Currie Cup 2016: Xerox Golden Lions v Cell C Sharks

It all comes down to this.

The Sharks need two points from this game, at a very minimum, to ensure progression to the semi-final. They could, in theory, lose to the Lions by fewer than 8 points and as long as they score at least 4 tries in the process (while preventing the Lions from doing the same), fourth spot will be theirs. Better still, if they win, they will be assured of a third place finish. Win with a bonus point, and they end second, eclipsing the Blue Bulls on points difference.

Plenty of scenarios and all to play for. Come on Sharks, let’s do this!

Kick off is at 5pm.

Golden Lions – 15 Andries Coetzee, 14 Koch Marx, 13 Jaques Nel, 12 Rohan Janse van Rensburg, 11 Anthony Volmink, 10 Jaco van der Walt, 9 Ross Cronjé, 8 Ruaan Lerm, 7 Ruan Ackermann, 6 Kwagga Smith (c), 5 Bobby de Wee, 4 JP du Preez, 3 Ruan Dreyer, 2 Robbie Coetzee, 1 Dylan Smith.
Subs: 16 Malcolm Marx, 17 Jacques van Rooyen, 18 Fabian Booysen, 19 Cyle Brink, 20 Dillon Smit, 21 Howard Mnisi, 22 Sylvian Mahuza.

Sharks – 15 Curwin Bosch, 14 Rhyno Smith, 13 Lukhanyo Am, 12 André Esterhuizen, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Inny Radebe, 9 Michael Claassens, 8 Keegan Daniel (c), 7 Jean-Luc du Preez, 6 Francois Kleinhans, 5 Ruan Botha, 4 Etienne Oosthuizen, 3 Lourens Adriaanse , 2 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 1 Thomas du Toit.
Subs: 16 Franco Marais, 17 John-Hubert Meyer, 18 Stephan Lewies, 19 Khaya Majola, 20 Stefan Ungerer, 21 Garth April, 22 Wandile Mjekvu.

  • @SeanJeff (Comment 92) : Obstructive running, no daylight in the rucks….The list goes on…….however, you play what the reff allows and the lions did it better. We did not capitalize on opportunities and we never kept them guessing. 2 yellow cards and a string of blood replacements and we came very close to winning at a venue we haven’t in almost a decade. Factor in the disruption with traffic and all was not so gloom. April deserves to start again. He was the only unpredictable player on the field. Take a bow Am and Esterhuizen, theye made their so called next bok centers look average. If just 2 of our near miss attempts had been converted, we were the victors. This team has potential. We will be better in Superrugby than what everyone believes. Give this group another season and we will build the SA version of a crusaders franchise. Go Boland!!!!!!

  • @jdolivier (Comment 97) : What near miss attempts? Don’t forget that Cronjé and RJvR knocked the ball on our line in the process of scoring and one was held up. I don’t remember us getting that close after Claassens’s try, which came from a tighthead.

  • ah come on man !!

if this is pretty much the sr team we better recruit in positions where we lack depth

on top of all of this Im on holiday at Piekernierskloof mountain resort and had to fight to watch the sharks game from the start as my uncle really wanted to watch the proteas game till the end of the innings, some people have no priorities.

I just hope when cobus comes back at 9 he can be more aaron smith and ruan pienaar

  • @Spirit of Rugby (Comment 105) : We were as predictable as a national election in Zimbabwe which didn’t help. Craig was not as biased as his usual anti sharks self, he did have a shocker though. Rugby, apart from being a contract sport, is very much momentum and confidence, both of which we just could not build. This was partly Craig but mostly players just not finishing the last pass, supporting the tackled player, running the right line. These things can click overnight……..I do believe these boys are better than this season.

  • We were simply beaten by a more organized and fitter side. No offense to the Bosch fan club, and yes I know he is young, but at this moment in time, he offers nothing on attack, he gets turned over to easily and never joins an attacking line, Andries Coetzee did just that, you need a fullback who can attack, simple as that. Marx made a huge difference when he came on, Brink was fantastic at 7 and generally, the Lions once again showed the way forward, get fitter, rugby is 80 mins, not 40 or 50, they are clearly learning from the New Zealand sides. The fittest, most skilled sides win. A Esterhuizen is very strong, but he again showed that he can’t pass or get a backline in motion, very direct and one dimensional, ala De Allende, boring! Our best players, both locks and Am, excellent games by all 3

We lost bit this looks much better on the whole. Handling also getting much better. I like what I saw. Yes the Lions were better at high pace but they have an advantage of doing it longer the gap is closing though. I don’t feel bad about this performance from very young boys at all. I like what Rob is doing the excitement is back. Even lions supporters in the pub agreed this is looking like it has potential for great rugby.

