Hot on the heels of yesterday’s news, the Sharks have acted swiftly to allay any concerns regarding Thomas du Toit’s future.

A media release this afternoon confirmed that du Toit has signed a three-year extension to his Shaks contract, on that will keep him in Durban until October 2019.

The release confirmed that du Toit will join Munster in Ireland for three months, returning to Kings Park in January to join the Super Rugby squad for the final month of pre-season.

“We have no doubt that this opportunity will allow Thomas to gain valuable experience and some important game-time under his belt, ahead of the start of the 2017 Super Rugby tournament. The European Professional Club Rugby tournament is a competition where scrummaging is at the forefront, and this will add to his growth and development as a player,” said coach Robert du Preez.

  • Id love to see this Sharks pack given time to develop a bit:
    1. DuToit, 2. Marias 3. Adriaanse 4. Oosthuizen 5. Botha 6. JL DuPreez 7. D DuPreez 8. Van Der Walt.
I picked Marais over Chilliboy as i think he is younger. I left Lewies out as he is very injury prone.

  • @JD (Comment 29) : Size yes not so much speed. For that you would add Kleinhans and Daniel. When Oosthuizen started out he was used as a flank. He sucked out loud. Since then he has grown a lot as a player. I wonder if we can use him as a blindsider again or Botha? Besides all that. I would personally also want to grow Lewies so there will have to be a clever rotation plan and maybe an extra lock so 2 can be rotated at a time. I would even consider having one dupreez on at a time to leave room for Kleinhans and Daniel. Sorry but for the next year or two we must consider the value of experience and keep the ratio of young talent vs experience.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 24) : Good pack! If Tank sheds a few kilo’s and regains his speed he will be very good at LH. Think you guys need an out and out fetcher though.

Again it isn’t the Sharks starting 15 that is the problem, its depth that will derail the campaign, unless the injury bogey stays well away!

Cheetahs are doing well to develop some much needed depth
LH: Marais/Ox with BG Uys as back up
    Hk: Torsten/du Toit (Dweba/Huggett)
TH: Tom Botha/Namibia (Luan de Bruyn)
    4/5: Wegner/Visser/Hugo/Basson
    6: Schoeman/Boom/Burger
    7: Henco Venter/Mohoje/Cassiem
    8: Marais/Pokomela/Willie Britz
    9: Venter/Meyer/JP Smith
    10: Fred/Marais/Sias/Eksteen
    11: Rhule
    12/13: WSS/Venter/Lee/vd Spuy
    14: Sergeal/Mafuma/Benji
    15: Blompot/Gerrie Labuschagne

A work in progress, but lots of positives. Think Uys might be back from the land of Sushi too.

  • @robdylan (Comment 28) : Basically i think van Der Walt is a very classy 8th man. he can play 6 but at 8 he is just outstanding. And then the twins always play well as a combo…they are both big and strong…can carry and compete at the breakdown and tackle well. I truly believe gone are the days of loosies being a specialist carrier or fetcher, players than can do it all at pace are the way forward. Just my opinion. That starting trio also opens up a good few experienced bench options.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 35) : I agree on Thomas- think the injuries have led to his weight gain to be honest. But he needs to return to the weight he was when he first arrived, if not slimmer. At the moment he is clearly to heavy and slow- gone are his explosive carries and tackles and it shows in his scrum work too. My opinion on a ‘fetcher’ is different, i personally dont think a ‘specialist’ is needed.

We have solid options at 9 and 10, and the front row seems ok. Forgot to add Danie Mienie!

Then the Cheetahs defense was what crucially let them down. Was very good in CC, if they can maintain that form, they will have a better season.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 39) : @KingCheetah (Comment 40) : Yeh pretty much my thinking. In my opinion the modern day loose forward needs to have the full skillset and even be a viable lineout option. As for the Cheetahs the options at front row and 9 have improved but im still not convinced at your 10…id even play Tiaan Meyer above Zeilinga and Marais. Cheetahs defense lapses badly as game continues so perhaps fitness and timing of subs needs to be looked at

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 76) : @KingCheetah (Comment 77) : Interesting you should mention Ruan Pienaar. As I recall, he was the 10 in that 2005 U/21 World Championships, Morne Steyn had to play 12 or 15, and the captain was that 9 from WP.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 75) : must say I think Pienaar made a mistake not to move to flyhalf. He really looked good!!! But if the player does not want to play there it’s his choice and ultimately the move will not work.

  • @JD (Comment 79) : With the right mentorship he could have made a good 9 as well. He was also messed around a bit. Lost opportunity for a good player. SA just though Fourie du preez would live forever so we easily let go of kockott, ruan, Sarel and now we are paying the price.
