In some late-breaking team news, the Sharks have revealed that captain Keegan Daniel will miss tomorrow’s Currie Cup clash against the Free State Cheetahs due to an abdominal strain.

Francois Kleinhans earns a 20th career cap – and first of the season – as he takes over in the number 6 jersey, with Philip van der Walt assuming the captaincy. Stephan Lewies’s hamstring injury has unfortunately flared up again, ruling him out. Ruan Botha thus starts again.

A third injury casualty is Jean Deysel, who will sit this one out due to a hip flexor complaint. Khaya Majola is thus on the bench to cover the back row.

Sharks: 15 Curwin Bosch, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Lukhanyo Am, 12 André Esterhuizen, 11 S’bura Sithole, 10 Inny-Christian Radebe, 9 Stefan Ungerer, 8 Philip van der Walt (capt), 7 Jean-Luc du Preez, 6 Francois Kleinhans, 5 Ruan Botha, 4 Etienne Oosthuizen, 3 Thomas du Toit, 2 Franco Marais, 1 Juan Schoeman.
Subs: 16 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 17 John-Hubert Meyer, 18 Jean Droste, 19 Khaya Majola, 20 Michael Claassens, 21 Wandile Mjekevu, 22 Rhyno Smith.

  • Geez talk about last minute changes. Guys saw that it may rain tomorrow and opted out of the game? Is Astle injured? I probably would have preferred him on the bench to Majola

@Vonno13 (Comment 18) : for sure, Whitley is a flashey player and brings his own set of skills which is also great, but if we put Phillip there we replace Duane with a similar player, but I think he will be a huge assets to the boks or to any team for that mater, and he has just grown so much as a player in the last 12 – 18 months, that I’m baffled that he did not get even a sniff on a bok call up

  • @JD (Comment 27) : I think his non call up has to do with Vermuelen moving from 7 to 8 and playing well. You could pick many worse Bok loose trios than Van Der Walt at 8, Vermuelen at 7 with Coetzee at 6.

  • really happy to see frans and Majola in the team, everyone seems to be writing those two off

cause keeps is captain and he plays blindside now

cause when Dan is back everyone wants to see a combo of Dan, ginger and jldp most of the time in sr with keeps on the bench

or the fact that their not u21 players

or cause they both have had extended time off due to injury

I still rate them both and hope they play to their potential. if not for us then in as or make big money overseas.

we forget, manila had a great start to cc last year but then got injured.

Rob is correct, we discard to many 22-24 yr olds that go on to become huge. then again they may not have reached those heights had they stayed cause of.lack of game time. It’s a difficult balance.

  • A reader of tea leaves on another website, commenting on Keegan’s exclusion for this match, suggests that in addition to the abdominal strain another reason for Keegan’s resting is the impression (or is it fact?) that Keegan and Rasta clash. If even partly true it kind of sucks because for what seems to be personal reasons a certain TMO from Bulls country, Glen Jackson (who has never done the Sharks any favours), and now Rasta seem unable to be unbiased in contexts where certain Sharks players or management are involved…or maybe I’m reading too much into it. It feels like we often get the short end of the stick. However, having said all that, Philip’s ascension to captain fills me with confidence as it’s what I would have done in the absence of Keegan and it makes sense. And when I think of Franna, the word-association part of the brain comes up with ‘mongrel’.
