Lewies returns for Sharks

Robert du Preez had made a single change to his Sharks starting team after last week’s first loss of the campaign. Stephan Lewies has been passed fit to start alongside Etienne Oosthuizen in the second row as the team prepares to face the Cheetahs at Kings Park.

Lewies has been missing in action since the second round victory over Griquas. He comes in to replace Ruan Botha in a starting line up that is otherwise unchanged, with youngster Inny Radebe and Curwin Boasch again backed in key backline positions.

The bench has seen a fair bit of movement, with some late niggles requiring some bracketing. Botha’s name is alongside that of Jean Droste, with the former, presumably, a fitness concern. Jean Deysel may give way to Francois Kleinhans, as may Michael Claassens to Hanco Venter, depending on the outcome of late fitness tests.

Wandile Mjekaevu comes in for Heimar Williams in a confirmed change to the bench.

Sharks: 15 Curwin Bosch, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Lukhanyo Am, 12 André Esterhuizen, 11 S’bura Sithole, 10 Inny-Christian Radebe, 9 Stefan Ungerer, 8 Philip van der Walt, 7 Jean-Luc du Preez, 6 Keegan Daniel (c), 5 Stephan Lewies, 4 Etienne Oosthuizen, 3 Thomas du Toit, 2 Franco Marais, 1 Juan Schoeman.
Subs: 16 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 17 John-Hubert Meyer, 18 Ruan Botha/Jean Droste, 19 Jean Deysel/Francois Kleinhans, 20 Michael Claassens/Hanco Venter, 21 Wandile Mjekevu, 22 Rhyno Smith.

  • Lekker to have Lewies back again! Now just to see Lambie’s name on the sheet again.. ;-) Great that Rob was able to pick the bulk of the team again without any injury enforced changes.

  • What news on April? I’m surprised that he isn’t even making the bench. His utility value would be a huge asset.

  • @JD (Comment 4) : Cheetahs will be keen to klap the Sharks too
Looking at the log, and remaining games, the Cheetahs are well placed. Bulls almost sure to bank 14 points out of their last three matches, which would put them on 29 points. So Cheetahs need to ensure that they get a full house against Pumas and Griquas, and at least 2 points out of the other matches vs. the Sharks and Lions.

If we can topple the Sharks, we can likely top the log, if not, we can end second, which will still ensure a home semi.

  • I really want to see Franna get a run again, all respect to Deysel. Patience on attack and alignment as a team on defense will, along with good set pieces, give the team what they need to beat the Cheetahs. Too frenetic on attack last week and letting in 5 tries was our undoing. Patience and cool heads need to prevail. Nice to see Lewies back.

  • Pretty good side. I do want to see more from Schoeman as i think he has ability to carry the ball more. Also hoping to see Esterhuizen used as a dummy runner sometimes with the ball going behind him. Sharks didnt do a lot wrong last week so lets hope they can put in a good performance at home…Cheetahs will be tough

  • Glad that they are persisting with the youngsters; I’ve almost finished watching last weekend’s game, and there was definitely more that was right than wrong.

Good to see Lewies back; would’ve liked Etienne Oosthuizen to have taken a break, and to see what a Lewies/Botha combo can offer, but no complaints with the selection as is.

Personally, I’d prefer Kleynhans over Deysel. Jean is by all accounts one of the nicest okes around, and he is a Sharks legend, but frankly, based on his play over the last year or so, at this point I’d prefer he emulate that other legend, the Loch Ness Monster – be spoken about in tones of awe, but not actually be seen, as such.

All in all a good team; looking forward to the game!

Sad to see a player with such a promising future go from playing in the SA A side a couple of months ago.. to not even making the Currie cup side today. Whatever the reasons may be, let’s hope they sort it out soon so we can see Garth back to his best in the near future.

He is basically not rated as the top flyhalf currently and due to the 22man squads Rhyno Smith is seen as a better utility player. Inny Radebe had to wait his turn and is now taking it so now April has to wait.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 26) : Agreed. This is similar to when Ruan Pienaar was the preferred Bok flyhalf, with Morné Steyn the designated substitute. One poor kicking performance from Pienaar during the Lions tour handed Steyn a start, and he simply never relinquished the position for years to come.

  • I am not totally convinced by Radebe,I think April is a much better player must be.He was called up for the Bok squad, before Radebe had even play a Currie Cup game.I have watched Radebe play live and it is patently obvious that the team don’t trust his defence. He defends every set piece on the right wing.I think there are personality clashes at work here, and I reckon April could be Cape Town bound, which is a pity because I think he has more talent than Radebe andSmith

  • @The hound (Comment 31) : I’m going to differ from you on that one. To me, April exudes a bit of a Ruan Pienaar/ Gaffie Du Toit air about; I just get the impression that if things don’t go his way, that his confidence is likely easily dented, and his game will fall apart.