Our hookers both getting there very speedily.

Having said that some promising moves in the right direction and some nice youngsters unearthed.

It must be remembered that we have a very inexperienced team and it has showed this season – nice offloading in the tackle but way to many isolated solo runs into contact. Wayward kicking out of hand and lacking the coordinated chase line.

Im writing this season off to experience. Well done boys. Lets build on it from here

  • I am missing something here, everybody seems to be very complimentary to a team that has had the worst season in recent memory.
As a Super rugby side making the CC semis is the least expected level of success.
We have had a miserable year, and as season ticket holders we have witnessed shit.
If it wasn’t for the All Blacks this weekend I would have been very pissed off.
Seriously I find all this talk of a young team finding itself very patronising.
Young teams should find themselves at under 19 and under21 level.
We are in serious dwang and are slipping down to the Kings level.
Recruitment is shocking and we are going to be the laughing stock of Super rugby if we take that backline on tour.
If we can’t beat a Lions side minus 8 Boks we don’t deserve to play Super rugby.
Here’s hoping someone with a little naus is scouting for a few veteran backline players.
Our backline tackling is shocking and Radebe ,Am,Smith are not up to this level, boys against men.

  • Just my 2cents. I thought we controlled the game brilliantly in the first 45 mins. The Kleinhans yellow was the turning point. Stupid individual error by him. As soon as we lost that momentum it went downhill. Lions capitalized on the numerical advantage and we paid dearly for poor individual discipline. In our last 4 games we got 4 yellow cards and 3 were for tip tackles? Please correct me if I am wrong but if you lift a player above the horizontal, you are in kak. And it’s been a law for a while now and we still do it. In my honest opinion, Kleinhans’s yellow cost us a semi final place. We never recovered from it. I did think that Joubert gifted the Lions some calls but he was not to blame. Esterhuyzen was a beast on defense. Ungerer had a shocker when he came on. Lewies was awesome when he came on. Our handling skills will take some time to get it where we need it but we definitely improving on that. Just remember it took the Lions 3 years to get where they are now so let’s back our boys. Good things come to those who are patient

  • I’m in agreement with some of the comments posted on here. Yes I am disappointed with losing but we definitely had a better season and showed a lot of improvement. The future don’t look as bleak as last year. Last night the 2nd half effort was poor. If it is not broken get up and defend until play stops! Thomas lay down after a ruck and lions scored yet he was able to get up and walk off the field. I may be overly harsh but this was a vital game and everyone should be willing to risk limbs to ensure you win. We didn’t and the lions gained confidence and punished us. Apart from the yellow card Kleinhans had a good game. JL and Daniel were a bit quiet. But the team show potential s
Let’s support the effort and bolster the areas that we are lacking in. Even though we are out of the CC it was a joy to watch this sharks team.

April did add an edge when he came on and needs some time at 10. My best part of the game was watching the 2 12s in the same game….one of the touted as the next bok…the other not. I thought Andre Estate had a cracker he was immense on defense and imho an overlooked 12. Yes Rohan is a talent and the future but I like Andre and his development…just my 5c worth.

As a long suffering season ticket holder, you may appreciate this:

The Atlanta Falcons (football), have never won anything, but will move into the fancy new Mercedes Benz Stadium next year.

    http://mercedesbenzstadium.com/photo-gallery/exterior-design-renderings/#lg=1&slide=2

They’ve just started selling PSLs (Personal Seat Licenses). For an average payment of $2500, you may buy the right to buy a season ticket every year of the 30 year stadium lease period.
Not the season ticket itself, just the right to buy it every year….at some as yet undisclosed price.

  • They seem to have a pretty good legal ticket re-sale market in the USA though.

I know a guy who had Falcon season tickets for a long time, but usually only went to few games himself. For the majority of games his tickets were sold off to recover some of his costs. He was essentially paying a premium for the right to have good seats for any game he wanted to attend, or potentially make a profit in any year that the team was hot.

Talking as a non season ticket holder that’s only able to go to games when I’m on holiday in Durbs it’s bad to have to sit waaaaaay up in the stands when there’s a lot of open seats on the bottom levels next to the field. I personally would pay a bit more to use those seats. That said I think in SA the thinking is “we already have the season ticket holders money irrespective if they attend the match or not. Now let’s make money out of all the others that does not have.”

April did well when he came on but I’m still not sure if he’s a consistent player or should he be used from the bench to get the best from him. Struggling against a team missing 8 starters is not a good sign, next years going to be tough.
