No Philip for Lions showdown

The Sharks have been dealt a blow ahead of this week’s must-win Currie Cup game against the Lions at Ellis Park. Coach Robert du Preez’s hopes of naming a full-strength forward pack have been dashed as Philip van der Walt sits out, needing more time to recover from the concussion he sustained against the Cheetahs three weeks back.

The return of Lourens Adriaanse and Lwazi Mvovo from Springbok duty strengthens the squad considerably, as does the inclusion of regular captain Keegan Daniel and Stephan Lewies, both of whom return from injury lay-offs. Adriaanse starts at tight head prop, with Thomas du Toit continuing in the number 1 jersey and John-Hubert Meyer dropping to the bench. Chiliboy Ralepelle continues at hooker, but relinquishes the captaincy to Daniel, who starts in the number 8 jersey worn by Francois Kleinhans last time out. Kleinhans – who was good against the Kings – shifts to the open side, with Jean-Luc du Preez, Etienne Oosthuizen and Ruan Botha all retaining their starting positions.

Lewies has been included on the bench, but will again need to pass a late fitness test on his hamstring, lest he be replaced by Jean Droste. Khaya Majola and Franco Marais are the other forward replacements.

At the back, Mvovo comes in for Wandile Mjekevu at left wing in the only change, with the latter dropping to the bench in place of Neil Maritz. Inny Radebe starts at flyhalf, with Garth April providing cover off the wood.

Sharks – 15 Curwin Bosch, 14 Rhyno Smith, 13 Lukhanyo Am, 12 André Esterhuizen, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Inny Radebe, 9 Michael Claassens, 8 Keegan Daniel (capt), 7 Jean-Luc du Preez, 6 Francois Kleinhans, 5 Ruan Botha, 4 Etienne Oosthuizen, 3 Lourens Adriaanse , 2 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 1 Thomas du Toit.
Subs: 16 Franco Marais, 17 John-Hubert Meyer, 18 Stephan Lewies/Jean Droste, 19 Khaya Majola, 20 Stefan Ungerer, 21 Garth April, 22 Wandile Mjekvu.

  • Strongest possible side Rob could pick and I reckon we have a real good chance. Glad to have Captain Keegs back. Good luck guys! Keep the errors to a minimum and give it everything and more. It is now or never.

  • Yeh pretty close to the strongest side we can pick. I wouldnt hold my breath about Lewies- when he gets a niggle it seems to last a long time. Should be a good game…providing the Sharks dont miss first time tackles.

  • Besides the fact that Bok rugby is in serious shit..SARU can’t even put a decent schedule together for the CC..it’s bad enough the CC is struggle with attendances..they schedule games on a Thursday night..3 games on Friday (2 at the same time)and one game on Saturday..Time to clean house..Lions v Sharks on Friday at 5pm..how the hell do u expect bums on seats..proper stuff up..I’ll be there though!

  • I think this is the acid test for this team, there isn’t much more to come back into the team ,barring Pat, Dan du Preez and Philip van der Walt.
    Lions missing Whitley,Kriel,Faf,Jaantjies,Combrink,Redlinghuis,Mapoe,Mostert,,
We should win this if they can plug the defence at 10,which is exactly where Jansen van Rensburgh is going to run,and contain Ross who relishes the opportunity to rub it in our faces as to what a good player he is and how badly he was treated at the Sharks.

Broadcasters own the competition not Unions, and they will schedule games when they think they will get a maximum audience, which is much wider than the local bums on seats.

  • @robdylan (Comment 23) : I can only talk for myself, but I used to watch the friday game, get up early on a saterday and start watching all the games, except find something else to do while the Aussie derbies was on, then carry on watching until the last game of the weekend. Now, unless the Sharks are playing on a thursday or sunday, which I don’t think they luckily are next year, I won’t be bothered in watching any of those games. Then let’s say your team plays on a thursday, and you want to go watch them at the stadium, you have to rush your ass of through rush hour traffic to join 2 kids and a dog in an empty stand. I really can’t fathom what their motivation behind such a stupid idea was.

  • I read that Craig Joubert is reffing the game, and that was like piss on my battery. With all personal respect for the man, I don’t trust him to boil an egg. In super rugby I think I remember him reffing the lions and he gave them momentum like it was candy from a bad clown…if memory serves I think the other team were the bulls. He’s never done the Sharks any favors that I can remember. If I’m wrong, well I repent in dust and ashes, but my arse is twitching right now.

To say if you can’t perform great in CC means you don’t belong in supers has many obvious flaws. Cheetahs will only know if they have made real and lasting improvement next year with supers. Before then no one can give a definite yes or no. Yes they played the same teams as everyone else but those teams (everyone else) have been highly inconsistent and way off form. Very suspect as a yardstick, don’t you think? Sharks beat Griquas who beat wp but sharks lose to wp shortly thereafter to give one example.

We are missing at best 4 players, are these 4 the answer ,or please enlighten us as to exactly what the obvious flaws are.Because they are not obvious to me.The only thing that is obvious is that we have a better than shit chance of not making the semis.

