Sharks injury molehill turning into a mountain

Things are not looking up for the Sharks after two nightmare weeks on the field. Today’s injury report reads like a Stephen King novel for fans of the team.

First, the really bad news. Odwa Ndungane is out for the season with a torn pectoral muscle. He’ll go for an op this week and we wish him well for his recovery. As one of the vice captains in the squad, losing Odwa is a massive blow.

It gets worse. Philip van der Walt has a concussion, so will definitely sit out this week’s match against the Kings. Keegan Daniel’s abdominal strain will keep him out for another week as well, while Jean Deysel – the only backrow leader left standing – will himself need to undergo a late fitness test in order to play this weekend. Deysel must surely be a strong candidate for captaincy if passed fit, given the lack of other candidates.

Stephan Lewies is another who will return to training this week, but need to pass a fitness test. Dan du Preez is “on track”, but alas that does not seem to mean he’s cleared to play.

Among the backs. S’bura Sithole is out with a groin strain, but Pat Lambie returns to full training. That does not, apparently, mean that Lambie will play this weekend, but his return is a step closer.

Holy hell.

Anyway, speedy recovery gents. Luckily we play the EP, and then a week off. Also, I have a sneaky feeling we will be seeing Pat on the bench for Saturday (hoping/praying)

  • Eish some serious patchwork is needed. Wonder if we will see any front row change, maybe only Chilliboy. Locks will remain the same i feel. Loose forwards…probably Majola, DuPreez, Kleinhans. Think Claasens will start this week and perhaps captain. Not sure Inny will start. Centres will remain. As will Bosch at 15. Mjekevu will go onto the one wing, probably Maritz the other.

Underdog tag always suited us better IMO, so hopefully we can see some guys that is willing to make the step up and compete the hell out of them selves, might be just what they need to get some sort of a SR spot, as I think their is a couple open now

Scheoman, Marais, du Toit, Oosthuizen, Lewies, Kleinhans, du Preez, Deysel, Ungerer, Lambie (capt), Mjekevu, Esterhuizen, Am, Maritz, Bosch.

    More likely:

  • I will differ from most i guess as to the team, And of course much depends on the injured awaiting fitness tests.

    1) Thomas
    2) Chili (Capt)
    3) Meyer
    4) Lewies/Oosthuizen
    5) Lewies/Ruan
    6) Kleinhans
    7) Deysel/Oosthuisen
    8) JL Du Preez
    9) Ungerer
    10) Curwin
    11 Mjekevu
    12) Esterhuizen
    13) Am
    14) maritz
    15) Smith

    16) Franco
    17) Schoeman
    18) Astle/Lewies
    19) Majola
    20) Claasens
    21) April
    22) Williams

If Deysel is not ready i would rather play Ruan and Lewies as lock combo and move Oosthuizen to 7 with Astle on the bench, my feeling is that scrum will be much stronger and chili in because he is a good captain.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 36) : I’m very worried that we’re missing the semis altogether.

Reason being, all of our victories bar one have been against minnows. The guys we are up against for 3rd/4th spot still have those minnows to play.

We need Griquas to kill a few giants for us, but how many can they realistically kill before they themselves become a threat to us.

Province has Kwaste, Boland and Pumas, so will pick up quite a few

Bulls have Kwaste and Boland so will drop or prevent Kwaste

Lions have Cheetahs, Kings and Sharks so will drop or bring Cheethas back down.

So Sharks have it in their own hands but will have to get points from the Lions

  • @Kabouter (Comment 50) : My take is the Cheetahs have a handy inside lane. If we can’t beat the Lions at home, at least get a bonus point or two. Then a bonus point win in Nelspruit against the Pumas, should be a relative certainty given the Puma form, and then a last game at home vs. the tough Griquas. So we can probably garner a minmum of 7 log points. That should be enough to top the log.
Cheetahs can end max 39 points(more likely 33)
Griquas max 34, but unlikely. Bulls at Loftus, and Cheetahs in Bloem will be tough)
Lions can end max 32 points.
Bulls can end on max 30 points (a likely scenario unless the Griquas derail them)
Sharks max 30 points (tough one vs. Lions)
    WP on max 28

  • I think that Shramm and either Meyer or Retief should be promoted to the senior team this week. The balance of the loose forwards is not right with both Franna and Majola starting. JL Dup and Deysel are not good at 8. Let’s give these young guys a go against the Kings and see what happens. Maybe we can discover another Marcel.

  • @robdylan: Haven’t seen him play actually. Just thought that if he was in the U21 8th man maybe he was good enough. The problem that I noticed on Saturday was that JLD was not comfortable at 8 and is more effective on the flanks. Although Deysel has played there occasionally he is also not a natural 8. That’s why I suggested Shramm and the other available U21 loosies. Will it solve the scrum problem? I don’t know. But sometimes techniques more than make up size. But like I said I’ve only seen Shramm play and do not know about the ability of the others.

  • If Deysel is ok for me it’s simple, play a loose trio of 6 Kleinhans, 7 Deysel, 8 JL du Preez, if injured then play Oosthuizen at 7 and bring Astle on too the bench, of course it also depends on Lewies being fit.
I do not see the point of bringing in another young light weight at this moment.

  • @robdylan (Comment 67) : yes not sure if promoting Schramm now is the right call as I think it could actually harm him more. Let him get fit and in form again before promoting him but that does not solve the problem for Saturday.

  • @JD (Comment 71) : reality is, Franna is probably good enough to play 8 against the Kings. Hopefully a week’s rest and we have our first-choice trio back for the Lions

  • @robdylan (Comment 72) : yes Franna at 8 and Majola at 6 should be good enough for Kings. Just hope some injured players are back before the Lions (and hopefully playoff) games!

  • Schramm can certainly be used as an impact player, but the problem is his fitness. After being out so long, it takes a few games to get there, so should one of the loosies go down early, there could be a problem. But as a 25 minute impact player, it would be a good call.

  • We should be able to scrape together enough reserves for kings. I just hope we try to protect the remaining playmakers maybe it’s a good time to rest bosch and let April earn redemption. Also give Astle a go (is he with us again?) and ensure esterhuizen is also given a rest?

  • @JD (Comment 83) : Look ive got nothing personal against the guys, they actually pretty quality chaps in person. I just feel they arent producing the goods in a Sharks jersey. They both have the talent to be good players but i just think they are trying to use their beef not their brain on the field.

  • @JD (Comment 90) : Very hopeful mate! Even though we’ve lost our last two games, I still have a good feeling about the youngsters coming through. They will only learn and get better after these losses. If we can make it to the final somehow, that learning curve will be even steeper though, but that can only be good for them. I’m still positive about the Sharks!

  • @Rugbymad (Comment 86) : Probably the two most promising u21 players there, but as said before, both have had their injury problems this year and I feel they still need time to develop. Would love to see both of them get a chance, but I know their times will come later – possibly next year.

  • I see that Rasta is an assistant referee for a weekend Currie cup game (not the Sharks one)…perhaps a subtle hint that his appraisal for the last Sharks game wasn’t glorious?
