Rugby Champs: Australia vs South Africa

The big test is upon us, are the Wallabies better than the Springboks?

The Wallabies are on a 6 match losing streak while the Boks are 3 from 5 in Coetzee’s reign and hoping for a turn in form from an altered backline. Will the Boks target the set pieces and dominate? Will the Australian backline function and take advantage of the changes in Boks defence structure?

All questions are soon to be answered…

Substitutes (from): 16 Tatafu Polota-Nau, 17 James Slipper, 18 Allan Alaalatoa, 19 Rory Arnold, 20 Sean McMahon, 21 Nick Phipps, 22 Tevita Kuridrani, 23 Drew Mitchell

Unless all our franchises agree on a unified style, and plot the way in which to achieve it, our rugby will continue down this path into oblivion.

  • @schrodingers cat (Comment 72) : Impact is where I would play Alberts. If Whiteley is able he should be the nr 8. I would not want to lose his skills and mobility. The psdt experiment on flank may be too risky. If I must have a lock on flank it would be Mostert much better runner.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 73) : i would rather have 60 min of Alberts’s “bone collecting” than just 20,think its important to get him right in the faces of the AB’s forwards early in the game. As for whitley Im afraid hes in the wrong set up ,you cant pick whitley but expect him to play like vermeulen .Whitley has all the skills and mobility but he lacks physicality especially under Coetzee’s game plan . As for Mohoje i really dont rate him as high as some do for me he shouldn’t be any where near a bok jersey but anayway.

  • Lets be honest with ourselves…we knew this result was coming. If the Aussies werent so piss poor themselves the score would have been a lot different. If we hadnt got that lucky intercept the scoreline would look very different. What has been clear in the 6 matches so far is that the Boks dont look well drilled, they dont seem fired up and none of them are executing the basics well. None of them seem to be on form and those that did show some form during Super rugby have been found out big time at International level. Perhaps the only player with some credibility is Faf De Klerk but even he throws a lot of shocker passes. Jantjies, Whiteley, Kriel, Mapoe go very quiet on the international stage where things are tight. Hard to see what the solution is…perhaps SA rugby is just producing a poor group of players currently. Barring the All Blacks having one hell of a pub lunch before the game on Saturday there is no way i see us winning.

  • So is Alberts being brought in asa lock or as a loose forward. He is supposed to be replacing deJaagger, but we have adequate cover there in Mostert and du Toit
IIf he is being brought in as a loose forward then there is a serious lack of confidence in Louw ,Mahoje and Whitely,Kriel should have been given a chance to start there first.
I suspect that he has been brought in to supply the huge missing ingredient dog fuck. The only player in that team who has any is du Toit,Ethebeth has turned into a caricature, flexing his muscles and glaring and very little else.He looked a serious doos when little Quade Cooper ripped his jersey off him.
If Coetzee wanted a serious injection of dog fuck he should have brought in Bismarck and Frans Steyn.

@Zibbie (Comment 67) : People are bitching because he’s playing bad but I get your point. I also don’t think Goosen is the answer at the moment but we aren’t getting the best out of Elton on this level anyway, he hasn’t shown us anything to suggest he just needs more time to get back on the form he was in SR so we might as well experiment to see if something else works for us. I know there’s a lot of other factors in play, but sorry to say to you, he just doesn’t look the part on international level. We need someone who can take control of the game, he hasn’t showed us that he’s capable of doing that at that level where the game is a lot tighter than SR.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 93) : The Lions game plan is based on having a proper forward pack . You will notice that with Dreyer back the Lions preformed MUCH better .

The counter argument will be that a proper player (like Lambie) would be able to perform with a struggling pack .

Personally i dont think the problem is at 10 . you can pick Pollard , Lambie or Goosen at 10 and we will still get klapped …

  • @Zibbie (Comment 94) : Look any 10 will look better if the pack is dominating. Jantjies is making a lot of mistake and poor decisions etc on his own though and cant blame the pack for that. If the pack is struggling then he needs either play deeper to give him time or get his 12 to play closer for a the short option and then play the 2nd phase off that. So yes a dominant pack will help but cant use that an an excuse entirely. He honestly just looks shellshocked. I dont know if playing through those injuries is now taking its toll.

our pack is a shadow of the past and has no mongrel – pushing and shoving off the ball means jack. midfield looked like they had no clue what the other were doing. how did the Aussies bully us like that????

replacing 10 will not win the game but EJ looks like a dear in headlights, pretty much like April did after his time with Toetie. It looks like the relationship between EJ and AC just does not work

For me Goosen has also not been up to standard . the general reaction to that is that he is not performing at 15 but we need to try him at 10 , or at 13 . same thing with Jesse Kriel . Not performing at 13 , needs to be moved to 15 . People are not calling for these players to be discarded . they are calling for them to be accommodated .

