Alberts gets Bok call

Willem Alberts has been called up to the Springbok squad, replacing the injured Lood de Jager.

De Jager has been ruled out of action for at least 2 weeks with a bruised knee. Alberts had to answer the call to the team, who have enough lock cover but with injuries in the loose trio, it was decided to call up the versatile flanker, who can also cover 8th man and lock.

Alberts, currently in France plying his trade for Stade Francais, will join up with the team in New Zealand today, and could come into the team to face the All Blacks this weekend.

Both Faf de Klerk and Johan Goosen are also on the injured list, but both have time until Thursday to prove their fitness for the match. There is sufficient cover within the team should either have to sit out the match. Meaning that we could very well see a new fullback (Jesse Kriel) or a new scrumhalf (Rudi Paige) start against the All Blacks.

We will have to wait and see whether these injuries clear up before the end of the week.

  • @Dragnipur (Comment 1) : flip, I am expecting a drubbing of note. we probably will compete the first half on passion but thereafter, eina

our 10,12 and 13 defensive channels were so poor and Alberts wont add much there although I do expect a few big hits.

smacks of desperation and no clue….

  • @Sharkfinn (Comment 3) : Boks have to kick as we arent fit enough to maintain the ball through phases against the All Blacks, we will get turned over and they will score easily. Best option is to play Morne Steyn at 10 and hope he kicks well.

The current backline reminds me of Strauli days when we had Koen, Bobo and Muller playing against the ABs….. It literally looked as if Jantjies, De Jongh and Kriel played together for the first time ever and their defense is really non existend. If they play again as a combo there will hav to be a 400% improvement or the ABs will have a field day with their running lines

This team needs some real fire in the belly and its not coming from Iron Filings Eben and I really doubt that Willem will bring it.

And yet he stubbornly dies not make the necessary changes. Jaco Kriel in for louw. Janse van Rensburg and Francois Venter both need to make bench and even start. Malcolm Marx ahead of Strauss. Beast must give up his starting berth to Koch or Kits hoff.

but that midfield selection and non performance has pushed me over the edge… AC is proving he is just be an assistant level for Test rugby at best but he surely has the worst setup of any Bok coach ever and I cant see anything coming from inside will turn the ship. Hindsight is easy but he should have been coach in place of Divvy as his preferred style of play and required squad have bolted.

Anyway, lots of pain coming this weekend and abig loss on the cards, similar to how the Sharks got klapped in SR playoffs

Only problem is fater time has moved on and those “super players” are not that super anymore. • @Bump (Comment 44) : Right now what the Boks need is to go back to basics. We all want the Boks to play like the All Blacks, but right now they have no identity. Start with taking them back. If we need to bring back the ”dinousours” then so be it. Changing a gameplan and players midsets takes time. Even the ”great” gameplan that the Lions are playing now did not happen over night. The spent years perfecting it. Remember it started way back with John Mitchell.

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 47) : Good point- its the basics of the game letting the Boks down…and doesnt matter what game plan you play you still have to do the basics. Also as you say the Lions game plan took a while to develop, and under very little pressure at that. When they first changed mindset they also really struggled and a win over the Pumas was seen as a good achievement. The Boks will never beat the All Blacks trying to play the same way as them. Only way to beat them is to force them to play the game in a way they dont want to.

  • My slightly unconventional team to play the ABs: 1. Kitshoff 2. Mbonambi 3. Adriaanse 4. Etzebeth 5. PSDT 6. Kriel 7. Louw 8. Whiteley 9. Hougaard 10. Steyn 11. Habana 12. De Jongh 13. Kriel 14. Mapoe 15. Goosen.
Mbonambi picked as he is used to throwing to Etzbeth/PSDT and he is a decen scrummager.
Kriel/Louw/Whiteley are a similar makeup to the Lions loosies so could gel better and give us some speed.
    Hougaard/Steyn the old Bulls combo.
Centres best of a bad lot.
Habana and Mapoe can chase kicks and tackle.
Goosen has been getting better and better at 15.

  • Going back to this article I know calling on Alberts is not exactly what we want to see (coaches depending on aging stars), but I feel there maybe some merit here. Now I haven’t seen Alberts play since he left SA but assuming he is fully fit, not carrying any niggles etc he is still a huge asset to any team. HE may be a bit slow but his selection is one to get a specific job done and that is to crash into the All Black line and get over the advantage line. So should he be fully fit and only then I endorse his inclusion as none of our other loosies are capable of that task. This year the entire Bok squad has lacked a big unit that can do this, we don’t play a fast enough brand of rugby to play such a light trio as we have done in 2016 thus far.

My preferred options with in the squad would be: 4. Etzebeth, 5. PSDT, 6. Kriel, 7. Alberts, 8. Whiteley to start this game. If we don’t start Alberts then my suggestion is Etzebeth, Mostert at lock and PSDT at 7.

  • @JD (Comment 67) : The biggest problem for the Boks currently as Mallett pointed out is the direction provided by the spine of the team…2,8/9/10. Those players need to direct the play and get those around them playing in the same direction, speed etc. Currently we just arent seeing enough forceful direction from the 2,8,9,10 and the Boks are just all over the place and all the players are playing well below their capabilities.
