Pat returns at last

Chiliboy Ralepelle will captain the Sharks for the first time in a Currie Cup game, when the side take on Eastern Province at Kings Park on Saturday. All eyes will be on the bench this week, though, with Springbok Pat Lambie set to finally make his return to the game in the second half.

Coach Robert du Preez has faced something of a balancing act this week; not wanting to overreact to last week’s loss, he has nevertheless had to shore up his starting line up with some experienced players. Ralepelle and Mike Claassens come in for Franco Marais and Stefan Ungerer respectively, in the interests of upping the average age of an otherwise young team. The loss of wings Odwa Ndungane and S’bura Sithole to injury robs the team of further experience; Wandile Mjekevu and Rhyno Smith start in their places.

Changes have come up front as well, after a disastrous scrum performance against the Cheetahs. Thomas du Toit start at loose head, with Johnny Meyer earning a maiden start in the number 3 jersey. Juan Schoeman joins Marais on the bench, where they will be alongside Jean Droste and fit-again Jean Deysel. The starting loose trio has also been rejigged, with Franna Kleinhans shifting to 8 to allow Khaya Majola to start at 6.

Neil Maritz is the new man among the backline replacements and will sit alongside Lambie and Ungerer.

Sharks: 15 Curwin Bosch, 14 Rhyno Smith, 13 Lukhanyo Am, 12 André Esterhuizen, 11 Wandile Mjekvu, 10 Inny Radebe, 9 Michael Claassens, 8 Francois Kleinhans, 7 Jean-Luc du Preez, 6 Khaya Majola, 5 Ruan Botha, 4 Etienne Oosthuizen, 3 John-Hubert Meyer , 2 Chiliboy Ralepelle (capt), 1 Thomas du Toit.
Subs: 16 Franco Marais, 17 Juan Schoeman, 18 Jean Droste, 19 Jean Deysel , 20 Stefan Ungerer, 21 Patrick Lambie, 22 Neil Maritz.

  • Great news regarding Pat, very chuffed for him, and that we can have him back, also not a bad looking team with all the injuries of late:)

  • So pleased about Lambie. Think Inny must feel lucky for keeping his spot and expect a bid improvement from him.

On another note where is Lewis? He was due to start last week, got pulled out last minute and now nowhere in site?

  • Nobody likes the Kings, or not many people anyway… imagine the hatred if they are to break Pat again.

Welcome back Pat, hope to see you in the Green and Gold at the end of the year again!

  • Yes!! The Lambo is back!!!!  Absolutely fantastic news, not only for the Sharks, but for the Boks as well as we desperately need a 10 ASAP.
Front row also looks good. Can FK play 8?? Doesn’t strike me as an 8..

  • Thanx Rob but I see on the team list you wrote Jean Deysel’s name in invisible ink. Or did you just decide to surprise the Kings when he shows up wih the number 19 jersey?!

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 6) : ja you people just skipping through the whole article to just read the team list! If you bother you would have seen it’s Jean Deysel geez I don’t know why Rob bothers with the whole explanation before. For guys like you he could just slap the list from 1-22 and be done with it! ;-)

  • Good timing for Pat to come back. Shouldn’t be too tough against kings and after that there is a bye. So coach should have a pretty good asessment whether he is ready for a big match. Just hope he gets 20 minutes at least.

  • Its great to have Pat back, but I have to focus on the captain for this week. It’s a very interesting call. I would have thought there would be more discussion around this. My gut likes the idea and I think he should be starting every game based on form and he has plenty of captaining experience. I’m just wondering if it is too soon? Has he done enough at practice to gain the respect of the other players, lets leave the fans out for a second, it’s crucial that he is able to lead on the field. Considering his history it’s even more difficult for him to achieve that.

  • @Southern_Shark (Comment 23) : People here will know im the biggest critic of Chilliboy having signed for the Sharks. But fact is he probably the most robust hooker we have. Marais is not bad but i just think Chilliboy is currently better. Reason i think Chilliboy doesnt start and play as much as i have a feeling his fitness isnt up to it. 2yrs out does take its toll. He should get up to speed soon. So having said all that and in current state of affairs he is a good captains choice in my opinion

  • It’ll take a lot to get past the Cheetahs at the moment and I can only see a guy like Pat helping us have an edge over the rest of the teams in winning them. I really hope that this injury doesn’t affect his usual play. He’ll be rusty that’s for sure, just hope he’s the same player. Luckily we have a break after this game, if he can get a solid 20/30mins on the pitch and he looks fine, we can have him in the starting line up against the Lions.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 29) : think Claassens is starting to give him more game time. Think a lot will depend on how he and Pat plays as both need to be on form if Sharks have hopes of reaching playoffs and final!

  • @coolfusion (Comment 29) : Yeah, I haven’t been very impressed by Ungerer this season but Claasens has also lost some form towards the end of SR. If he has a good game maybe he stays on long enough to play with Pat. I think we’ll struggle against the Lions with that forward pack though. We need Keegan and Ginger back asap.
