Bok coach Allister Coetzee has named his team to take on the Wallabies at Loftus this Saturday with three changes coming from the team that took on the All Blacks a fortnight ago.

We see a new half back pairing in Rudy Paige and Morne Steyn starting ahead of the Lions pair of Faf de Klerk and Elton Jantjies. At fullback, Pat Lambie comes in for Johan Goosen. Each of the replaced players fall out of the match day squad completely.

The forward pack is unchanged with the loose trio of Louw, Mohoje and Whiteley continuing.

Julian Redelinghuys comes back to take a spot on the bench, ahead of the released Lourens Adriaanse, while Lood de Jager also returns from injury to replace Franco Mostert. Willie le Roux comes onto the bench as backup for the back three.

Springboks: 15 Pat Lambie, 14 Bryan Habana, 13 Jesse Kriel, 12 Juan de Jongh, 11 Francois Hougaard, 10 Mornè Steyn, 9 Rudy Paige, 8 Warren Whiteley, 7 Oupa Mohoje, 6 Francois Louw, 5 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Vincent Koch, 2 Adriaan Strauss (c), 1 Tendai Mtawarira.

Substitutes: 16 Bongi Mbonambi, 17 Steven Kitshoff, 18 Julian Redelinghuys, 19 Lood de Jager, 20 Willem Alberts, 21 Jaco Kriel, 22 Lionel Mapoe, 23 Willie le Roux

  • I don’t want to be yet another overly-critical voice against the Boks but some questions still need to be asked. What the hell were they thinking dragging Pat, with a fraction of a Currie Cup match under the belt, into a starting position in the Bok squad against Australia?

Even if his conditioning is 100% (which is questionable), it takes time to adjust to the game after such a long injury lay-off. He may go on to have a great game on the day but I still wouldn’t think it a wise decision just because it happened to work out.

    /End rant

  • Mmmmm… Dont get me wrong Im a big Lambie fan…. but if you look at the bench he is the closest thing we have to cover flyhalf and fullback yet we leave our recognized fullback on the bench and the coach seems to be hoping Steyn or Lambie last 80 min… I dont know it just makes me nervous.

  • We have a lightweight loose trio, an inside centre that can’t tackle to safe his life, now a flyhalf playing at fullback that is not really match fit and a scrumhalf that has played almost no rugby in the past 2 months or so. Yeah AC has a plan right… Only reason for Morne and Lambie both to start that I can think of is to make sure of our tactical kicking.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 18) : Our first problem is leadership. Then our lightweight loose trio, I have never been a fan of Louw, but he is not a bad player, Oupa is a good player in his own right and we all know how good Warren is, but as a combo they are just not good enough. Elton is not an international quality flyhalf, but he is able to do a holding job. We also need a 12 that can get us over the advantage line while creating some space for the 13 etc. But ja, flyhalf is not the main problem

Truly inspiring game management and kicking out of hand, not to mention distribution. No no. let me tell you Elton and Faf are to Rugby what Schumacher and Barrichello were to racing. In a league of their own. Its actually unfair to other teams to pick such juggernauts of the modern game.

Thats how Hanson would ease his flyhallf back after a serious injury.

  • I’m thinking about the selections and my excitement level for the game is pretty low…it used to be an occasion watching the Springboks; And why throw Lambie into the 15 berth when Goose was doing just fine? The Sharks could have had more use of one of their best sons…AC makes it hard to really get excited. And I can’t believe that Kings Park is almost sold out for the fixture against the all blacks. Who wants to watch the all blacks prance about like tribal nincompoops and then watch the Springboks come unstuck? My hope is that a flight of hadedas with diarrhea fly over and bomb the kiwis when they’re doing their ritual

  • @vanmartin (Comment 1) :

I don’t really get your rant. Patrick Lambie has proved many times before that he is a brilliant player. If he is fit and healthy and the Boks have a need for his talents, he must start. There is nothing gain by letting him play an insignificant CC game or keeping him on the bench.

If he has health concerns due to injuries he should quit rugby. There is no safe middle way on this.

  • @fyndraai (Comment 75) : he only played 10min rugby since June. Personally I believe that after such a long time of the field you don’t just start with international rugby. You must play at least a couple of games on a lower level to see how the player performs before you play him at that level again.
Surely if you’re a marathon runner and you were injured you don’t start again by doing the Comrades.
You gradually step up the intensity to ensure the player has confidence in his body and abilities before letting him play at the highest levels again.

So you think Renaldo and Messi should play a few minor league games also when they come back from injury?
Serena Williams should play neighborhood tournaments first. Tiger Woods should win on the Sunshine tour before entering the PGA?

Rugby fans are a special breed. They seem to think a player can only prepare for games by playing games and cannot be fit for games unless they have witnessed him to be so themselves.

  • @fyndraai (Comment 77) : Comparing professionals in individual sports like tennis and golf to rugby just doesn’t work in this argument. I believe you live in America now as I do, and you have certainly brought up comparisons with American sports before, so you know full well that baseball players returning from injury always play several games in the minor leagues before being brought back up to the majors, for batters to get their eye back before facing major league pitching and for pitchers to get their arm back in shape before facing major league batters. So this concept of match fitness is not such a foreign concept in other sports.

  • Look the coach is in a panic and not a lot of his selections up to date has made sense anyway, this just confirms beyond doubt that he has no plan whatsoever and he’s out of his depth. How many minutes of rugby has Paige played since he was included in the squad? Same for Morne? And obviously same for Lambie as well as positioning. I don’t get him dropping Faf along with Elton as I feel Faf can deliver more than Paige even if he’s a little erratic or over eager at times. Morne, well, fuck.

@Zibbie (Comment 59) : I can’t forget that kick. We lost the game because of it! Was a penalty to us, didn’t go out and they counter attacked and eventually scored to win the game.

Just take a quick look at protea cricket were seeming this concept of if you’ve good enough you can play even after months out injured is working so well?!?!?!
I’m not saying Pat must go and play for Margaret vs Newcastle but a couple of provincial games before going back to international sport is the way I’d think it should be done.
As for Serena and co think you will find they prefer to play in another tennis tournament before playing in one of the Grand Slams to prepare themselves.

  • @JD (Comment 82) : Such a stupid argument this guy is putting forward,he is comparing coming back from a pulled hammy to coming back from the kinda concussion Pat has just suffered.
Apart from everything else there is a huge confidence issue to confront, how can be test match ready to go straight back into those high ball confrontations without a few warm up games.
To make it worse he puts him straight into the high conflict area of 15 where he hasn’t played for years against the world ‘s best aerial player Folaou.
Cheek’s plan kick the high ballon Lambie and run like shit Israel and get up in his face.If he drops it we have those two great aerial exponents in Houghaard who is 5 foot 3 and Habbanna who is way up field looking for an intercept pass
To compound his stupidity he has two 15 ‘s with international experience one at 13, and one on the bench.
Its like he’s setting Pat up to fail, but for me if there is one guy who can pull it off its Pat,but why risk him in a lost cause.

Not ACs call to to determine if a position is medically safe for a player. You’re either fit for rugby or not, and the highly qualified and experienced personal are the ones determining exactly that.

  • @gregkaos (Comment 88) : The argument is not as much about medical fitness as about mental fitness.
taking the high ball in a conflict situation is about 100 % physical and mental commitment.
How can you be in that condition if you haven’t played for 4 months and in that position for years,to compound it unless you are as insensitive as Mike Tyson’s sparring partner you know exactly what the outcome was the last time you went into that conflict situation.