Get real!!! Currie cup is no longer a strength vs strength competition it’s been down graded by SARU to keep players busy during the Tri-Nations/Rugby Championship. All SARU worries about is the two “cash cows” Super rugby and Rugby Championship the rest is only there because of history and/or to sort of please the supporters!

If we are seriously going to play Super Rugby with this team we should be walking all over this Lions second team.

  • @JD (Comment 73) : Yeah I agree that reasoning doesn’t make any sense. CC is watered down so much it can’t really be a fair measure anymore due to it being played during the RC and unions losing players to the Boks give’s it a skewed result.

  • @The hound (Comment 76) : OK let’s look who was in the Super rugby squad that’s currently injured of left the Sharks this year:
    Reinach – injured
    Dan dP – injured
    Terra – injured
    Odwa – injured
    Sithole – injured
    Coenie Oosthuizen- Bokke
    Beast – Bokke
    Pat – Bokke
    Dale Chadwick – left
    JPP – left
    Joe Pietersen – left
    Kyle Cooper – left
    Marcell – left
    Paul Jordaan – left
    Willie le Roux – left
Now add players that hardly played because of injury/Bokke
Franna, Jean Deysel, Lewies, Mvovo, etc.
Losing all these players will for sure play a major part in how the team perform.

  • You guys seem to forget that the Lions team that every one is raving about so much now, could not even buy a win a couple of seasons ago, and they had very little player movement between then and now. Those same plonkers are now high quality players. Yes we all want instant success, but maybe we must be a bit patient with this team, at an average age of 22/23 this team has a lot of growing up to do. The potential is there, now the experience just needs to be gotten.

  • @JD (Comment 79) : The point of the argument is that the team we are putting on the field tomorrow is the one we are going to play Super Rugby with,The Lions team is not.All the players you so correctly list as having left have not been replaced thats the problem.

  • @JD (Comment 79) : Last year we addedi Willie le Roux,Michael Claassens,Connie Oosthuizen,Chilli Boy,Philip van der Walt,Potgieter, and brought back JPP,from Japan, all to strengthen the mediocre CC for Super rugby,
Now unless we are about to be given a huge surprise this year we are adding nobody.

  • @The hound (Comment 82) : yes you’re spot on and I must admit I’m more than a bit worried as the Sharks are losing a lot of top quality players that’s not being replaced by other top players! Biggest problem is with who do you replace those players as I can’t see to many top players being available in the SA market! Seemingly the Sharks will try to build for the future with their youngsters rather than spend money on “average” players (almost like the Lions did).

  • @The hound (Comment 82) : @JD (Comment 83) : Didn’t we sign a fair few between the end of CC last year and Jan 2016? I hear you, we need more depth and experience in this squad but surely we have time and someone looking into this.

I mean Gary Gold must be doing something useful behind the scenes

  • @Hulk (Comment 85) : yes they did sign a couple of players but the exodus of top players is worrying for me. There’s no way that you can replace all the quality that has left. Biggest problem for Gold or whom ever must sign new players is who is available and willing to move to Durbs!!!

  • @JD (Comment 86) : We need to be thinking cleverly and buying players like Willam Small Smith,he and Esterhuizen could be so dynamic.I think he is the most underrated centre in South Africa.
Also look at one of the Lions hookers,Ackermann can’t keep Marx,Akker and Robbie Coetzee all happy.
Try to get Tiaan Meyer back, and think about a guy like Marnitz Bosoff,as back up to Pat.
We are at the moment trying to develop 4 young light backline players,Bosch,Am,April ,Radebe all too similar and all at the same time,
We only need 2,and my pick would be Bosch and April,

  • @The hound (Comment 89) : Good idea. I think of the 3 Lions Hookers, Akker would be the easiest to tempt away. Boshoff is already going overseas, Small-Smith might be a good idea. There might also be some overseas based players that would want to come back to SA. Some one like the greek would be great backup to Pat.

  • @The hound (Comment 89) : problem is if any of the players will be available and willing to move to Durbs. As for the youngsters don’t think Am is competition for Bosch, April and Inny as he’s a 13/wing and not 10/15. Of what I’ve seen of Am I must say I do think he could be a good 13.
Bigger problem for me currently is cover at 3, 9, 10, 12 and 15. If the first choice players gets injured there’s not really a replacement that’s nearly as good to replace them!

  • @The hound (Comment 74) : In the two biggest games (Cheetahs, WP) we were missing a heap of players…Beast, Lambie, Mvovo and Adriaanse to the Boks (of whom we arguably missed Adriaanse the most!)…Lewies, Dan and J-L (for one of the games), Keegan, Philip, Deysel (so we were VERY thin at loosie), Odwa, Sburra (which also means we were very thin at wing). The side playing tomorrow has a lot of those guys back, so let’s see how they go…

I don’t think we’ll win the comp…but I think we’ll be there and there abouts and finally get some building done in the right direction…
