt, 17 Louis Albertse, 18 Hugo Kloppers, 19 Carel Greeff, 20 Kevin Luiters, 21 Leighton van Wyk, 22 Ruwellyn Isbell.

Blue Bulls – 15 Ulrich Beyers, 14 Travis Ismaiel, 13 Dries Swanepoel, 12 Burger Odendaal, 11 Jamba Ulengo, 10 Tian Schoeman, 9 Piet van Zyl, 8 Hanro Liebenberg (c), 7 Nic de Jager, 6 Ruan Steenkamp, 5 Marvin Orie, 4 RG Snyman, 3 Jacobie Adriaanse, 2 Bandise Maku, 1 Lizo Gqoboka.
Subs: 16 Jaco Visagie, 17 Martin Dreyer, 18 Irné Herbst, 19 Roelof Smit, 20 Andre Warner, 21 Joshua Stander, 22 Divan Rossouw.

  • And throw on a prediction for the bok game too. I say Aus by 5-7 points. As for the rest pretty much on par maybe acres will differ though.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 6) : Unless the guys come out to show their critics wrong and pitch with a better attitude I can’t see Aus only winning by such a small margin. They will put 10 past us at least. Yes they are also bad at the moment(form wise) but if you look at their team on paper it looks much better than ours. On top of that it doesn’t look like our players are playing with any pride in the jersey. Lets see.

  • @JD (Comment 10) : Well said, as both teams aren’t performing it makes sense. I won’t mind if we lose though as I don’t expect us to win on current form and playing in Aus although I do at least want to see an improvement in our play. Can’t wait for the Sharks game though!

  • Griquas were good in patches last night against a very poor Boland side. Think the wheels have seriously come off for Boland. Losing the skipper Ryan Nel was a big blow. (Good player that Nel)

  • @SheldonK (Comment 12) : Griquas left a lot of points on the field last night, they played real enterprising rugby though, there wing Alshaun Bok is one guy to keep an eye on for the future, think he might even play SR next year for the Cheetahs

  • @Henkb (Comment 13) : Alshaun Bok has been good for a while now but has struggled with injury to play consistently but seems he is fit now. Algar Watts and their 12 Clinton Swart also good players- think Swart would look a lot better in a quality team as well. Not sure what happened with Boland as they showed some promise- perhaps its squad depth thats an issue

  • @SheldonK (Comment 17) : If he’s in his late 20′s he might still be a good stop gap for someone who has trouble in that position. Don’t rate him as the future star FH or anything, just think he’s a solid player, nothing more.

    @SheldonK (Comment 19) :@Henkb (Comment 20) : Won’t take much for them to do that I reckon.

  • @Quintin (Comment 21) : no I don’t think so, as bot teams, have some difficult opposition coming up for them in the up coming weeks

Boland 9 points (Blue Bulls, WP)
Kings 1 point (Sharks, Lions, Pumas)

Based on this I doubt that the kings will over take Boland as they will have to score 2 wins here with a losing bonus in the other game

Pumas 5 points (Blue Bulls, WP, Cheetahs, Kings) they might sneak past Boland, with a win against the kings, and losing BP in one of the other

  • after having watched the sharks game from the railway stand live last week. watched the full game again tonight. it’s interesting how you pick up certain aspects depending on if you watch the game on tv or at the stadium

Radebe had a good game, and so did sithole

Rasta didn’t cost us the game

it was a very exciting contest

rdp deserved man of the match

wp won’t win the cc this year though, it was just a bad match up for us on the night.

Johnny kotze and that Viljion kid are good players

we had three opportunities with two minutes left to get the try and possible conversion to draw the game.

Smith came on and looked composed