So you can see why it is hard for me to watch this and say yes great .

@Zibbie (Comment 99) : The environment seems toxic and personified by the Captain as he does not look even close to the player that pushed Bissie in the past. Maybe a win in the next two game swill turn it around a bit but something just feels off. With HM at least you could see harmony between the pensioners but there is nothing at the moment in the Bok play that suggest any sort of team effort and play.

As much as I hate it, De Allende and De Jongh should play as at least they have played together recently or De Allende and Kriel (with a loosie sweeping behind them to cover leaks, pref Kriel over Flo) When last did we turn ball over in the loose?

eish, just feels that there is no positives at the moment based on 2016 results and direction. hoping for a miracle or divine intervention

  • @Zibbie (Comment 104) : A lot of Kriel’s work on attack was him cleaning the ruck that De Jongh created. Seems they wanted to De Jongh to play like De Allende and crash everything up- cannot recall him passing the ball. Kriel’s defense at 13 was the best ive seen of him there- and he wasnt helped by De Jongh always pushing in too early so he was always left with a 2on1 and he mostly managed it well. Goosen is by no means the polished article, i just feel he is getting a better each time. The combos are just not working…front row, loose forwards, 9-13, back 3. There is just no interplay from this Bok side.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 101) : think maybe it’s all about the hype. There was so much expected of the new “Lions” Bok backline (4 of the original 7) and in reality so little was delivered that people automatically started to blame the Lions players.
Personally I don’t think any of the Bok players performed and blaming one or two will do no good, that said Elton and DDA was particularly poor thus far and with 10 and 12 struggling the rest of the backline was never going to perform.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 107) : for sure. Bok forwards is struggling so 8-9-10-12 will struggle! As for Whiteley the Lions 6 & 7 (as well as hooker) allowed him to play his loose running game as they did most of the thight hard work. Bok 6 & 7 (and hooker) are not performing as well so now he must get involved in the thight play and that is not where he shines so he will “under perform”!

The bok setup pulls up the Lions players but now they need to play Game plan A . and for the players game plan A is not the strong point . You must remember the Lions went and said . ok we have players X Y Z . we need a game plan to suit the players we have .

    So that is a problem

I can only recall 1 game for the Bulls at some stage in Super rugby thats it. But all things equal i do like him at 15…just with Gelant coming back from injury i wonder who will play 15 for Bulls. If we bring Steyn back id like to see him at 12 to be honest. Mapoe has been Lions 13 but with Van Rensburg and Mnisi playing there plus Vorster coming back will Mapoe maybe move to wing? Id move him there for the Boks. Id also like to see Combrinck play 15 for the Lions with an eye to that position for Boks

And if he’s injured we have to change the whole game plan if we don’t have a like for like replacement. I can’t see that working.

@SheldonK (Comment 113) : I can’t understand why AC hasn’t even bothered to see what Van Rensburg can bring to the table. I think he’s exactly what we need at 12 at the moment. Combrinck at 15 is not a bad idea at all, it’s a pity he’s injured.

If he can back it up next year with another great season there’s no more excuses to leave him out of the team, especially in the awkward situation we are in now. And with AC breaking his own policy of only selecting local players, he might as well bring back Bissy and Steyn too if he’s looking for experienced players.

Would be good if De Allende can get some form as well as I think he’s awesome when he’s on form. Then we would pretty much be settled at 12 with those two. Still think we need better kicking options at the Boks though, tactically and kicking for the posts. We’ve left a couple of points on the field by bad goal kicking and tactically we are not on target with most of our kicks going into opposition hands and on top of that both Habana and Goosen contested really bad for the high ball against Aus. Something the AB’s will have definitely spotted.

Not talking about the long touch finder or the up and under…talking about the chip kick and grubber and knowing when to use each. The current problem with the Boks kicking game is that they arent doing it well. Gone are the educated boots of Morne Steyn, Fourie DuPreez, Percy Montgomery etc.

A chip, grubber or cross kick is sometimes the only way to breach a defense, and with our attack stagnant as it is, we could use that.