Watching last weekend’s game last night, I thought Inny did not have the greatest game ever. But what I liked is that whenever he was caught in possession, he remained composed, and didn’t just pass or offload to no one in particular.

So my impression is simply that Inny offers more, mentally, that is.

  • @robdylan (Comment 23) : we can calm down everyone.

I was lucky enough to speak to a few player and coaches as well as April this past weekend. it’s no big deal, his not in the match 22 right now, he’d obviously love to play as anyone would. but he missed a meeting, Curwin actually got his spot, then Radebe can off the bench and performed really well ever since Curwin performed well at fullback. Thus odwa lost his starting spot at fullback.

the vibe in the team is like you got to always be ready even if your on the bench or not in the 22, cause your opportunity could come at anytime and when it does and you perform well, they won’t replace you next week when the more experienced guy comes back from suspension or injury cause you didn’t do anything to lose your spot. He will now have to wait.

five games in Radebe got the starting fh spot from April

bosch got the starting FB spot from odwa

schoeman at the starting LH spot from a departing Chadwick

not to say that if anyone gets a chance and isn’t able to put in a good performance they will be discarded, but the guys that have stepped up have played well. and if they don’t then we need to help them prepare for next time. sometimes kids get pushed too soon, it’s unique to each player though.

having been to Wellington and Newlands this past few weeks. I’ve been lucky enough to talk to Radebe, Curwin, April and ryno Smith about rugby in general, and what’s it like playing for the sharks, must say we have recruited high character guys. April doesn’t seem down at all, like everyone else he just seems focused on two things, winning and improving as a player.

I like our depth at FH and fullback

as well as to the 5 man strong security team at Boland park stadium lol who had no choose but to let Everyone onto the whole field immediately after the game to mingle with the players (I still feel bad for the Boland team, not one person wanted a pic with them). to their credit all the players seemed chilled and had time for a chat and a few dozen pics, I guess they were stoked at having won a third game in a row that Friday. young kids couldn’t get enough of Radebe, bosch and April (home town boy). while another home town boy ryno smith told me of his disappointment of not having made the trip down with the team from Durban because of a slight niggle. obviously he was keen to play at Boland park in front of friends and family.

as I posted before, spoke to Rosko Spekman about Giant, he says giant still belongs to the pumas but got injured on our watch so his finishing up rehab with us. Thus if fit giant would have been playing for the pumas in cc right now. this is according to rosko though. Best to get Rob to confirm.

  • @revolverocelot (Comment 64) : Mcduling is already gone playing in NZ. Must say I’m not sure if Sharks must sign Giant. Like you mentioned Sharks already have 5 young quality locks available and at 30 Giant is starting to age. At most I’d sign him on only a Super rugby contract.

  • @JD (Comment 63) : @revolverocelot (Comment 64) : Lets not forget Speckman was at the Sharks for ages scoring tries a plenty for Rovers…he only looked to the 7s because the Sharks didnt seem interested. In terms of Giant- great guy personally but id rather pick more mobile locks in the forms of the youngsters we have…even if they are shorter

  • @revolverocelot (Comment 60) : yeah, that’s about right. One thing that is a little funny is the comment about Giant being injured “on our watch”, since he picked up the injury in a Pumas jersey, That sad, I do think it’s right for him to do his rehab with us to make sure it gets done right!

  • @SheldonK (Comment 67) : I know Speckman was at the Sharks before moving to 7′s and Pumas. Personally I just find it a bit strange that no other “big” union signed him. As for Giant I think you’re spot on great person but youngsters has taken game to a new level.

  • @The hound (Comment 61) : Must I really explain what “when Brendan was in charge” means? As in head coach. You know… That one CC season?

Why are you so fixated on one thing he put his hand up and admitted? I admire him for that. How many people would do that? Would you prefer to have people who don’t and zero accountability?
I noted he did it at a time when pressure was really getting to management and would not be surprised if it was done to absorb some of the vile abuse spewed by so called fans who are obsessed with nothing but negativity.

  • @JD (Comment 69) : I think the limited availability of the contracted 7s guys has put off a lot of Unions. If there was a standard deal in place i think a lot more unions would snap up the guys. But it is a tricky one

  • @benji (Comment 70) : They are yes but 2 lock injuries and that picture changes quickly. And wouldnt be the first time that happened.

  • @robdylan (Comment 74) : @JD (Comment 75) : Yeah… somehow I don’t think so. I knew at least 1 would reply along those lines so kinda had a preplanned response. So I probably should’ve let it slide like most stuff, but it’s been a long week. Trolled or not, I got my view on Brendan across which I’ve refrained from many times in the past.
