Piet Van Zyl has been caled up to the Springbok squad as injury replacement for Rudy Paige. Paige left the field following a head knock and has suffered a concussion.

Van Zyl has two caps to his name and was involved with the South Africa A side against the England Saxons earlier this year.

Bryan Habana and Jesse Kriel will both be monitored during the week and a call on their fitness will be made later, but both positions have sufficient cover at this stage.

Both Damian de Allende and Malcolm Marx have returned to the Bok camp after playing in the Currie Cup this past weekend. Lwazi Mvovo has not returned following an appendix operation.

  • Ricky January is warming up waiting his call next ,shit we are in such desperate scrum half stakes in this country.
then I suppose Morne must have had a hand in his selection.

  • @benji (Comment 1) : ja not sure how I feel about this one. Somehow it makes a bit of sence as there’s only one game left and he’s the only other 9 that I can think of with some Bokke experience?! Also can’t see him in the match 23 unless Faf or Hougie get injured so basically a waste of time for any other 9.

  • @benji (Comment 1) : And his alternate options are? Do you prefer Groom?
Besides as JD points out… very unlikely he’ll play unless there is injury during the week.

Claassens being over 30 and AC will be criticized for picking an old player and Cronje (just like van Zyl) only now playing as Faf (Paige) is not there!? Geez I’m glad I’m not a coach where some of you can see my side play!!!

Reading the statements coming from Ulster you can see why they’ve done everything they could to keep him there.

  • I’m not so sure van Zyl will just be on holiday in Durbs:
    1. All the noises from Coetzee show that he will probably not go with a 6-2 forwards-backs split on the bench again as it is too much of a risk. It is likely that he will bring a scrummie onto the bench.
    2. Given our lack of wings, especially if Habana is not fit, it is likely that Hougaard will stay at wing.
    3. Faf will come in at 9.
    4. All of the above means that it is almost certain that van Zyl will be on the bench on Saturday? Or did I miss another 9 in the squad?

And Ulster also pointed out that a number of backline players that Ruan has mentored have gone on to play for the Irish national side and is currently mentoring their up and coming 9s.

But I agree, it won’t be long then AE will be putting some pressure on the current crop of 12′s. Don’t forget, we have Rohan waiting in line for a Bok jersey as well and if Damian gets his form back he’ll be right up there again so if AE want’s his spot he’s going to need to show why he should be selected above those two.

So maybe AC decides to move him back to 13 this weekend, if he has any sense at all he’ll do that. Kriel won’t play because he’s injured so he will probably call Damian up again or he’ll play de Jong on inside again and partner him with Mapoe.

Meaning FS has made a huge loss by committing to the boks in the first place. Then SARU doesn’t pay you the fees they should be on top of it, SARU still owes FS millions. You cannot expect FS not to have attitude towards SARU if they don’t pay him his money. They have literally costs him millions of rands, due to him committing to come and play for the boks. HM asked him to come back, he did.

  • @schrodingers cat (Comment 50) : I’d have AE on the outside but other than that, it’s a good backline. I still think 15 is Kriel’s best position, it’s where he made a name for himself from the start and I like a solid tackler at the back. Those 2 centers would kill on defense. Still, I would love to see what Rohan can do on international level, he’s an extremely strong runner, doesn’t go down easily and if you can get guys to run of his shoulder he’ll open up a couple of defenses. Combine that with a good kicker and defender on his outside/inside depending on where you play him, then you’ve got yourself some good chemistry on center.

I don’t think he’s a bad defender though, maybe just shy’s away from it? That can be fixed easily with the right coaching so it’s not a major problem. I think if he can back up last seasons form with another good one he deserves a shot in the Bok 12/13 jersey.

Probably not, because they seem to offer a standard take it or leave it set of terms and conditions to their players. The only exceptions to this, to the best of my knowledge, have been McCaw and Carter and that was only after many years of them being team players.

The original mistake was to negotiate with Frans Steyn in a manner that made him imagine he was bigger than the team. It would be an even bigger mistake to do it a 2nd time.

  • @JD (Comment 63) : Hence I’m saying that they should 1st back up the good seasons they had with another to see if they can perform consistently and to get some more experience. FS’s selection would be a no brainer to me if I was the coach, 1st name on the sheet.

@Southern_Shark (Comment 68) : I like Venter as well and he’s been one of the more consistent centers around the last 2 years.
@Southern_Shark (Comment 71) : Agree, won’t believe much of whats written in his so called biography.

Going to be interesting to see who makes the end of year tour as I think that will show us a lot of what AC is planning for the future!!!

  • @fyndraai (Comment 66) : @Southern_Shark (Comment 67) : no matter how you get to it just pay a person what you agreed/promised! And no I don’t think Frans is a saint or something but I do think SARU did not stick to their part of the contract.

  • @JD (Comment 77) : When are they announcing the tour squad? Probs a couple of weeks after this weekends game? Btw I’m surprised theres not a lot of talk of this weekends game against NZ, people quietly hoping or hiding?

  • @Quintin (Comment 78) : think touring squad will only be announced after Currie cup final. As for weekends game against NZ think it’s a feeling of resignation as I’m not expecting a victory but still very very quietly hoping!
